A slug. As in a slug of oil, a slug of wine...how much?

How much would you say it is?

To settle a family debate with a precosoius teenager!

It’s a glug here. Slugs are naked snails or an American punch Smile

DonLewis · 01/05/2020 21:42

Oh no, a whole new problem!

In our family, if we want to put a 'splash' of liquid in a dish, it's described as a slug.

Or if you're drinking spirits out of a bottle, it's a slug.

A slug is more than a splash though. It's, well, a slug.

My teenager is new to this and googled it. He thinks a slug is virtually a fucking metric tonne. When it's clearly not!

Just because Google:

wikidiff.com/glug/slug

CandleNoBra · 01/05/2020 21:45

As per above link, a slug can be a drink getting necked back but if you’re pouring it out it’s the amount to make the glug sound Grin

Hopeisnotastrategy · 01/05/2020 21:46

Five eighths of a mouthful. Enough to get a good taste and mouthfeel without the mouth being overwhelmed.

mumwon · 01/05/2020 21:49

I assume (watching mumsnet)that a slug of wine (or anything alcoholic) increases as the evening progresses Grin Just because I don't drink (except my drug of choice - tea) doesn't mean I find this quite amusing & tea doesn't come in slugs/glugs or dashes

DonLewis · 01/05/2020 21:50

@mumwon how much milk do you take in your tea? A slug? Or a glug?

Mouthful

Thomasina79 · 01/05/2020 21:57

Hmm a teaspoon of oil, and half a glass of wine? Oil is very calorific (but then so is wine, but you can drink the rest, I know, I know, even more calories!). And then, of course, a teaspoon of oil is not enough so you bung in some butter and more oil, drink the wine, serve dinner (with added butter and more wine) and then fall asleep. Sorry, what was the question?

GabriellaMontez · 01/05/2020 21:57

A slug should sound literally like a slug regardless of the liquid.

Note: not the slimy kind. I mean the onomatopoeia kind.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 01/05/2020 22:00

A slug, a glug, a splash... all a healthy pour here. Depends on the dish and my mood. Cooking is an art!

Feduppluckingmychinhairs · 01/05/2020 22:02

A slug is like if you took a swig out of a bottle. Therefore I would class a slug as a mouthful

mumwon · 01/05/2020 22:02

Aha good point op Grin! I introducing the milk to my tea so its less than a splash/glug/slug (like my tea s-t-r-o-n-g with a smidgeon of milk which is less than aforementioned terms Grin)

Hassled · 01/05/2020 22:09

I don't think I've ever heard of a slug in this context. But my instinct tells me a slug is a tablespoon. If you curled an actual slug up it would fit in a tablespoon.

Cismyfatarse1 · 01/05/2020 22:12

A slug is a slow glug. So, hold the bottle carefully as too much tipping and slug becomes glug. Even more tipping and you get a slosh or, even worse, a splosh.

opticaldelusion · 01/05/2020 22:13

I'd say about 50ml.

WhenItIsOver · 01/05/2020 22:15

A good dollop.

Toybox88 · 01/05/2020 23:10

A big mouthful

mummmy2017 · 02/05/2020 00:51

A slug of oil means tip the bottle up till the oil starts to pour the stop pouring instantly.
A slug of wine is the same , taking some as fast as you can.
You took a slug of wine , while no one was looking.
It's about a mouthful.
