Going to try not washing my hair during lockdown. Any advice?

My hair is VERY oily. I wash it every day and by the end of each day it’s already oily. Yes I know I should do the whole “leave it two days in between washes” but if I did that I won’t be able to go outside or go to work because it would just look disgusting and dirty.

I’ve been reading up about the “no poo” movement (not using shampoo). I just wondered if anyone else had done this and whether it worked? I’m not due into work until next week so I thought I’d give it a small trial. Any advice appreciated.

You need to slowly stretch it out.
Start by washing every other day - Day 2 will feel gross but at least you have 1 nice day.
After 2 weeks of this, start pushing how long you leave between washes.
I'm happy now with having 3 full days between washes so haven't pushed it further. I like using nice smelling shampoo and conditioner.

If you try and go "cold turkey" you will feel greasy and grim for weeks and weeks and eventually give up.
Little steps at a time will work best in the long run.

I worked with someone who din,t use shapoo. She borrowed some of mine when she had been in the sea, but normally she just used water, and you wouldn,t have known. her hair was about chin length.

When my hair was long I used to wash it around once a week and it was lovely.

I pixied it a year ago and had to go back to daily washing, it’s now shoulder length and I’m back to maybe every three days? I might start just cowashing for a bit, and see what happens.

I always have better curls/waves when I shampoo less.

A week won't be long enough. It takes about 6-8 weeks for your hair to adjust.

I used to wash my hair daily when I was at work, once I retired I decided I would try and wash it less. My hair used to get really filthy travelling on the London Underground.
After 12 months I have managed to get it down to twice a week. I think that keeping your pillowcases really clean makes a difference, and is using a decent hair brush.

I've been experimenting with sulphate free shampoo as I'm trying to wash my hair less (washed every day for years and I'm just trying to make the move to every other day). I tried New Wash and have just started using bumble and bumble invisible oil range which I like as it gives a bit of a lather. It's expensive, but I'm hoping long term (I've only been doing this since lockdown) it'll improve the condition of my hair. My hair does gets greasy each day but I'm finding that I am now able to go a day without washing, although I do tend to tie my hair up on day 2. I thought I'd try sulphate free in order to stop stripping my hair of its natural oils and regulate the greasiness a bit more. It seems to be working! So, no 'no-poo' but a potential convert to sulphate-free poo xxx

Do you use dry shampoo? It's great stuff!

Louabella · 03/05/2020 11:31

I tried this a couple of weeks ago and lasted about 10 days. My hair didn't look too bad if I brushed it lots and put it up, but by day 10 I couldn't bear the feel of it and gave in. I'm not going back to normal shampoo though, I thought I'd try shampoo bars and have found one I really like.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/05/2020 12:06

Lots of combing. It won't feel the same as freshly washed.

RiverCrossing · 03/05/2020 12:37

I have lots of very fine hair and prior to lockdown was washing every other day - I’ve cut out heat entirely at the moment which has done it the world of good and I’m washing once every 5/6 days although obvs showering inbetween. I use Body Shop hair products and then dry shampoo on the days between washes - I can’t say I’ll continue when I have to be facing the world more regularly but it’s certainly healthier now!

RaisinsRuinEverything · 03/05/2020 12:51

Once a week here! Mine has been a lot less greasy since the menopause. Dry shampoo on day 5 gives it a boost. Also try not to touch it (why doesn’t the advice about not touching your face also apply to hair? )

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 12:56

I need to do this too but then give in by day 3 !
Tried everything including special brushes .
All rubbish ..
Will try just water and no shampoo

PutThemInTheIronMaiden · 03/05/2020 18:28

Obviously it won't be for ages but if it works (and if I stick with it) I'll update!

I've heard that one you've got through the grim bit your hair looks ok but if you get caught in the rain it smells a bit like a wet dog!

DieSchottin93 · 03/05/2020 21:47

I have long, fine hair (waist length at the moment) and since lockdown I've been washing it about once a week. By about day 4 the mid-lengths start to get greasy too 🤢 I don't think I could go longer than a week without washing. I've tried dry shampoo but it just makes it look a tiny bit less greasy Sad

Lovely1a2b3c · 03/05/2020 22:01

Ironic name 'No poo' considering unwashed hair probably has faecal bacteria in it!

RedRed9 · 03/05/2020 22:09

I’m also a bit confused. If you’re going to the effort of washing your hair every day with water, what’s the difference to shampooing your hair every day?

ClientQ · 03/05/2020 22:15

@RedRed9 I use conditioner but no shampoo and that was a complete game changer for my hair. So it still gets washed but I just don't use any shampoo on it

Londonborncatty · 03/05/2020 22:20

For those stating their hair is in great condition and they only rinse etc does your head and hair not smell? What happens to the dirt, grime
, cooking smells and sweat? Have you asked anyone honestly to smell your hair? I don’t understand why your head is any different to the rest of your body, in that it needs washing to smell good. Genuine question.

Meggie2008 · 03/05/2020 22:22

I only wash my hair once a week, but I dye my hair such bright colours that I can't wash it often for fading purposes.

ClientQ · 03/05/2020 23:24

@Londonborncatty if you're using conditioner to wash it's effectively like using a cream cleanser on your face instead of soap
Not sure about just water as I've never tried that!!
