Post for traffic working tax credit

So I've recently been furloughed and ill be starting maternity leave in May. I receive child tax credits for being a single parent and child benefit. I just checked my bank and I've received a payment from working tax credit. I'm really confused because I've never had a payment from them before. Can any one shed any light on that in a general way, is it because of covid? Anyone else get an unexpected payment?

Yes, I do get working tax credit but I received an unexpected additional payment today. How many hours do you work?

Delbelleber · 29/04/2020 11:41

Usually about 18 a week.

If you work more than 16 hours a week you should have been getting working tax credit anyway. Have you logged into your government gateway account?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/04/2020 11:44

They may have underpaid you last tax year, payments are often all over the place at this time of year.

Delbelleber · 29/04/2020 11:47

I have been doing these hours almost 5 years! No I've not logged in. I forgot I can do that!

The site is experiencing technical difficulties apparently!

That seems odd. You can claim working tax credits if you work more than 16 hours. You should have been getting them. Have a quick look on the online benefits calculator, I'd be questioning that.

Kaykay066 · 29/04/2020 11:55

Depends how much you earn I think, I didn’t get them as I earned a bit much but then I’ve earned less and getting 60 a month hoping it’s right, waiting for my renewal. I work 18.75 hours,

MozzchopsThirty · 29/04/2020 11:57

I got the same this morning, my regular tax credits went in yesterday

A quick google states that sometimes in April they will assess the previous years claim based on projected earnings and then actual earnings and pay or deduct accordingly

I'm keeping my head down and saying fuck all lol

They often send out one off payments this time of year. I think when they calculate the weekly amount for the coming year they round it to make it the same amount each week, then pay any left over as a one off. Maybe you already got a small amount of WTC but in the same payment as CTC, so didn't notice it until now?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/04/2020 12:01

Yes that's true it does depend on your salary. If you earn too much you might not get them.

oooompa · 29/04/2020 12:05

I just checked my online banking to see two pending payments in for child tax credits. One £30 approx under my usual payment amount, and one £27 over my usual weekly amount 🤔 so in total nearly double my usual weekly payment amount!

OP I hope you don't mind if I use your thread to ask a question to other mumsnetters who might know a bit more about tax credits? I work 17.5 hours per week and DP is full time. From what I understand we should be entitled to working tax credits but my award letter I receive states that we don't get working tax credits but the money awarded is for child tax credits. We do use tax credits to help with childcare costs. We haven't received a renewal pack and it hasn't auto renewed when I log into our government gateway account.

I've no concerns about us getting the correct amount as entitled to and turn2us calculator come back with pretty much the same figure that we get. Any ideas?

Iwantitidontwantit · 29/04/2020 12:13

Op I've just checked and I also got an additional payment today. I did some googling and the govt increased the working tax allowance on 6th April due to covid situation. So maybe you were entitled before but out now because of the increase in limit? Guideline said would be approximately and extra £20 per week.

oooompa · 29/04/2020 12:17

Mystery solved for our extra payment, I just logged onto the gateway portal again and it has been autorenewed.

Still a mystery as to why my award shoes £0 for working tax credits but I'm happy that the figures are right

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 29/04/2020 12:24

My CTC has gone up by exactly £20!per week. Tax credits have confirmed that this will be for one year due to Covid. Its lovely but I feel like a fraud because my income hasn't dropped so now I am better off due to the situation.

MozzchopsThirty · 29/04/2020 12:26

So my child tax credit yesterday was normal
But today working tax credit received for £150 is that to do with covid?

So the extra £20 a week when does that start? Is it based on earnings?
