In saying that holidays abroad should be minimised?

DH is Swedish and still has family abroad which we go and see three times a year during school holidays and half terms. This year, we have only been once in the February half term and have decided not to go back to visit his family even once travel is up and running. I keep reading reports of some countries like Spain and Italy going to open up its tourism sector but socially distance whereas Argentina is closing its borders to tourists until September. Personally I do not want to risk catching something on holiday, it’s the last place I would as I wouldn’t want to strain the healthcare of the country I am visiting temporarily.

I get that some countries do live off tourism, but what would make people want to go on holiday abroad with strict social distancing regulations that are likely to be costly to business and operators? Would love to hear your thoughts, personally DH and I have said that our abroad holidays will be postponed till some normality has arisen but that will be a long time yet, we may ‘holiday’ in the UK instead but very unlikely. It’s going to be hard yet to open up a large tourism sector when schools and workplaces will have to be reformed.

I live abroad so I will be travelling to see family and friends as soon as the borders are reopened. And since it is taking us a while to have a baby I'd like to get a few more holidays in. Avoiding holidays won't help get the economy back up and running.

TinRoofRusty · 03/05/2020 15:57

I was able to buy tickets to fly abroad in July with no problem.

Badoukas · 03/05/2020 15:57

I'm happy to go somewhere in UK if that is possible. A change of scenery and helps our economy. Would rather be somewhere with higher chance of hit weather but there you go, we will just have to write this year off.

LochJessMonster · 03/05/2020 16:00

I’m booking a holiday abroad as soon as possible.

Nameisthegame · 03/05/2020 16:02

Spain isn’t even going to allow inter area travel until June/July it’s going to be while before they let foreign tourists in.

Nameisthegame · 03/05/2020 16:03

If the numbers rise again it could be longer. Next week we can have take away again.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/05/2020 16:06

I agree OP

But there's a fuck ton of climate change deniers around here today

Ladyglitterfairydust · 03/05/2020 16:09

We were supposed to be going to Turkey at the end of July and we’ve cancelled. It’s unlikely that we’d be able to go anyway, but the thought of one of us being ill and us in quarantine (or worse - in hospital) just wasn’t worth the risk this year. 2 weeks in the sun isn’t worth it. There’ll be other holidays. We’re disappointed, but it’s the sensible thing to do and it’s not the end of the world.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 03/05/2020 16:09

We have flights to Spain booked for August but no accommodation booked. I'm happy to stay home but can't afford to lose the money we've paid. It's a difficult one. If borders are closed it's easier to plan and to get a refund or most likely vouchers

SwedishK · 03/05/2020 16:25

I am dying to go home and see my family. Normally goes 2-3 times a year but I have not been home since July last year since our Easter trip got cancelled. I have tickets to go in July but I’m not very hopeful that I will be able to go then either but I’m really hoping so. If it’s all open I will still go and stay for longer than originally planned. I have my own place there though so won’t be mixing with a lot of outsiders.

Nameisthegame · 03/05/2020 16:29

I’m not sure it would happen or tbh you might have a crappy time restaurants are limiting tables etc english.elpais.com/society/2020-05-01/social-life-under-spains-deescalation-plan-when-can-i-expect-to-visit-family-and-friends.html

This is the plan barring any set backs.

BirdieFriendReturns · 03/05/2020 16:32

You do what you want to do and I’ll do what’s right for my family.

Moondust001 · 03/05/2020 16:40

I booked for January (and I always go at that time of year) a few weeks ago and got such a sweet deal! If my holiday can't go then the deposit will be the least of our collective problems. I'm looking to see if I can get another sweet deal for late September. There's been a fair few around on account of all the people who don't want to travel. The restrictions don't bother me in the least. And I am certainly not going to plan my life around what might happen. An asteroid might hit the planet. Lifes too short.

thejollygargler · 03/05/2020 17:08

I was able to buy tickets to fly abroad in July with no problem.

Doesn't mean that your flight won't be cancelled though.
The airlines need cash at the moment so they will continue to sell flights to keep the money coming in.

My daughter could book flights to come and see us in July as planned, but it is looking very doubtful as to whether they would even be let into the country - or possibly would have to quarantine for 2 weeks when they got here and when they get home (neither of us live in the UK).

RRocket · 03/05/2020 17:10

We live for holidays. I'll be going on holiday again as soon as it's deemed "safe" to do so, and as soon as countries open borders to British citizens again.

Which will probably not be any time soon.

vanillandhoney · 03/05/2020 17:12

I very much doubt anyone will be going anywhere this year, sadly.

Jeleste · 03/05/2020 17:15

We wont be going anywhere this year. DH has close family abroad and im glad we were there over xmas/new year. Usually we see them 2-3 times a year. This year we definitely wont be travelling anymore and neither will they.
We do want to holiday here though, to support local tourism. Not right now obviously, but in summer/autumn depending how it all goes.

terrigrey · 03/05/2020 21:36

I travel a few times a year normally with at least one longhaul.
I'm not expecting to travel at all this year, not even within the uk (apart from staying with family).
I'm not even sure I will go to London this year! (normally work there)
No way am I getting in a plane to get ill abroad with no travel insurance or spread a different strain of the virus to the locals.
Time to enjoy the simpler things in life, stay home, tend the garden, hobbies etc.
I am lucky because I have been part of the generation which has travelled a lot and last year I had 3 longhaul holidays, plus a couple of trips to Europe, so my travel cup is fairly full.
If it's the end of an era travel wise, that's probably a good thing for the environment, and hopefully the time will be spent developing low-carbon travel, who knows.
People who think that life is going to return to normal this year or even the next are living on a different planet, maybe one which doesn't have a pandemic?
I find it crazy that people are so desperate to travel, first world problems I guess?

terrigrey · 03/05/2020 21:42

(I'm not talking about people who want to travel to see family....that's completely different - and if they get ill abroad they have people to look after them, most people I'll with C-vid don't go to hospital, but lots need weeks of bed rest).

CrimeAndMumishment · 03/05/2020 21:47

"Holidays are important to our family"

How interesting, most people hate holidays.

comingintomyown · 03/05/2020 21:48

What alternative said , people went away knowing the risks but didn’t want to lose their money then bleating that the government aren’t dropping everything to “rescue” them - unbelievable

Theduchessstill · 03/05/2020 22:11

I am lucky because I have been part of the generation which has travelled a lot and last year I had 3 longhaul holidays, plus a couple of trips to Europe, so my travel cup is fairly full.

And then a few lines down:

I find it crazy that people are so desperate to travel, first world problems I guess?

Slight contradiction there, terri. People who haven't been as fortunate as you might feel differently from you about restricted opportunities in the future. I agree that it's probably delusional to expect to be able to go away any time soon, but I wouldn't judge people for saying they plan to go away as soon as they are able and it is deemed safe. I feel like that myself and hope I'll be able to go abroad with both my kids again when they are still both kids- eldest is 13. Yes, that is a first word 'problem' or concern, but that doesn't make it invalid.

panicstationsready · 03/05/2020 22:16

We have a huge holiday booked for later in the year - and unless the country we are going to still has closed borders we won't be able to cancel without losing all the money - and we are talking a LOT of money, so we will almost certainly go. We are hoping that travel will still be restricted and we can get a refund.

ChasingRainbows19 · 03/05/2020 22:20

Abroad is off the cards this year. I don't want to go on holiday with nothing open or everything socially distanced. That's not the holiday I want to spend money on

That's IF anywhere opens its borders to tourists. Which considering our high rate of deaths I'm not sure some will be that keen.

I'll be happy for a couple of nights away in the uk at any point this year. But will see.

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/05/2020 22:26

What about those who have had Covid and could be immune.

Me just want to get on a plane and go somewhere. We were planning Las Vegas at the end of the year but doubt that will go ahead.
My house was supposed to be sold and I was supposed to be in Florida now.

I want very gradual reopening of things so everyone is as safe as they can be and would love to know if we have had it and if we have immunity.
