AIBU to think that car insurers should give us all £25 as a goodwill gesture

We've been on lockdown for weeks now with weeks still to come and using our cars only 10% as much as we used to use them but not a dickey bird from the insurance companies who must be absolutely raking it in.

DS2 phoned Diamond last Saturday because his windscreen cracked on Friday. They gave him a £25 refund despite his insurance running out Sunday, and him going elsewhere, and he's still using his car just as much because he's a nurse.

We're with RAC but have had heard nothing. Makes no difference to us though, we still need our cars insuring used or not.

shamalidacdak · 02/05/2020 17:08

That's reasonable. I'm in the US, all the insurers are cutting rates. Why should you pay the same when you're not driving?

lollipoplola · 02/05/2020 17:24

My car hasn't moved for about 6 weeks now so a small refund would be nice

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 02/05/2020 17:37

With Admiral

They have offered a £25 refund per car

Kingjarvis · 02/05/2020 17:38

I use my car every day. I work 5 days a week

notacooldad · 02/05/2020 17:38

I don't live in a high car theft area ;) and I would have thought being at home all day means there is less chance of your car being stolen.

What's the smug wink for? Just because you dont live in a high risk car theft area doesnt mean its risk free.
Cars get stolen and broken I to at night when their owners are in the house.
You are still free to use your car when ever you need to.your average miles may have dropped over the last 2 months but what happens if it suddenly increases for whatever reason later in the year? Would you give your refund back?

Mikikamp · 02/05/2020 18:01

I was considering registering my car as offroad!

Whatsgoingonrightnow · 02/05/2020 18:02

No real way of proving everyone is using their cars less really. Some people are still using theirs to go exercise, others are at work still etc.

lockdownstress · 02/05/2020 18:05

Mine has. Had an email to say they are refunding £25 for exactly that reason. Similar from health insurer £90.

Depends what type of insurance. You have to say upfront. If you had insurance for commuting and you now have to work from home, that is easily probable.

daisypond · 02/05/2020 18:07

Provable!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 02/05/2020 18:11

A lot of people are driving to the shop, to a exercise/dog walking spot, the car is still parked on the drive/road etc and could still be stolen so we still need the insurance.

I haven’t expected anything back from mine tbh as insurance is a service I still need and would use if anything happened to one of my cars

GinnyStrupac · 02/05/2020 18:19

Only £25? Our risk must have reduced by 80% or so now, and for breakdown/recovery too.

BackforGood · 02/05/2020 19:28

I had an e-mail saying they were sending me £25.

However, Insurance companies generally are being hammered - travel (obviously) and weddings and events are all having to pay out in totally unprecedented ways. I'm far more surprised that I have received this money, when you think about the industry as a whole.

CallmeAngelina · 02/05/2020 19:33

We have three cars insured on Admiral's multi-car policy, so we should be in line for £75.

onceuponatimeinsuburbia · 02/05/2020 20:33

Alsohuman the risks are calculated year to year on annual basis anyway (that's why the premiums change) so the insurers won't need to do anything more than make an adjustment to reflect the risk.

JaceLancs · 02/05/2020 20:41

My car insurance was due for renewal recently - I rang current insurers to renegotiate the quote and got over £80 discount for reducing the annual mileage

Fairyliz · 02/05/2020 20:48

Who are all these insurers paying out for travel cancellations? I’ve been booking my own holidays for over 40 years always had travel insurance and never claimed.
Funnily enough now my holiday has been cancelled and I can’t get the money back from airline or travel company apparently Covid19 isn’t covered.
Insurance companies always profit whatever happens I can understand how people defend them.
