To really not care about football right now?

Frangipanini · 02/05/2020 09:19

Obviously I care about support staff losing their jobs but I really DO NOT give a stuff about FIFA or massive salaries of football stars who refused to do their bit during this crisis. I am sick of seeing the reinstatement of football as headline news.

Surely, if there is every going to be a time to reset this joke of an industry it is now.

If they start up matches again I hope all these people who threw their toys out of the pram about pay cuts when other staff were furloughed, are shunned and booed on the pitch for years.

250000 a week is chucked around when i would think the number of players who earn that in england is in single figures and i bet theyre at the big clubs owned by multibillionaires who can afford it

redwoodmazza · 02/05/2020 10:34

My DH is a football fan and I am not. I have told him how the spitting always makes me feel sick. And how the fuck do the cameramen manage to zoom in just as they do it? Gross....

BUT I did read the other day that when it returns, spitting could be banned! Result! Yay!!!

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 10:35

I imagine that football club lawyers will be writing future contracts to allow for a pay reduction if there are no matches.

Definitey Choccyp1g. I bet there are many clubs wishing they had followed Wimbledon’s (as in tennis, not the football club) example and taken out pandemic insurance.

maccaroni · 02/05/2020 10:36

I’m annoyed we are still paying for season tickets with no football being played. I don’t understand why they can’t freeze payment and restart when games resume.

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 10:41

Football won't boost my morale, but then both my teams suck and i've not missed watching them lose every weekend.

I always get dead paranoid saying that I'm not in a rush for it to come back because I'll just get accused of being a bitter Everton fan who wants to stop Liverpool winning the league. I'd happily give them the title by default since they were going to win it whatever. I don't see how they can bring it back next month without compromising people's health though, and I don't just mean the players and managers, I mean the matchday staff.

Rashford is boss. Plenty of Everton players have done their bit, and Ancelotti and Duncan Ferguson too. They're not all like that imbecile Moise Kean.

Pukkatea · 02/05/2020 10:41

They are a business, an industry. I presume you are equally annoyed by hearing about all the airlines, wetherspoons etc?

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 10:43

@maccaroni That's ridiculous. You shouldn't have to be paying. I can't afford a season ticket myself but my brother's a season ticket holder at Goodison and even then they're not cheap.

mrsBtheparker · 02/05/2020 10:44

How sad that the world doesn't just revolve around what interests you!

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 10:44

@Pukkatea Yes, but then it doesn't surprise me about Spoons because Tim Martin is a shitbag of an employer.

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 10:46

Also, footballers behaving badly: which ones? Jack Grealish and Oumar Niasse got done for driving offences, Kyle Walker and Moise Kean got done for having sex parties, but they're a drop in a bucket. Everton players in general have been staying home, doing workouts, phoning fans, keeping in touch via Zoom and Whatsapp. I dare say other clubs are doing the same.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 10:49

Football clubs should treat their fans fairly.
People will have long memories after things go back to normal! Remember who was there for you!

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 10:54

Plenty of Everton players have done their bit

Not coronavirus PhilSwagielka but I saw a video on twitter of Tom Davies meeting a Liverpool fan for World Mental Health Day. He was so nice to him. Mind you I have such a soft spot for him and Dominic Calvert Lewin. I knew Ancelotti and Ferguson had been phoning shielding Everton fans which is lovely. I also like Ancelotti loving Crosby beach.

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 10:59

I saw that as well and it was really sweet. Everton in the Community is one thing I do like about Everton, and Ferguson does a hell of a lot for it. One of the fans he phoned has now died of cancer, so that call must have meant a lot.

Kingjarvis · 02/05/2020 11:00

They are trying to start up other sports. Where’s the hate for them?

TooLittleTooLate80 · 02/05/2020 11:02

football stars who refused to do their bit during this crisis

Not sure why football is continuously singled out (although I have my suspicisions).

I've read more about footballers giving back than most other high paid sports/entertainment industries.

Whattodowhattodooo · 02/05/2020 11:04

I miss my bloody football! I know I'm probably in the minority but I can not wait for Super Sunday to start back. Football on, all doors and windows open, sunny day, cooking a roast and enjoying a nice cold pint of bitter shandy.

Oh the dream 😊

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/05/2020 11:15

Happy with the way my club have acted during this. However do feel the behind closed doors plan is a bit dumb. To be on telly you would still need staff. There would still need to be ground staff and a few dotted around the stadium. No doubt ball boys as well otherwise things would take longer

All it would take is a positive test and bam. You would hope things would stop but who knows.

It's all about money though and just seems to be pressure to get this season done.

Though has been nice not to get annoyed..and technically still be in the Champions league lol

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 11:40

A few footballers have done good deeds.
To tar them all with the same brush is a bit much. There was one on bbc breakfast last month who has set up a charity for disadvantaged kids ( player for England in the World Cup but don't know his name?)
He seemed very genuine. Maybe others give to charity anonymously.
Many are not great but many do have image problems sometimes and are too highly paid!
Maybe this will focus a few minds.

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 11:41

Everton in the Community is one thing I do like

Oh yes, they have done a lot with Tommy Dunne to raise awareness of dementia. That was quite groundbreaking, especially as it started before the evidence about the old leather footballs and dementia was more widely accepted. I just know Tommy from Twitter, not real life but he is amazing

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 11:46

That was Marcus Rashford The80sweregreat. Many clubs and players coming out of this well. Others not so well but the focus on footballers taking a pay cut is unfair when there are plenty of other overpaid celebrities.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/05/2020 11:47

Thing is also just because donations etc isnt mentioned or published doesnt mean they're not doing it. Just seems to be footballers that get stick. Not every club has announced their players plans in terms of wages..wage cuts. Doesnt mean its not happening though

tttigress · 02/05/2020 11:50

YANBU, they are obsessing about when they can restart the league.

Other countries in a better position than the UK have abandoned their leagues for this season. The UK should do the same.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 12:24

Marcus , yes, he seemed devoted to his cause. I think M Ps should take a bloody big pay cut too : have a go at them.

PhilSwagielka · 02/05/2020 14:02

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee They can't win. If they don't do it openly, they get accused of being mean. If they do do it openly, as was the case with Neymar, it's virtue signalling or they're not giving enough.

Seelowbrown · 02/05/2020 14:09

I have a ST for a premier league club but find this clamour to resume a bit distasteful currently. It won’t be in front of fans when it does resume (Which I actually think will be later in the year and this season will be ended like in France). Clubs are going to lose a hell of a lot of money on the back of that and from the lack of sponsors going forward. It could be the wake up call it needs as an industry.
