AIBU to think that an air purifier could help with my allergies?

I frequently come out in hives, have swollen eyes, and generally feel like crap. I avoid high histamine foods, as they seem to aggravate it, but have always suspected that things get a lot worse in wet weather. The recent abrupt weather changes have confirmed this - my hives went away during the lovely warm spell, and have now returned with the rain. So, I am thinking about ways to combat this, and was wondering about an air purifier, or possibly a dehumidifier, as I have had mould allergy issues before. My daughter has a diagnosed dust-mite allergy, so possibly an air purifier could help with that too?

Would I be unreasonable to buy an air purifier, or is it a bunch of hokum? If not hokum, would anyone have any recommendations? (Okay, very tenuous AIBU, but parking isn't a problem on my street, and everyone is following social distancing rules perfectly. There's not a lot for me to work with!)

That kind of confirms my suspicions - the ones I had been looking at were less than £200, but that Which report tends to suggest that those in that price range are likely to be useless. Looks like I would need to spend upwards of £400 to get anything decent - and even then it's not guaranteed.

We got one in hopes that it would help (was not an expensive one) and couldn't really see a difference

I have a vax air purifier and it is brilliant, I have Asthma and am also very allergic to things particularly pollen. I put it on overnight in my bedroom. I'd really recommend it.

Lovemornings · 29/04/2020 20:22

If it is a dust mite allergy (possible since they like humidity, apparently) then you will be better off vacuuming frequently and buying Evolon or similar mattress and pillow protectors since air purifiers blow the mites around the room. If it’s hay fever then air purifiers might be helpful. We use anti-allergy bedding and Dyson air purifiers when pollen gets bad.
Hope you get some relief one way or another! X

We also have a Vax one and it has been amazing for my pollen allergies. But your allergies are obvs different so it's a bit of a risk for such a large spend....

Hi, my DD also has a dust mite allergy. Do you know what your allergies are? For dust mites, i plan to get rid of my carpets as soon as i can afford to and in meantime I vacuum (with a Thomas Hoover. Cheap and best I have ever used). I also spray with eucalyptus oil (a few drops mixed with water) which is anon toxic insecticide. And it has made huge difference. I also replaced fabric sofa for a leather one. Good luck

I also have a Vax one as have hayfever and dust mite allergies .
Haven’t got it down from the loft yet though !

@Rumplestrumpet
Can I ask you what model Vax purifier you have please. I need one for pollen and dust.
I also love near a busy road so am hoping there is one that gets rid of pollution from the cars (although I don’t know if that’s even possible)
Thanks

Certain house plants help to purify the air

Hi @Yellowbutterfly1 I have the Vax Ap01 model: www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Vax/page/3295350C-76DE-433E-B36D-36E7CB532DC1?ref_=ast_bln&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Ds as allergies, don’t know what to as he won’t have a blood test!

I bought the Dyson AM10 £307 from Dyson
I’ve had it 3 weeks now, I personally don’t think it works as he still sneezes most mornings continuously, but then he does take antihistamine every day.

Thanks for the idea, @P999. I've just done that and my lungs feel lovely!

@RonObvious I bought an elecriq air purifier/dehumidifier a while ago for about £150. I think the dehumidifier worked well for a moldy smell, but the jury's out on the air purifier. My flat is abnormally dusty though- I've never known a place like it.

Smells nice now anyway with the eucalyptus!

RonObvious · 30/04/2020 16:01

I think my allergies are more mould related than dust mite (can't get allergy tested here - I was referred, but when they realised it would mean me travelling to a different hospital, they cancelled it. Most odd). So, maybe a dehumidifier is the better way to go. It doesn't sound like there is a common consensus on the efficacy of the air purifiers!
