Homes Under The Hammer Selfish Ruiners of EVERYTHING

AIBU to really hate people on HUTH who buy beautiful Victorian family homes and turn them into scruffy flats set for a life of minging curtains and a million wheelie bins parked outside?

I know it makes financial sense to do this if you buy a big property but ffs ... leave the Victorian shit alone!

I watched one where they bought a gorgeous 5 bedroom Victorian terraced house. Huge original fireplaces, stain glass windows etc etc ... it needed a lot of work doing yes but the building itself was amazing.

“So, what are your plans for this gorgeous property”

“Well I’m gonna turn it into flats innit” fuck off

Oh yes, Escape To The Country. There's always a pair of twats on it stating that the kitchen of a property is too small. Despite it being the size of the footprint of my house with an island the size of my car.

Pickles89 · 02/05/2020 12:09

The only time I ever watched it they took a gorgeous Georgian building and smashed down the back wall to make one giant roof to ground window. It broke my heart, and I never watched it again. 'Modern' houses are hideous enough anyway, without destroying period properties to create the 'look'.

Kazzyhoward · 02/05/2020 12:16

If people actually wanted to live in these old houses, they'd buy them. Developers pick them up cheap at auctions because no one else wants them.

LunariaAlba · 02/05/2020 12:19

Are you serious ChrissieKeller61 ? Councils very rarely house people these days. They sold most of their housing stock and it's now housing associations working with councils who provide social housing. The notion that a private landlord is depriving some poor council staff of their income and pension is ridiculous.
I love the cheesy music on HUTH and I too worry about Martin.
Anyone else finding posts by a Notso and an Oldsu has a certain poetic rhythm.

lollipoplola · 02/05/2020 12:21

We've done a few renovations and I think the cost of the renovations are realistic because I think most of them are like us with contacts of people who are willing to pop in to check out the electric, gas and plumbing on short notice and mates rates.
I also agree with a pp though in that some of them make next to no effort. White paint then rent it out without touching the hideous bathroom or kitchen. If I wouldn't live in a property I won't rent it out.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 12:22

Escape to the country annoys me so much as the people seem so smug. They have made oddles out of a normal place then want a mansion with acres for an allotment or chickens or goats and moan if a lane or A road is anywhere near them!
A lot of Homes under the hammer ones are quite old now too.
' you can get x y or z amount from some poor renter ; per calendar month' and everyone is so happy about this fact. The renter should be able to buy a property not give them more money to recoup the costs.
Grr!
I do predict an uptake in this behaviour once prices crash next year as I bet they do. many developers already waiting to pounce I bet :(

QuestionableMouse · 02/05/2020 12:23

Ugh I agree @Sparklingbrook.

I live in a pretty village but there's nothing particularly special about it iyswim?

A couple from London bought the big house as a second home and every time they visit they cause utter fucking chaos.

The muck spreading smells. Someone rose past their garden and left horse poo behind. The farm is too noisy. The shop doesn't have the random shit they want. It just goes on and on.

I wish they'd fuck off.

MashedSpud · 02/05/2020 12:26

I haven’t seen it ages but I caught half of one a few weeks back and they pulled the carpet up and uncovered a lovely Victorian floor they kept.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 12:30

Question, I bet! To rock up and expect London type shops and services must grate a lot.
People! Never fail to disappoint.

Davespecifico · 02/05/2020 12:32

“Flats innit.” What on earth are you insinuating?!

I haven’t seen too much character ripped out in this programme. More the pool of properties isn’t strong enough for us to see much character in the first place.

The problem with this programme and similar e.g. Bargain Hunt is that they’re is so much same old, same old that the programme makers can’t get the variety they need to make the programmes interesting. So they need to fall back on duller material.

rillette · 02/05/2020 12:49

Bob Mortimer does a great impression of Martin

TheGirlFromStoryville · 02/05/2020 12:57

Watching it now. More bland houses with that awful grey carpet!

ppeatfruit · 02/05/2020 12:59

Sparkling Grin I shout at Escape to the Country too Grin I love it when one of the viewers says something about the road noise outside. I yell "have you got a car then what are you going to do park it 2 miles away?" Grin it's never the M25 they're complaining about Grin

TellingBone · 02/05/2020 13:04

I've often thought of writing a song with the lyrics, 'Crack in me wall gonna fix it oh yeah/Woodchip in the hall gonna fix it oh yeah.'

Guaranteed royalty income for years.

JADS · 02/05/2020 13:32

@MagnoliaJustice We have plastic fence panels for the bottom 2 feet then a 3 x 6 wood panel. It doesn't look as good as a 5 x 6 panel, but the neighbours' garden is higher with thick Leylandii bushes. The bottom of the panels get wet and rot quickly because our neighbours shove lots of rubbish down by the fence base. The Leylandii would have needed to be utterly hacked back to get a 5 x 6 panel into the concrete posts. Even with the 3x 6, the bushes only look decent now, 2 years down the line. It wasn't laziness that was the reason for our decision. The plastic panels will far outlast the wood bits. We have proper grass too!

Oliversmumsarmy · 02/05/2020 13:34

Escape to the country is so depressing.

People looking for brick coffins in some dreary landscape in the countryside where they can die.

EvilPea · 02/05/2020 13:39

Escape to the country.

“Can you find me the oldest property, with the most rickety stairs and largest garden for my retirement, when I’m already suffering with back problems”

BakedCam · 02/05/2020 14:04

Do you not have bins, OP?

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 14:18

It's always converted barns in Escape to the country. Big old beams. Also so clean and tidy too ; no messy cupboards or bread crumbs on the floor.
' ticks all the boxes' ; give me strength.
It's an annoying show.
I should stop watching it! 😀

GnomeDePlume · 02/05/2020 14:18

Both times we did up bungalows it cost around £13k for full rewire (materials only DH did the work), new kitchen and bathroom, flooring throughout (carpets, tiles etc) installed or renovated central heating, decorating, curtains/blinds in all rooms.

TrickyKid · 02/05/2020 14:20

Yanbu. Awful program with really low standard renovations.

EricaNernie · 02/05/2020 15:22

And Grand Designs, I cant watch without thinking of the gogglebox comments, "what a wanker"

DrManhattan · 02/05/2020 15:33

@EricaNernie
Another harsh winter in the caravan

EricaNernie · 02/05/2020 15:37

Everey time, and never child friendly results imo

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 15:44

Grand designs : the woman always ends up pregnant living in the caravan! There was a lovely barn conversion on it once. It was beautiful and had heaps of money spent on the stairs! I'd love to live somewhere classy with fixtures and fittings not from b and q!
😀
