I know IABU but it's bugged me for a long time. Which one is 'correct' and which one do you say?

A) Not everybody is going to like you.

Or

B) Everybody is not going to like you.

I would say A..

They are both inelegant and B is positively clunky. More to the point, A means some of the people will dislike you and B means all of the people will dislike you. So which is it that you're trying to convey?

malmi · 28/04/2020 23:42

Not everybody isn't going to not dislike you

Slith · 28/04/2020 23:47

They have different meanings so it depends on what you're trying to say.

A even after update. It feels correct

Bouledeneige · 28/04/2020 23:53

I'd say everyone not everybody. A is fine and I'd never use b). Not everyone is going to agree on what is good grammar however.

A) the negative applies to "Everybody"
B) the negative applies to "like".

So they are just different sentences.
