Can I ask what you do for a living? I’m school admin and I’m able to do most of my job from a laptop but I can’t get my head around how many jobs can be done from home?!

OP posts:

I work for a water company, team leader for one of the back office teams that deals with regulatory "stuff" for escapes from the sewage network, all my team are working for home at the moment (in fact the whole company is except the frontline people who need to be out there) my company has also made a commitment that nobody will be furloughed so that's nice to know.

Social Housing. 95% are at home, exceptions being the ones returning the empty stock and the ones cutting the grass.

AuditAngel · 29/04/2020 23:07

I’m a risk and compliance partner in a national accountancy firm. I regularly work from home anyway

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/04/2020 23:07

Renovating not returning.

Sparklesocks · 29/04/2020 23:08

I’m a Personal Assistant so can do a lot of my job remotely as it’s mainly emails and calendars, however if my boss is in the office in back to back meetings (in a non lockdown context of course!) then it’s easier if I am too if she needs something printed or me to grab her something etc.

CornishTiger · 29/04/2020 23:09

Supported housing. Part seek at home doing support sessions on phone. Rest of week on site.

Husband DWP. Finally hooked up to process from home.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/04/2020 23:11

Governance, compliance and risk manager. I worked from home often before this so only real change is now I'm doing it while not-schooling a 5 yr old and everyone I work with has decided they want video chats now instead of the emails that always worked fine before.

Office manager overseeing a department of usually 150 people bit due to furlough currently its between 50-60. My staff are customer service based and take calls all day or answer email queries from home

Thankfully around 12m ago we moved from traditional phone system to one thats inbuilt to the pc so once we provided people with laptops they can work at home no problem

Marketing manager in Higher Education

I’m an IT manager for a large manufacturer. My entire job can technically be done remotely and I normally work from home often.

butteredbarmbrack · 29/04/2020 23:14

I'm a civil servant in a Whitehall department. In normal times I have a regular work from home day so was already used to the drill.

My team in general does a lot of flexible and remote working and has adapted well to managing everything from home, although those with less reliable internet are definitely finding it more challenging.

PineappleDanish · 29/04/2020 23:15

Freelance writer. Self-employed.

Auldspinster · 29/04/2020 23:16

Back office in a global pensions firm, my work is entirely online so once IT got access sorted I can work completely from home.

CaptainCarp · 29/04/2020 23:17

Engineering sector. All our office staff are working from home. We have headsets & a phone system integrated into the laptops. 1 system that is able to be accessed remotely and Google sheets has had to replace excel.
Somethings are difficult but not insurmountable. Just missing human interaction but considering asking my boss if I can work from home part time even when lockdown is lifted.

CountFosco · 29/04/2020 23:17

I'm a scientist. Senior so desk based.

Popc0rn · 29/04/2020 23:18

I'm not working from home as can't. But a lot of my friends are working from home atm...

  • Accountant.
  • GP using telephone/video appointments (they are shielding so have to stay at home).
  • Hospital doctor (again shielding and doing telephone appointments and admin).
  • Recruitment consultant.
  • Customer service advisor.
  • Business loan manager for a high street bank.
  • Yoga teacher (doing online classes).
  • Counsellor (again with telephone/video appointments).
PersonaNonGarter · 29/04/2020 23:20

Lawyer. WFH is fine as I don’t do court work.

One issue is printing and getting documents signed. This is being managed by someone in the office doing the printing and sending it out. It is a bit sub-optimal but hey.

CatBatCat · 29/04/2020 23:20

Specialist training company. I deal with Data and analysis stuff. The whole company has worked from home long before covid.

PrimalLass · 29/04/2020 23:20

NCParanoia · 29/04/2020 23:21

I'm a voiceover artist with a home studio, so not a huge change for me as I usually wfh anyway. Definitely a downswing in jobs incoming but I had a live recording session today over Zoom and a commercials' buyout extended so still ticking over. Actually quite nice to have DH home and spend more time with our DCs.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 29/04/2020 23:23

Very large multi call center company. Taking, making calls.

Jasharps · 29/04/2020 23:23

Portfolio manager for government organisation.

Often worked at home (whole team is home based but out visiting other government orgs regularly) anyway.

hotstepper4 · 29/04/2020 23:26

I work for a large financial corporation. I'm struggling as I don't have a suitable work space. I'm getting a lot of soreness in my neck and shoulder

coronabeer23 · 29/04/2020 23:26

Work for a charity. We are currently 100% from home and it works brilliantly

Gazelda · 29/04/2020 23:27

Funding bid writer for a charity. WFH suits me in many ways as it is quiet enough to think. However, I miss the buzz of the office where I overhear snippets of the good things our front line team are doing that I can shout about in bids. The people delivering direct service seldom appreciate the impact they make that would help funders to understand how valuable their grants are.
