Bought a house a few months ago, and the garden is huge and stunning. I know bugger all about gardening and I’m as useless as a chocolate tea pot. The gardener of the previous owner had worked there for 15 years so we decided to keep them on. They asked for more hours per week as they said the garden needed a bit of an overhaul/extra time than they had been able to give. Fair enough. We also paid them quite a lot of money to spend a weekend clearing out weeds, old shrubs they said needed to go. All fine so far.

A week later I come home to find they they have absolutely mutilated my garden. They had removed about 6/7 trees and shrubs and essentially left a huge fucking patch of dirt around my garden. I think received a hefty bill for this and also then had to pay to have the trees removed.

I was in a state of shock I suppose and thought “what’s done is done”, paid and didn’t say anything else. He kept working for us. I asked if he had a plan of what to replace the trees with and he said “that’s not really what I do, landscaping”. So no. Just a dirt heap in my garden.

Luckily a good friend of mine is a genius with gardens and has developed a beautiful plan but now that lockdown has stopped everything and I am looking at my shitty fucking dirt patch every day where there were such beautiful trees...I’m just getting ragier and ragier (I doubt those are words but you know what I mean).

AIBU? Should I let it go? Can I even do anything at this stage?!

Here’s a tree as a thank you for reading such a long post 🌲

my father in law once did this to my garden while i was away. he totally thought it was an improvement. i think some people genuinely think an ideal garden has little living in it because it's tidier.
i was furious.

Reginabambina · 30/04/2020 16:44

Grow a backbone and fire him.

MaxNormal · 30/04/2020 16:53

What he did was shit, but you can totally put something nicer in than the not very exciting shrubs that were there before. But you definitely need to get him gone.

Jux · 30/04/2020 16:54

Oh dear, that would make me cry. You've sacked him presumably? I reckon he's sold them on; no one would be stupid enough to just burn them would they? People pay huge sums for mature shrubs and trees.

You poor thing.

Do you have any seeds you could at least start until lockdown? You could grow lettuce and other veg now for a while. I'm sure they sell seeds/plants at supermarkets.

BovaryX · 30/04/2020 16:55

I think he should have just called me like “hey I want to cut down all these trees”. It’s a bit shit to just do it, present a hefty bill plus a removal bill, and then say he has no plans to plant or what to do in that area

I would have been furious. The worst thing is he seems to have removed the lovely tall tree from the corner. My gardener would never remove a tree without any discussion or permission. How long had that tree been there?

SucculentCandle · 30/04/2020 16:58

How come they were all in such shitty condition if he'd been "taking care' of them for 15 years?

Hanab · 30/04/2020 17:01

I think they were valuable and they stole them 🤷🏻‍♀️ You need to get rid asap!

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2020 17:02

To be fair op, most of it was quite unpleasant and over grown before, so now you can start to fill it with beautiful things you love.

I’m not too sure you’ve lost much, but he should have thinned it out and left some neat bits,

GinnyStrupac · 30/04/2020 17:02

The large tree at the back wasn't a monkey puzzle, was it? I can't quite see on this device.

MarieG10 · 30/04/2020 17:02

I would have sacked him just for how he had maintained the garden without even chopping them down

SunflowerSeedsForever · 30/04/2020 17:05

Looks like it is next door

monkeymonkey2010 · 30/04/2020 17:05

He took the opportunity - and your naivety - to create himself a garden that's easier to maintain!
If he doesn't do 'landscaping' then he shouldn't have completely changed the 'landscape' by annihilating the border trees!!!
'Pruning' is in his job description - not tree surgeon!

I can't believe you kept him on!
Now he'll want higher fees i bet....

caperberries · 30/04/2020 17:06

I'm surprised you would even need a gardener for a garden that size. It certainly doesn't look huge in the pictures. And now the only shrubs are gone, there's nothing left for him to do. Presumably, you or dh can cut the lawn. Sack him.

SunflowerSeedsForever · 30/04/2020 17:07

They were not valuable

They hadn't been either planted or maintained properly. So as you can see in the photo when 1 is removed it exposes the dead lower branches of another. They are straggly as planted too close together.

billy1966 · 30/04/2020 17:10

First off, he can't be trusted.
He acted unilaterally and presented you with the bill, you definitely would have been justified in refusing to pay for work you didn't authorise.

However, unfortunately diseased trees and plants don't often present as such.

I have a large garden, with many trees far taller than our house. A couple, over the years, I decided to have removed.

One, an enormous Silver Birch, was because of the storms we were having, and it just seemed like the right call.

I felt a bit bad, until the tree surgeon told us it was diseased, and would have had to come down eventually.

Same thing with some apple trees and other large bushes and plants.

We had a crew come in and price clearing the garden of anything dead when we bfirst bought the house.

The guy who did ours gave me a choice over some trees and plants that would last a few more years, but were dying.

I kept one apple tree that was just so pretty, but he was right, it was dead in 5 years.

If you feel he diddled you, you are probably right, it's just a pity you didn't have a conversation to confirm they really were dead.

Take this time find a good garden centre and local recommendations for a landscaper.

It will look great when its doneFlowers

SunflowerSeedsForever · 30/04/2020 17:11

Looks like a larch

squirrelsbizaar · 30/04/2020 17:15

I would be wondering if he’s uprooted them and given the trees back to The previous occupant of your house. I’m not a gardener, so don’t know how feasible it is they would survive, but if he’ll do anything for money I wouldn’t be surprised. Natural cynic that I am.

billy1966 · 30/04/2020 17:18

OP, sorry, just had a much closer look.
I think he probably did a good job in the long run. There wasn't anything there I would have kept.
I wouldn't call those trees either, more like big bushes.

This is probably a good opportunity to start over.

However, if you hadn't planned on spending that money now its annoying.

CrazyTimesAreOccurring · 30/04/2020 17:19

Doubt it @squirrel as OP said the woman had died.

Not trying to be wise after the event, but the fact they'd been the previous person's gardener and allowed the trees to 'die', and so much apparently needed to be done after 15 years in post, was a clue to how rubbish they were I would have thought

boylovesmeerkats · 30/04/2020 17:20

Gardening is pretty unregulated, my brother does it but is a poor gardener. He can cut grass and hedges but then sadly people might trust him to do more. Maybe a similar trap you've fallen into. I can't believe anyone decent would cut that down without asking. Don't be too sad though, there are nicer trees and shrubs. I'm not sure if any of them were conifers but they're trouble anyway.

Get planting, magnolias are nice, Acer's. Would be good to have more colour than you've had. It seems slow now but you might grudgingly thank him one day. Don't pay him another penny though!

CSIblonde · 30/04/2020 17:20

That looks awful OP. Id be so upset too, I'd suspect he's done that so all he has to do is the lawn . I'm an untrusting witch, but I never give anyone carte blanche to do what they want re my home any more because they've often wanted to do what's easier for them but looks rubbish to me. Can you get some fast growing stuff like roses & lavender, & some clematis for the fence along the back, to take the edge off all the dirt & give you something to look at, until a proper restoration? And some potted stuff you like too, that can be then transplanted or kept potted according the the plans. Trying to find a positive, its a blank canvas now so try & focus on how great the revamp will be.

goingtotown · 30/04/2020 17:21

He’s probably been ripping off the previous owner for years.

Jaxhog · 30/04/2020 17:22

Wow! I wouldn't have paid them a single penny for doing this. I have a gardener and he wouldn't dream of doing anything as drastic as this without detailed consultation first.

I would make a comment on his trade site (if he's on one - google him), and on the Nextdoor website. Something like 'here's a photo of what someone did to my garden. What would you think? The person who did this is xxxxx'.

Nextdoor is also a good place to ask for recommendations for someone to fix it. Our gardener is working during the lockdown. And next time, make sure they tell you exactly what they will be doing first. Good luck.

ilikemethewayiam · 30/04/2020 17:24

Did you not walk around the garden together to discuss what you wanted him to do? Sounds like you gave him carte Blanche to do what he wanted. I don’t really think you have a leg to stand on.

EasyPleasey · 30/04/2020 17:25

Yanbu. OP fire him, never let him on your property again. He has done an awful job, even if there was a misunderstanding he has shown himself to be an awful gardener. Can you buy some plants now shops are opening up and start working on it yourself?
