To ask if you have a posh telephone voice?

I can recall as a child whenever my DM had to make or receive a phonecall from someone who wasn't a close friend or family member she would put on this ridiculous fake, slightly higher pitched posh voice that DB and I would always take the piss out of. She'd always start with 'Oh Hello, I wonder if you could help me?' and end with 'thank you, bye bye'.It was so fake and far removed from her proper voice and I can remember one of my friends saying her mum did it as well and thinking it sounded equally ridiculous.

I really hope I don't sound like that when talking on the phone. Did this used to be a thing or do people still do it?

Lol! My hubby always takes the mickey out of me because I always say "Oh hello" when I have to make a call.

lokoho · 29/04/2020 21:20

I have a complete second accent!

My mother had an RP type accent and so as children we all spoke like her. But then she sent us to inner city comprehensives and that was a complete non starter Grin, so I've got two, both completely authentic, accents. I switch between them in different contexts but it's not 100% under my control. I canter up and down the class hierarchy like a drunken pony.

My second accent definitely comes out when speaking to HMRC, the bank etc. It just gets me a better service. Way of the world.

I have a lovely colleague with a very fancy telephone voice - every so often half way through a phone call it slips. It gives us all a good laugh - her included.

Bertucci · 29/04/2020 21:23

My dh takes the piss out of me because I go the other way.

I am well-spoken and work in the construction industry. He says I 'go all common' when I speak to contractors on work calls.

GinnyStrupac · 29/04/2020 21:27

The Strupac residence. The Lady of the house speaking.

lokoho · 29/04/2020 21:27

I go proper Northern when delivering training.

I think subconsciously I find it more approachable and trustworthy a mode. I think we are trained by people's responses, too.

NeilTheBaby · 29/04/2020 21:29

Yes and I'm aware of it and can't help it. To be honest I hate the way I speak normally so maybe I should pretend I'm always on the 'phone!

Papergirl1968 · 29/04/2020 21:31

I don’t think i have particularly but DM definitely did.
When asked for our address she used to say in what I thought was a very fussy way “we don’t have a number, we have a name.” As a kid I longed for a house number just like everyone else! The only reason we didn’t have a number incidentally was because No 1 was an older house two doors up, and 3, 4, 5 etc were on the opposite side.
Once when I was staying with friends in the USA DM left a message on their answerphone speaking very slowly and clearly, and sounding rather like the queen, “hello, this is papergirl’s mother calling from Eng-land...” (England was definitely said as two separate words). She spoke as if they were Martians rather than Americans.
We come from the Black Country so I fell about laughing when I heard this faux posh accent, while the Americans looked on bewildered.

Springcatkin · 29/04/2020 21:36

According to my dc I have a telephone voice but I think it is more of a work than posh voice. Needless to say they have fits of giggles about my voicemail message Blush

flowerycurtain · 29/04/2020 21:41

My mum does that. I can also tell when it's a gold club crony answering the phone.

She also still answers the phone by saying the 3 digits of the number the house was first given as its phone number in the 1960's!

Alyic · 29/04/2020 21:44

My late MIL had one, it was hilarious, think the queen on laughing gas.

BeNiceToYourSister · 29/04/2020 21:52

I canter up and down the class hierarchy like a drunken pony

I love this! Of my closest friends, two are quite posh and DH says he can always tell if I’m on the phone to one of them as my voice goes up by several social classes and at least an octave Blush

madcatladyforever · 29/04/2020 21:56

Yes I do. I sound like the Queen apparently. My normal accent seems to be magnified on the phone.

lockdownbirthdayhelp · 29/04/2020 21:58

I always sound posh Wink

Toothsil · 29/04/2020 22:05

My mum definitely does. We could always tell whether it was our grandma or one of her friends who had phoned, or someone she didn't know, by the voice. If I ever phone from a withheld number she does a very clipped and posh "hello?"!

Thecatisboss · 29/04/2020 22:10

When I first called DH, his mum answered the phone and told him a very well spoken girl was calling for him. I have a normal southern accent but on the phone I have it admit it does go up a little!

214 · 29/04/2020 22:14

According to my DD I have a special restaurant voice!

Sceptre86 · 29/04/2020 22:15

My mum does and we too always take the mick out of her. She otherwise has quite a broad mancunian accent so it is hilarious. I don't think I do but dh says I go up a class.

FraughtwithGin · 29/04/2020 22:24

I have a "posh" and sexy telephone voice. Go low, go slow etc.
About 35+ years ago I met a friend of a flatmate, who had spoken to me on the 'phone and was very disappointed by the real me, more fool him and I had no interest at the time.
I may very well end up on a sex chatline in the current economic climate, in order to enable my annual income.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/04/2020 22:52

Ive at least three voices, my usual one sounds quite posh but i tend to not use that one with friends...i also have an angry voice which is very calm and much slower than my usual rate of talking

Dd speaks RP all the time...unless she meets someone who sounds posher and then she’s very inner city London ...or rather What she thinks is inner city london

Rose789 · 29/04/2020 23:01

I work in a call centre. My customer service voice is a total other person.
I’m working from home currently and my 5 year old came up when I was on a call I shushed her and indicated to wait 2 minutes. Came off the call and she was like you didn’t sound like mammy why did you have that voice I don’t like it.
On the other side I’ll be talking to hyacinth bucket on the phone “would one please tell me la de da” and they’ll go away to ask their spouse a question or to get a card or document and you can hear them in the background “where’s me fucking card Riiiiiiiccccccky have you got me fucking card you’d better not have been to the pub with it you arsehole” then come back “so sorry for the slight delay my card was stuck amongst all of my £50 notes”

Sparklesocks · 29/04/2020 23:04

Not consciously, but I used to be a Receptionist at a very formal corporate company so honed it then - and I’m still doing it 10 years later! Don’t even notice anymore but DP always makes fun of me because when I book a table at a restaurant I sound completely different.

TheSandman · 29/04/2020 23:23

My normal speaking voice is apparently quite a 'posh voice' - perceived by my Scottish neighbours as middle-classish English though interspersed with a fair smattering of sweary words. When I visit England people assume I'm Scottish because that's what I sound like to them. Same voice, different perceptions. I can slide into a reasonable facsimile of a Glasga accent when I need to. I guess an awfy lot of it is ta dae wi' the rhythms - the way you structure ya sentences and tha' . know wha' I mean, pal?

Caselgarcia · 29/04/2020 23:36

My mum has a silly posh voice answering the phone. I think it stuck from being a secretary years ago. She always answers with her telephone number too e.g Chalfont St Giles 968456. She's the only person I know that still does that!

Meggie2008 · 29/04/2020 23:45

I hate myself on the phone at work, I go all higher pitched and sound like a little girl. I do credit control as part of my job and sometimes it helps as people don't tend to be as arsey to what they think is a wee girl 😂
