What fresh hell is this? National VE day

This has popped up on my local FB page, villagers are all up for it too. Apparently it’s a nationwide incentive??

The thing is, most front gardens are tiny or non existent here. There’s no way you could be 2m away from your next door. Also these villagers who are up for this are the same people who few weeks ago cried about a lone bloke sitting on a crass verge, well away from any pedestrians. How is this any different?

I’m not British (have lived here a long time though) so maybe I’m just not getting the fervent VE day misty eyeness Confused

And don’t get me started on 9pm nationwide singalong Shock WHO comes up with these things???

so it's a bank holiday for those already at home

Yeah, because they knew everyone would be at home anyway when they planned the bank holiday 🙄

wetpants · 03/05/2020 11:39

For those who say just ignore it - well I wish I could! It’s suddenly everywhere, on FB and the whatsapp groups! I’ve muted the groups for now, FB is harder to avoid as I have a business page which I have to check daily.

I’m not sneering at Brits at all, I hope it doesn’t come across like that. I think it’s more the place where we live. In general it’s lovely here but there’s a weird herd mentality going on, always has been. There’s few loud individuals who seem to have endless energy to organise all sorts of village events and joining in bandwagons. And it’s hard to ignore it at times when all your friends and neighbours are wanting to do all the joining in too.

Handsoffisback - it’s very backwards here! Like it’s the 1950s and good Officer’s wives stay at home, make jam and lead the other wives in a chorus of “Lambeth Walk” to boost spirits! 🤮

“Once you get down Lambeth way
Every evening, every day
You'll find yourself
Doin' the Lambeth walk“

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 03/05/2020 11:41

It has become a bit sinister and militant

Really 🙄

Do it or don't. No need to broadcast it.

cologne4711 · 03/05/2020 11:41

I don't really care whether it's for VE day, VJ day or anything else. I don't want to take part in street parties with people I don't know.

I wish people would wait until VJ day when it might be easier to have a gathering and then those who want to go, can, and those who don't, don't have to eg there could perhaps be something in a park. Street parties force it on everyone else, it's not so easy to hide in your house and not everyone has a back garden. And if you need to get in or out of the road you can't. People still have to work.

m0therofdragons · 03/05/2020 11:41

@mondaynoon because people coming over will travel (More people travelling/driving increases risk of car accidents and adds unnecessary pressure on nhs during a pandemic), your neighbours aren’t touching your gate, spreading germs on shoes more than if they were just coming home. Family members, particularly children may struggle with no hugging - too much temptation for a young child. Just a few reasons why there’s a difference.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 03/05/2020 11:42

Hugely insensitive to assume everyone has a front garden. Who wrote this?

Peregrina · 03/05/2020 11:42

The Coronation was the time for the bunting and street parties. Which I am just old enough to remember, although didn't realise what I was remembering. We should be having a Coronation within the next ten to fifteen years.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 03/05/2020 11:42

No I think it would be much better to have a National hate our country day instead.

Why would I hate Wales?

Oh you meant England, my mistake

PheasantPlucker1 · 03/05/2020 11:43

HerLadySheep what does the EU have to do with the end of WW2?

My point @SoupDragon is that it might be an idea to have rescheduled the bank holiday to a time when it would be more appreciated. But yes, what a twat, totally worth a eye roll.

I don't hate England. It's my home. But that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything the government does.

m0therofdragons · 03/05/2020 11:44

so it's a bank holiday for those already at home

Quite a few of us are working so for me it’s actually a lovely 3 day weekend when my dc get an extra day with their key worker parents. We both worked through the last Easter bank holiday (which isn’t normal but necessary at that point). Just because you aren’t benefitting doesn’t mean others shouldn’t.

nevergoingoutagain · 03/05/2020 11:44

I might do it as a history lesson for my kids....always a teacher!!

Wehttam · 03/05/2020 11:45

My idea of Hell. Another virtue signalling bandwagon to ride along on.

I share no celebration sentiment for VE Day, I couldn’t care any less in all honesty. A scone and some hideous Union Jack 🤢 bunting is not recognising the sacrifices those poor men were made to make often against their will. So they can shove this garbage where the sun never shone.

I celebrate their sacrifice by living my life as a law abiding free person, that’s more than enough.

This looks a lovely idea. Unfortunately our neighbours are too far away to see or hear each other so a bit pointless. I definitely would otherwise.

cologne4711 · 03/05/2020 11:45

You wouldn't be on here being miserable judgemental tossers if it wasn't for the fact we did win the war

I suspect that even if Nazi Germany had won the war, things would have changed a lot in 75 years. We'll never know but I think 75 years is rather long to be still peddling "you'd all be speaking German now" trope (anyway, some of us do, voluntarily).

m0therofdragons · 03/05/2020 11:46

@ChipsyChopsy it will be very appreciated by everyone I work with and our dc who have had to come second to the health pandemic! Maybe, just maybe, it’s not all about what’s convenient for you Hmm

Roussette · 03/05/2020 11:47

Who thought of this? Is it a government thing?

If so, it's deplorable. If they think everyone will sit outside their front doors and not mix, they are deluded.
I just feel this is very wrong whilst we are still have hundreds of deaths a day

rosiethehen · 03/05/2020 11:48

Great. Another excuse for making a racket and facebook shaming your neighbours. Our estate isn't too bad, but the one opposite is positively rabid about their doorstep responsibilities and god help anyone who doesn't comply in the approved manner.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 03/05/2020 11:49

nope Taffy you aren't exempt

Thats kinda offensive you know that right? Hmm

Doubly so because I'm from the North Grin
