I've done this in AIBU for the voting feature. IF (and a big IF) schools go back on June 1st, will you be sending yours?

YABU - NO

YANBU - YES

she'll go because then social distancing will be over and she can see her friends
Can't fault her logic

What logic? Who knows if/when social distancing will ever be over? Have I missed an announcement about 1 June?

GreenTulips · 03/05/2020 10:29

Of course I will and anyone who doesn’t is seriously screwing the economy and destroying the country

Chances are kids will return one day a week or 2 days every two weeks to allow for social distancing and cleaning.

They won’t be back full time IF they do open early

You need to plan for that

Teabaseddiet · 03/05/2020 10:29

No. My youngest is shielded so none of us are going anywhere until at least July (probably longer).

Batmanandbobbin · 03/05/2020 10:29

I will be. Buttttt that’s because my maternity leave finishes 18th May and partners AL finishes then I’m a key worker so they’ll be off back regardless.

If I was still off I’d be tempted to keep younger ones home and send elder in. Elder it is now impacting his mental health. Younger one is loving home schooling 😂

Mistystar99 · 03/05/2020 10:30

I'd pack mine off tomorrow if I could!

EducatingArti · 03/05/2020 10:32

It is not just about the risk to children though. It is about risk to everyone.
There is some evidence that the R value in Denmark has gone back up to 0.9 since they started opening some schools (including as much social distancing as possible).
Once the R value goes over 1, we are back to exponential growth, increasing cases on hospitals, other treatments having to be postponed, etc, etc
What we need to do is to get actual cases down to a really low number ( which is why keeping the social distancing rules is still important even though the current peak is over) and having a really rigorous test and trace system in place, with sufficient testing for as many as will need it.
Then, as soon as anyone has symptoms, they are tested and if they have Covid19, all their recent contacts are asked to quarantine completely for 7 or more days. Once this is working effectively and quickly, we will be able to work on opening schools with much less risk to everyone.

x2boys · 03/05/2020 10:34

Nope my son has severe autism and learning disabilities until I his special school can reassure me that they can safely social distance all the children all the whom have complex disabilities than hes staying at home.

Spaghetti123 · 03/05/2020 10:35

It's not just The Telegraph..

"First Minister Mark Drakeford has said schools in Wales could reopen at the beginning of next month

Asked for an indication about when pupils could return, he told the BBC’s Andew Marr Show: “Our advice from the trade unions and from the local education authorities is that you will need three weeks as a minimum from the point that we decide to do that, to when schools can reopen, so we are talking about the beginning of June.”

Drakeford said some groups could return earlier than others, citing the examples of year-six children who are due to move up to secondary school and Welsh medium pupils who may not have had opportunities to use the language at home during lockdown."

Obviously he's just speaking for Wales but England hasn't done very much differently to Wales so far. Apart from Wales having some stricter lockdown rules.

Rosebel · 03/05/2020 10:36

No, even if happens they won't be going back on June 1st.

OptimisticSix · 03/05/2020 10:36

Not unless I'm convinced it's safe and I think thats unlikely at the moment.

ScorpionQueen · 03/05/2020 10:36

It's impossible to social distance in school so if she has to go to school she might as well see her friends. That's her logic. It's not happening.

We've stuck to the guidelines, which will be pointless if they send back the teens.

I'd also want to know how almost fully grown year 12s are in the same allegedly safe group as tiny year 1s in terms of not spreading it after all. My kids will not be Guinea pigs.

StoutDrinker2019 · 03/05/2020 10:38

Of course. I will have to quit my wfh job if lockdown is lifted and my husband is expected to return to work. I cannot do my job with zero childcare or support. Like thousands and thousands of other parents. It is an economic necessity to reopen schools if workplaces are being reopened.

Yurona · 03/05/2020 10:38

Yes, the moment they open. Nobody in the at risk griup that we meet regularly, and the likelyhood of negative effects of isolation is way higher than likelihood of negative effects from Coronavirus

Connie222 · 03/05/2020 10:38

Not a chance. If it’s compulsory then she will be de registered. I’m due a baby in August. My 3rd section will be a complicated one anyway and I’m fucked if I’m taking any more chances than I have to going into it.

Bairnsmum05 · 03/05/2020 10:40

Schools in Scotland will finish up for the summer holidays 3 weeks after this so don't really see much point. Fully expecting them closed until the planned return mid August at the earliest.

Tjsmumma · 03/05/2020 10:40

Im unsure what everyone expects, just stay in lockdown forever? No one ever return as normal? Some people need to return back to work for our livelihood and cant with children still at home, unfortunately.

All these people probably signed the same petition stating that they need more time off because they cant work yet complain when they can return 🤔

Yurona · 03/05/2020 10:41

I wonder if private schools could open earlier? Smaller classes, more staff and more space...

princesscallie · 03/05/2020 10:41

Live in Ireland and am a teacher. It was announced on Friday that schools wouldn't reopen until September and even then it would be on a phased basis and social distancing would have to be complied with. No idea how that will work but weve alot of hurdles to cross before that happens so not thinking about it for now. But there was also lots of rumours that schools would reopen here in june before this announcement and we had decided that we wouldn't be sending our kids. Not worth it. Husband is still working full time so would have needed childcare but would have managed something.

ducksback · 03/05/2020 10:42

My GC will be going back, they are all under six, so in no danger

Sorry, how are you so sure of this? My guess would be that because the govt wants the economy up and running that any any danger to children wil be downplayed. I worry that some children may get very ill becaue of this.

altiara · 03/05/2020 10:42

I would. No school is going to have 100% of staff back ready so am sure it will be staggered or somehow limited.
I’m lucky that I can work from home and my DC aren’t tiny (Y6,9). I just need a break from shouting get off fortnite everyday when I finish hours of conference calls. And I’m worried that my Y6 DS is no longer ready for secondary school.

RoosterPie · 03/05/2020 10:42

Not unless I'm convinced it's safe and I think thats unlikely at the moment

It probably won’t be “safe” for about another year till there’s a vaccine, are you keeping them off for all that time?

Mine is in nursery but she’s not going back on June 1st because while I’m confident that the risk to her is pretty small, I’m pregnant and don’t want to risk it.

ducksback · 03/05/2020 10:43

princess Ireland have it right imo. Safety of staff and children must come first.

princesscallie · 03/05/2020 10:43

Oh we also for a road map of how the county will open back up. It's a 5 phase plan so will see what happens. Has there been one of these issued in England?

HouseTornado · 03/05/2020 10:44

Yes. Because I am slowly losing my mind and want it all to return to normal. And my job (and my students) is/are really suffering.

I am sick of countless neighbours having bbq's, family over, popping down to Cornwall (I wish I were joking)...what's the point in prolonging a return at this point?

Totally respect other people's views and wanting to keep their own kid off - but mine will be back the second it's announced.

ducksback · 03/05/2020 10:44

This is apparently coming on Thursday.
