To be super fed up of hearing about him?

It's not his fault but the media etc seem to be using him to distract us from more important things. He's featured on the news more times than I can count. He received over 125,000 birthday cards - he can't possibly read even a quarter of them, what a waste of money and paper. And poor Royal Mail having to get it all to him.

There's not one day we don't here about him and now he's getting a plane or something flown over his house. The 28million he's raised is stupid money too - yes great for these NHS 'charities' but goodness, they are all on full pay! What about the food banks and million other things we could've all supported.

We've gotten so used to hearing Rishi throw money around I think we've forgotten how much money that is.

Is it just me? I feel awful. I know he's a lovely old man who's served his country all his life and will probably die very happy and yes we all need some lighthearted news but ffs all he did was walk around the garden.

OP posts:

It’s useful to see details of the type of charities this money will support. At the outset, we heard no more than that it was ‘for the NHS’, which is bound to raise questions.

Aridane · 30/04/2020 08:23

I'd be happier if this money had been raised for the families of people that had died.

Why? I don’t really understand the giving of money to the bereaved - would prefer to focus on the ill and the vulnerable

ScarletFever · 30/04/2020 08:35

I've been watching bbc news for an hour, there is nothing except Tom for the last hour!

Yes, hes done an amazing job, well done, but seriously, there must be something else happening....

Chillipeanuts · 30/04/2020 08:45

ScarletFever

I switched over to ITV as soon as they started on about the whole hoo ha, again. (and stuck with it for 2/3 minutes 😁)

Happy birthday, Tom. Salute you and your achievement. The attendant circus is ridiculous.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 30/04/2020 09:07

Off you go then, start fundraising!

teqcar · 30/04/2020 09:18

Eh? This man wanted to raise funds for the NHS, who are you to decide his campaign should be for something else? There are lots of charity fundraising events for various people. Maybe you could start your own for bereaved families, although I'm a bit baffled as to why you think people who have lost a loved one should be put before the chosen charities here given that they are working to save lives.

sixthtimelucky · 30/04/2020 09:22

Very very late to this thread but OP I get you!

No offence to a great guy who has done a great thing, and whoever and whatever raises £30m for the NHS (and raises spirits) is amazing.

But I was literally lol-ing this morning watching the fly past, Bojo's speech, Michale Ball warbling happy birthday! It's like a hilarious spoof!

teqcar · 30/04/2020 09:27

Really Sad

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2020 09:29

A hilarious spoof? What a strange thing to think.

rosie1959 · 30/04/2020 09:30

Fortunately the whole world doesn’t revolve around the opinions of MN
I was watching him this morning a humble gentleman who has done his bit for the country and is doing it again
I enjoyed the fly past what a tribute to a fine human being rather than some keyboard warriors

sixthtimelucky · 30/04/2020 09:31

Yes I was cracking up! It's so over the top.

No ill will to the old chap, it's just like a Peter Kay sketch.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/04/2020 09:31

Yes, hes done an amazing job, well done, but seriously, there must be something else happening

Thats the problem....nothing else is happening and they have to find stuff to fill the 24 hour news

Fantastic achievement 30 million!

Alyic · 30/04/2020 09:32

I think the red arrows should do him a display today for his birthday, then leave the old boy alone to get on with his life. He's done a fantastic job of raising all that money but he must be sick of the fuss now, as are we.

ScarletFever · 30/04/2020 09:33

@Chillipeanuts we just turned it off in the end, fucking ridiculous - i mean, yes its amazing what he's done - well done, but i dont want fucking michael arsing cheesy ball warbling and gurning on my tv thank you! i want NEWS! i want to know what is happening, sure its only going to be misery and corona, but i dont want or need an hour of Cpt Tom, and if i want the fluffy stuff, i'll watch lorraine kelly or loose women or some shit like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MargotB7 · 30/04/2020 09:34

To be super fed up of hearing about him?

No.

More fed up of the winging and boring posts on MN

ScarletFever · 30/04/2020 09:34

nothing else going on the world at all? nothing? no death rates, no lifting of restrictions or otherwise in other countries, nothing at all?

TheyAreDefinitelySwingers · 30/04/2020 09:34

I'm completely fed up of hearing about him, and yes, I do hate myself for feeling like that. I imagine when he passes there will be a state funeral and a huge outpouring of grief like Princess Di. Sadly I think its more of an emotional fever/reaction sweeping the nation rather than feeling for the man himself. Just the next thing to be "part of."

MargotB7 · 30/04/2020 09:37

Whinging

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/04/2020 09:38

nothing else going on the world at all? nothing? no death rates, no lifting of restrictions or otherwise in other countries, nothing at all

Should obviously have worded my post better

I personally think that there is a lot going on still...there must be

I think the news channels think there is nothing happening OR (now ive had to rephrase Grin) want good news items cos they are fed up of talking about testing and attempting to guess when lockdown is going to end

ScarletFever · 30/04/2020 09:38

More fed up of the winging and boring posts on MN and yet here you are

what exactly were you expecting from a thread called Captain Tom in AIBU?

Chillipeanuts · 30/04/2020 09:39

Alyic

I think the red arrows should do him a display today for his birthday, then leave the old boy alone to get on with his life.“

Trouble is, the circus that’s built up around him won’t let him now. Some people want to fill 24 hours of rolling news in a time when there is, apparently, no other news (except on the World Service, yes there is still a world out there!), some people want to keep their own profiles up and I’m cynically certain that there are unscrupulous people out there right now busily dreaming up ways of profiting from his charitable efforts.

I agree, great man, leave him alone now.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/04/2020 09:40

I wouldn’t be annoyed with the constant ‘tom, dressed up postmen, baby, runners in fancy dress, look how clever our neighbours are’ news if I honestly thought there wasnt any world news

teqcar · 30/04/2020 09:44

@Alyic

I think the red arrows should do him a display today for his birthday,

Now that would be a step too far. The BBMF did a fly past with a spitfire and a hurricane. They don't need to send the red arrows along later.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 30/04/2020 09:48

But I was literally lol-ing this morning watching the fly past, Bojo's speech, Michale Ball warbling happy birthday! It's like a hilarious spoof!

Hmm how weird, you're obviously easily amused.

I was watching him this morning a humble gentleman who has done his bit for the country and is doing it again I enjoyed the fly past what a tribute to a fine human being rather than some keyboard warriors

Exactly this!

I loved the fly past, that meant the world to him, I loved his speech from Boris and I love that he's had a special letter from the Queen and he is now Colonel Tom. He is 100 years old today. He is an amazing man.

Amazing. Unlike a bunch of negative, spiteful whingers that have never done anything like he has and never will.

MargotB7 · 30/04/2020 09:52

Well it would have been a bit shit if we hadn't celebrated his 100th Birthday after he'd raised all that money.

To be honest if you are on social media or watching the TV all day then you probably have seen to much of him. Do something else.
