to not have any curtains?

or blinds or nets or any window covering at all?

We are set back from the road, no neighours in front. Neighbours to one side have a small window that means they could see over their drive over our drive into the side window of our living room if they really wanted to.

There's 2 box bays that look so much brighter now I've taken down the previous owners dark curtains. The rooms are north and west facing so not huge amounts of sun at the best of times.

I like the look .... but will people just think we can't afford curtains! We moved in in January and I've closed them twice - both times when DH wasn't here when we first moved in and I was a bit twitchy new house on my own. Haven't been closed since.

You wont like the look in winter

Lolalovesmarmite · 30/04/2020 10:55

If it suits you then go for it. We had shutters in our last house which was great as when they were opened up to the side you didn’t lose any light. Curtains are horrible dusty spider hotels anyway.

1Morewineplease · 30/04/2020 10:56

We have curtains in most rooms but never close them.
We don’t have curtains in our bedroom and we actually like the look, clean lines etc...

Frariedeamin · 30/04/2020 10:57

I would be worried about your heating bill and overall energy efficiency, especially in the cooler months.

peoplewhoannoyyou · 30/04/2020 10:58

YABU. Drawing the curtains prevents heat loss and therefore you're killing the planet by not using them.

Welshmaenad · 30/04/2020 10:59

I don't have curtains (fussy, dusty, dark!) but I do have blinds. I would at least put some blinds in to give you the option to block light/keep in a bit of heat.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 30/04/2020 10:59

We didn’t have any in our last house that was completely unoverlooked, except in the kids’ bedrooms. I loved the look of it.

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2020 10:59

I have nothing downstairs, we are not over looked. Most people think it’s either the right decision due to the view, don’t even notice or think I would be mad to put something up , but one makes hints that it can only be because I can’t afford it. 🤣

That’s not the issue, genuinely. I just haven’t been able to decide what I want, as it’s a very old listed building.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 30/04/2020 11:01

We’ve been in our house 5 years and still haven’t got around to putting up curtains in our dual-aspect living room.
We’re set back from the road and up a steep bank, so you’d have to come right up to the house to see in.
The only time I think “Dammit - wish we’d bought some curtains” is on the rare occasions we use the dining table (next to the south-facing window) and the sun streams straight into everyone’s eyes.

Butterbeaninjeans · 30/04/2020 11:02

I posted this on home decor last week. I'm loving the look of no curtains and will never be able to afford blinds/shutters for massive windows so I'm going to leave for now and reassess in winter

I think come summer you might be surprised at how hot the west facing rooms with the bay windows become. I have two very large bays at the front of my west facing house and they get all the afternoon sun, both rooms are like greenhouses if I leave the blinds up and the bedlinen in my spare room has a noticeable line across the duvet where it's been bleached by sun. Conversely in the winter lots of heat is lost through such large windows and the rooms would be cold without thermal lined blinds. It is your house so obviously your choice but you might think differently after living there for a while. I'm not a fan of fussy window coverings so have Roman blinds

Katinski · 30/04/2020 11:09

My place is built into a hillside. Neighbours either side, but only glorious views front and back.Double and triple glazed windows make it economy efficient.Only curtain I have is a cafe net in the kitchen.(the kitchen's close to the front door and I really don't want to frighten the postie as I drift about nekkid)
OP, sod what other people think.

Perfidy · 30/04/2020 11:15

The west window gets oblique sun as the direct sun is blocked by next door. But I maybe need to see how that goes as the sun gets higher in the sky.

The box bays have coloured glass at the top - original edwardian and a feature. so fitting anything that covered them would be a shame. You could probably just about fit roller blinds.

@peoplewhoannyyou Environmental consciousness - good fair point. We didn't particularly notice it being cold in the winter though. It's not a particularly cold house despite being old.

That would creep me out, knowing that someone could potentially see in when it's dark but I can't see them.

When I was about 19, I was drying my hair in my parent's hallway mirror and my brother came through the front door and said "Who was that?" I said "Who was what?" and he said there was a guy on the doorstep, peering in through the middle pane of glass (the only pane that wasn't opaque).

My brother ran down the path and shouted at him, the guy jumped onto a moped and sped off, although my brother managed to kick his back wheel.

I realise I'm projecting somewhat Grin but ever since then, I can't stand sitting in a room with the lights on and no blinds, when it's dark outside.

Littleshortcake · 30/04/2020 11:24

We have Roman blinds that we never close and curtains in our bay window we also never close unless it's very sunny and we want to watch a movie (maybe that happens twice a year )

Go for it. I do think shutters or a blind might dress the room but a minimal look can be very fresh and clean. Place plants etc on the windowsills perhaps if you do not want a bare look?

Storm1966 · 30/04/2020 12:17

I don’t have curtains just have a voile window scarf

to not have any curtains?
HariboLectar · 30/04/2020 12:22

Roman blinds on our box bay, although we don't have lovely coloured glass at the top of ours Sad

Perfidy · 30/04/2020 12:25

@Storm1996 but you do have blinds....

It does look a bit bare now I've taken them down but I think that's mostly because they windows need a paint and the curtain rail taken down. Once that's been done and I've got a couple of plants it should look OK.

I used to have the fear of someone looking in - but having the curtains open all the time I haven't had that apart from the first couple of nights. There's a street light that lights up the front garden so that helps.

We have security lights, so if anyone approached we would see them immediately before they got close to the house.

Abraid2 · 30/04/2020 12:29

I hate the light pollution caused by people’s uncovered windows.

RedRed9 · 30/04/2020 12:29

@Storm1966 you obviously have blinds 😂

RedRed9 · 30/04/2020 12:30

I don't have any window coverings and I am not allowed to put any up.
@DDIJ Why are you not allowed?

Sparklesocks · 30/04/2020 12:58

What if you and DH fancy a cheeky sofa fumble Grin
