Care Home Victory

In light of all the bad press Care Homes are getting at the moment, AIBU to share this amazing success with you all? Approx 3 weeks ago we received the dreaded call from FIL's Care Home to advise us that they had a confirmed Covid case. One of the residents had briefly been in hospital and had unfortunately brought it back home with them (prior to this the home had already been closed to visitors for several weeks to protect the residents). We immediately feared the worst and prepared for further bad news. However, the home immediately implemented strict distancing/isolation measures, ensuring residents stayed in their rooms at all times, with all the staff wearing appropriate PPE to protect themselves and the residents. They ensured that family members were updated constantly and arranged regular Skype calls between residents and family members, even though their work load was massively increased. They did their best to ensure that the residents all still had activities to do and weren't sat alone all day. After the required 14 day period they have been able to relax procedures back to normal again, all residents have been allowed back out of their rooms and, remarkably, not one other person (resident or staff member) has contracted Covid. What an achievement! Just wanted to share this for those who may be worried about their own relatives in similar situations, and show that despite what you see in the press, Care Homes are not lost causes when it comes to dealing with this.

so pleased to hear that. sounds very similar to the one dc is in, except it wasn't a confirmed case..

Carehome staff are fantastic. It might be easier in a nursing home as there are experienced registered nurses and patients have their own rooms. Maybe residential homes are finding it more diffucult as they have more visits from doctors and district nurses.

Care home staff should be paid the same as nurses in my opinion.

When my gran was alive she received far better care from the carers in the care home than in the odd time she was admitted to hospital.

I work in a dementia unit, we have had no cases at all. It would have catastrophic if it ever got in.

When I worked in a carehome I did get paid more than the NHS but didnt get sickpay or unsocial hours which makes a big difference. Plus you're pretty much on your own if a resident becomes unwell or theres any emergency. No onsite doctor or machinery to help. All care staff deserve better recognition and pay increases. I suspect private homes would just push up the fees though.

That's a very uplifting story, thanks for sharing.

I'm in a Dementia home too, like vodkaredbullgirl no cases with us too, we did have a scare, and had resident isolated for a temp, but it wasn't covid. Its so hard to isolate them they just don't get it, and need to wander and be social.
We feel like we are holding our breath waiting for it to arrive. It will run through the place like wildfire if it gets in.

Our nurses are paid equal to top band 5 and band 6 so paid well, It's the carers that get minimum wages that need more. They should get the same as the Healthcare support workers in the NHS.
