There's a giant spider in my house. I'm all alone and I'm.petrified of the bloody things. Please tell me the least traumatic way of getting it out of the house. Thanks

Big!

pretzele · 02/05/2020 18:14

You have my sympathies op. How big are we talking?
I would probably throw the basket out the window.

kerrymucklowe2020 · 02/05/2020 18:14

I darent go back upstairs- I can at a push cope better if it's still - it's the moving that freaks me

Puppy
People who are scared of spiders cannot do this
Correction - some poodle who are scared of spiders may not be able to do this. I do it, with heart pounding and sometimes it takes a couple of goes. But I can. It’s easier with a non-see- through thing though. I used to use a cylindrical biscuit tin.

cardibach · 02/05/2020 18:15

Poodle? People.
Poodles don’t have opposable thumbs so will find it hard.

Spaghetti123 · 02/05/2020 18:29

I will be of no help whatsover but just wanted to tell people that I was walking from my lounge to the bedroom earlier and saw a clump of black thread on the floor so picked it up to put in the bin.

Not a clump of black thread but BIG FUCKING DEAD SPIDER IN MY HAND.

Threw it in the air while physically shuddering and also vocalising shuddering. I can't put it into words but something like urgggggghhhhhhhhhhohhhhhhhhhohhh.

I don't have a spider phobia but it still made me react like that. And I still used tissue to pick it up after it had fallen back to the ground.

PuppyMonkey · 02/05/2020 18:30

I thought you were insulting me by calling me a poodle for a minute there? Grin

Honest, I wouldn’t be able to even look at thing thing, let alone put my hand a couple of centimetres near one. Sad

Snowymascot · 02/05/2020 18:33

Run fucking run.......seriously though I feel for you I’m terrified of them too and there would be no way I would be able to go anywhere near them

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 02/05/2020 18:37

Put the basket outside if it's crawled in and leave it overnight. By morning the spider being most likely a house spider will have come back out and come back inside your warm house where you can't see it. If this happens you must then move on to plan B which involves a lighter and alot of petrol. Douse your house and throw the lighter in. Run.

101problems · 02/05/2020 18:42

I'm sorry, but I do kill any insects which come inside the house.

But I live in a warm climate, and come May, it's not uncommon for a rogue giant cockroach to find its way in... this is despite trying to seal all cracks, keeping the house immaculate, and having cockroach gels and poisons all over the place.

I actually struggle to go into the bathroom alone from now until the end of September, as on two occasions a giant one has appeared in there and it honestly makes me sick.

maggiecate · 02/05/2020 18:43

Do any of your neighbours have a cat that you can borrow to catch it? You may find the odd leg left behind but it’s generally effective

evilonlineohno · 02/05/2020 19:00

@PuppyMonkey I don't like spiders at the best of times but I can quickly put a glass over it so I know it won't run anywhere. Sorry if your just a wimp 🤷‍♀️

NaviSprite · 02/05/2020 19:01

Kick the basket down the stairs and out your back door if possible? I totally get it, DH and I are arachnophobic and he can just about manage to kill them, I just talk at them like a mad person and say “keep away from me, don’t hover above my head on the ceiling and we’re golden, the minute you skitter towards me I will hoover you up!” I don’t know why but talking to them seems to keep me a little calmer!

Artesia · 02/05/2020 20:00

From a humane perspective, there’s little point putting it under a glass and taking it outside. House spiders generally don’t survive a move outside (only about 5%), so although it might make people feel les guilty, it’s not much better than just whacking them with a shoe.

Windyatthebeach · 02/05/2020 22:25

Op I have a spider chart. Maybe you can ID how big if I post it?
Yeah or ney?
Grin

user1473878824 · 03/05/2020 00:26

OP, I am completely the same as you. I once had to run down the road to try and find someone to remove a giant one from my sink. A very kindly builder from about ten doors down did it for me while I sobbed while shouting “PLEASE DON’T PUT IT IN THE BIN”. It sounds like such bonkers bullshit but I’ve found conkers on the windowsills massively help deter them. I’m trying to think what I’d do in your situation apart from sleep on the sofa and cry. Do you think you can build up to getting the basket outside and then drinking several large wines and feeling very proud of yourself but possibly also crying?

SamanthaJayne4 · 03/05/2020 10:57

I try a long handled duster first. If the spider is too jumpy I use my cordless hoover. It's not powerful like a Dyson but it usually sucks them up. You do need some help with this OP. I won't touch a spider but I do try to chuck them outside if I can. I don't have a phobia of them anymore because I always pretended I wasn't scared in front of my DC. Over a few years I must have convinced myself! If only I could convince my claustrophobia to clear off!
