To be super fed up of hearing about him?

It's not his fault but the media etc seem to be using him to distract us from more important things. He's featured on the news more times than I can count. He received over 125,000 birthday cards - he can't possibly read even a quarter of them, what a waste of money and paper. And poor Royal Mail having to get it all to him.

There's not one day we don't here about him and now he's getting a plane or something flown over his house. The 28million he's raised is stupid money too - yes great for these NHS 'charities' but goodness, they are all on full pay! What about the food banks and million other things we could've all supported.

We've gotten so used to hearing Rishi throw money around I think we've forgotten how much money that is.

Is it just me? I feel awful. I know he's a lovely old man who's served his country all his life and will probably die very happy and yes we all need some lighthearted news but ffs all he did was walk around the garden.

Sad
lovinglavidaloca · 29/04/2020 00:06

Mmmm I kind of think YABU.

DaisylovesDonald · 29/04/2020 00:08

I think yanbu, not his fault at all though obviously and he’s probably there going WTAF, I just wanted to raise a bit of money and now they won’t leave me alone!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/04/2020 00:10

hmmm could walk around your garden that many times at his age.

Washyourhands48 · 29/04/2020 00:18

It’s not just you OP. I feel the same and the cards thing is ridiculous.

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 29/04/2020 00:19

I’m inclined to agree with you. I’m not 100% on where the money is going though.

Freddiefox · 29/04/2020 00:20

What about the food banks and million other things we could've all supported.

No one is stopping you.
He’s a man who raised £28 million at the age of 99. He set out to raise £1000.00
People donated their hard earned money. Which shows they value the NHS and the contribution he is making.

It’s not his fault the media are focusing on him. Or Micheal ball decides to jump on his back and make a song. Tom could hardly say no.

He’s being used by the government to try to distract they incompetence, but it’s not his fault.

BackseatCookers · 29/04/2020 00:28

Take a step back.

28 MILLION pounds. Of money that would otherwise have required hundreds of thousands in campaign costs to raise.

Pick your battles.

Cheeseismymiddlename · 29/04/2020 00:28

I have to admit seeing companies dropping off highly bespoke gifts only to post the gift and their company name / logo on FB makes me feel very uncomfortable on his behalf. Shameless advertising. I don’t begrudge the fly past though. Seems more fitting than the twee garden bench and weird jacket upholstered chair he has had foisted upon home.

MMN123 · 29/04/2020 00:28

YABU. And a bit cantankerous.

Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel a bit more PollyAnna about it all ;-)

GlummyMcGlummerson · 29/04/2020 00:29

I'm pleased you said it OP.

Poor Tom has inadvertently been used as a poster boy for the "Keep calm and carry on" aspect of this saga and, as usual, it's getting a bit silly. I mean he's a top chap, we can't deny that, but it's one lovely story in a sea of so many more (people running marathons for charity on their own, setting up food banks for their village etc), but it has all the trappings of a red top's dream 'beacon of hope' story - old man, war veteran, lovely British back story etc.

Poor Tom's probably knackered by now of all the demands. And 125,000 birthday cards is utterly ludicrous, and a waste of resources. I was a bit Hmm about how many virtue signallers, sorry people, on my social media feed had sent him cards. My sister even messaged me in a family group chat telling (not suggesting, actually saying "Make sure you do this") me to make one (love arts and crafts and have a die cutting machine, I handmade family birthday cards). I just replied "lol, no" 🙊

GlummyMcGlummerson · 29/04/2020 00:32

*I make my family handmade birthday cards that should've said (though I often wish I hadn't bothered starting, the fuckers expect it now and frankly half of them don't deserve one Grin)

Jobseeker19 · 29/04/2020 00:33

I feel like no matter how much money could be raised for the NHS somehow it will be broken up and trickle through not having a full effect.
Also if they can arrange a spitfire flyover why cant they go and pick up the PPE that is waiting in other countries.
Gosh, I've become so cynical.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/04/2020 00:35

This is the only good news we seem to be hearing

I think you are being miserable but we all grouchy at the moment

nancy75 · 29/04/2020 00:35

Just think at £2 a card that’s another 1/4 of a million £ that could have gone to good causes, what a bloody stupid waste

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 29/04/2020 00:35

I have found my people (( well some of them ))

Lovely man.

And he's done an amazing thing.

But all of this is distracting us from the fact that people are being badly let down by our shit show of a government.

Oh and Vera Lynn being wheeled out was the final damn straw 🤨

CaptainCabinets · 29/04/2020 00:36

Soooo what’s your contribution in all of this then, OP? Smile

Must be something amazing if you’re in a position to whinge about someone who has raised so much money for charity.

nancy75 · 29/04/2020 00:38

If all the people that cared so much voted for governments that properly funded the NHS over the last 10 years the poor old sod wouldn’t have to drag himself round the garden. Same as the Thursday clappers, should see them all congratulating themselves where I live - in a constituency that’s never been anything but Tory

MadameMeursault · 29/04/2020 00:39

How many of those cards are infected with the virus?

DeeCeeCherry · 29/04/2020 00:41

Soooo what’s your contribution in all of this then, OP?

That's what I was wondering. Sitting on your arse being waspish about someone who's done a good thing is no good OP. You don't have to watch him on TV or wherever you're following his updates. You're not being forced, are you? If you're green because he's getting attention (from you too🙂) you can always do something for charity, volunteer etc whatever floats your boat. Or if that's all too much turn TV to another channel, simple.

MustShowDH · 29/04/2020 00:41

@GlummyMcGlummerson
I'm pleased you said it OP.
Me too.

Yep, he's great, but I wish people were putting just a fraction of the money into smaller local charities where £28 makes a massive difference, let alone £28million.

teqcar · 29/04/2020 00:42

YABU.

Fatasfooook · 29/04/2020 00:44

The NHS isn’t a charity though is it.

TheMagic · 29/04/2020 00:46

The duet with Michael Ball was excruciating. The garden walk was very admirable but it should have been left at that.

Slurryingback · 29/04/2020 00:48

100% agree OP
