Where to live

Just reading a thread and got me thinking.
We have our house on the market and the plan was to stay local but now I am wondering if this is the time to be thinking about a change??
I would like to live in a village that has a school, pub, shop.....I would like to be close to a place where there are restaurants and cinema-life I suppose??
I would love to open the door and have some nice walks at the end of the road.
I feel im expecting a lot especially on a budget of about 180k???

Don’t know where you are, what are property prices like in your area? What does £180k get you?
Live in a village with pub and shop etc? All well and good until the pub or shop closes then it’s a mission to get somewhere just to buy milk or bread.
Do you have a car? Do you need a bus service ?

MinnieMountain · 01/05/2020 17:02

Do you mind driving lots?

Redtartanshoes · 01/05/2020 17:04

Lots of parts of scotland you’d get that

Theworldisfullofgs · 01/05/2020 17:05

How big do you need your house to be?

DollyDoneMore · 01/05/2020 17:10

It entirely depends on where you are and what type of property you want. And what you mean by “close”. There aren’t many villages with cinemas, I would guess.

Wynston · 01/05/2020 17:21

So we currently live in west wales.
Lots of beautiful beaches.
The nearest town is 20minutes away.
Closest hospital is an hour away.
I feel like I spend so much time in the car.
I cant put into words how I feel but I read people's posts and wonder if we are missing out a little on life???

If your wanting rural you have to accept time in the car?

Wales is a good place for your budget. Ex-council houses in nice villages can be sold at that price and are good size 3 beds. I would look at what's important, we found nice pubs we liked and then looked at the villages in or around each and compared pros cons.
You could do the same with schools, beauty spots, towns you like ect

Take a drive to them, walk around them, go in the shop, go to the pub. Pretend you live there for an afternoon. Maybe after lockdown though?

I don't think you can have a village with pub etc and walls at the end of the road AND be close to restaurants and cinemas.

West Wales is beautiful - stay where you are. Otherwise you could probably get close to what you're looking for if you moved closer to Swansea.

MinnieMountain · 01/05/2020 19:21

A friend lives in Llangennech. She really likes it. It's 20 minutes drive from Swansea.

Do you want more culture OP? I loved growing up in north Pembs but the restaurants are a bit lacking.

Wynston · 02/05/2020 16:45

Just feels as though there is a world out there and we are bit out off it......I suppose I just wondered if anyone had any nice suggestions for living.

Neath / Swansea area. I live a mile from Neath town with its mainline railway line to London, there is a swimming pool, cinema, shops, indoor market and some pubs and restaurants. Swansea is a 15-minute drive and the Gower beaches are accessible. Brecon is less than an hour away and lots of county parks/walks/waterfalls nearby. Cardiff is a 50-minutedrive. My village has a post office, pub, church, chapel and two schools. Nice walks on the doorstep. I've lived in rural mid Wales where everything was a long drive and in central London. I love where I live now. Some ideas within your budget,

This is in a good location.

I suppose you're looking at as @LockdownCwtches has suggested or maybe Northern England for your price range.

Randomly I have settled in Peterborough. House prices are within your budget, it's 50 minutes from London on the fast train, has a lovely river and is close to some good walks. But not a village and I appreciate that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Millicent10 · 02/05/2020 22:11

I don’t mind Peterborough myself but it gets consistently voted as one of the worse places to live in those yearly surveys.

crystalize · 02/05/2020 22:23

Never been to that part of south Wales but those houses are good value! What about North Wales - Menai Bridge in Anglesey is fab. Close to Bangor for city, shopping etc plus some fab eateries in Menai... and a Waitrose. Love the beaches on Anglesey. Its a magical place.

Darbs76 · 02/05/2020 22:26

North wales has fairly cheap house prices. Have a look on a map and check rightmove for costs.

gegs73 · 02/05/2020 22:27

Lincoln would fit the bill

MinnieMountain · 02/05/2020 22:42

I've never got the Peterborough bashing @Millicent10. I'm here because DH is from here but it's really not that bad.

MrsJoshNavidi · 03/05/2020 09:59

Aw Lockdown! I grew up in Bryncoch. You're giving me the hiraeth Sad

Funsize123 · 03/05/2020 15:52

I’m feeling the same. Where we are now we are looking at around £250k+ for a tiny two bed flat with no garden. Just can’t save enough for a deposit.
We are thinking of Cornwall x
