Not sure of a parish councils full role but were are grade 2 listed and conservation area and all planning / listed buildings / tree work you apply to district council but goes via a parish council committee as well as district council. On website says they are responsible for community facilities in village and cemetery, highways, litter, tourism etc. Ours are coordinating the elderly coronavirus response.

@isabellerossignol our parish council fanny about with planning applications mainly - and the county council promptly ignores their recommendations usually!

They work on the neighbourhood plan, tackle local issues like speeding in the villages, bus services, improve amenities. They are the people we approach first about any and all local issues in theory.

Ours are mainly fundraising for the hall roof and trying to improve and protect green spaces. My step-MIL is chair of ours.

Ours serves 5 villages in the parish so quite a large area.

@isabellerossignol, they are the lowest tier of local government and deal with local government issues at a community level, with links into the local authority that they are part of. They are also statutory planning consultees. They make decisions about how best to deliver local and national government services to their community and might liase directly with national bodies like the highways England, the environment agency etc. In my area they also give grants to local u youth groups etc and are coordinating the COVID-19 Support response.

"There was a poster a while ago talking about her village and how it had a bank a couple of pubs a couple of take aways and a number of shops.
She would not accept that it wasn’t really a village because it had a village hall."

But Kidlington in Oxfordshire is technically a village. Claims to be the largest village in the U.K (but this is disputed). Has over 50 shops, 7 pubs, a library, supermarket, airport and leisure centre.

Isn't that why they get bus loads of Chinese tourists visiting?

Maybe not..

That's interesting about parish councils. Is it only rural areas that have them?

herecomesgeralt · 04/05/2020 00:40

I live in a small seaside town/village - not really sure which it is. It definitely has a village feel, but it's extremely busy with tourists in summer. Nearest town (with lots of shops/pubs and restaurants/supermarkets) is 12 miles away.

As soon as you leave you are surrounded by fields and there are no street lights. We were completely cut off by the Beast from the East.

It's almost impossible to get anywhere without driving because there is one very early bus and one that is too early (by minutes) for most people to use it to get home from work - from the larger town, that is.

I live very rurally. Always have done. What’s the problem?

To be honest I thought most on here lived in London!

ToffeeYoghurt · 04/05/2020 01:36

Glittery It seems from this thread like everyone thinks everyone lives in London but actually everyone lives rurally! Many probably used to live in London but have since left for a better quality of life.

BikeRunSki · 04/05/2020 08:13

@isabellerossignol, not even all rural areas have parish councils. They seem to have evolved from local need. There do seem to be a handful of urban parish councils.
