To wonder What's it like in prison as a category A prisoner child sex offender

The man that abused me and at least 5 others (there will be many more) was convicted as a category A prisoner last year. He got 16 years but can apply for parole after 8. The Judge described him as a serial predatory paedophile (he was convicted of crimes over a 30 year period).

I got an update from the victim liaison officer today (just an annual one) which doesn't tell me much (I'm not allowed to know much). I did wonder (before I opened it) if he had died of coronavirus. He is in his 70's and has cancer. It's left me wondering what life is like for a category A convicted child rapist. I have read that prisoners can have jobs, but wonder if the restrictions are greater for category A. Does anyone know?

@Brownyblonde
I'm afraid I couldn't sleep at night if I had your job of 'protecting' paedophiles.

Keeping order in the whole prison is important, to keep the prisoners safe and to keep the people working there safe. And regardless of what someone has done, murder is murder.

The vulnerable prisoner wing (vp) can also include prisoners who are ex police officers or prison staff. So they can’t really be with the general prison population.
Historical sex offences will result in more older men being locked up... and rightfully so.

Working in a prison changes people undoubtedly. I don’t think it’s possible not to. I suppose it takes a certain type of person to make a career of it. Although many probably feel a bit stuck and are in it for the pension

WTF
There would be a lot easier jobs to do to be ‘in it for the pension’.
Can’t believe the number of people on here undermining brave officers who keep us secure from criminals! How demoralising.

toothfairy73 · 30/04/2020 19:32

@StoneofDestiny I am in awe of prison officers. You are keeping us safer for very little reward. Thank you.

I'm not a Prison Officer!
I couldn't do that job - far too dangerous for me.

I do however think they are greatly undervalued for the work they do - they put their own lives on the line every day, particularly in top security prisons, so people like us can live our life safer.

But yes - Like you, I am grateful to Prison Officers for that

JediJim · 30/04/2020 19:52

Stoneofdestiny - I think you misunderstood me. I meant that there are many long serving officers who have had enough of the job but stay in as they are close to retirement in some cases. The pension is a valid reason for some officers Many people stay in jobs that they don’t always want to do. Many prison officers have commented on how much the job has changed over the last decade. That’s no secret.
And for the record- I have been a Prison Officer!

JediJim · 30/04/2020 19:54

Stoneodestiny - I have worked in a two prisons previously as an officer. So please give me some credit for knowing a little bit about the job.T

I agree - many people in many jobs 'hang on' to get their pension at the end of their career. But nobody would become a Prison Officer 'for the pension'.

I've never worked in a prison, nor could I.

I do however know several Officers in Cat A Prison's. I've seen their injuries and heard their stories. I can see an officer's role in a lower category prison or an Open Prison would be different. The way they view their job is completely professional and under no illusion they are doing a dangerous job.

I'm surprised that some posters are so keen to change this into a thread about prison officers ... Hmm

StoneofDestiny · 01/05/2020 06:33

OP asked about treatment of Cat A prisoners. Some posters thought it appropriate to suggest that Prison Officers become criminal thugs to allow other criminals to punish sex offending prisoners further. Many posters are clarifying that would not happen and should not happen because prison officers are professional civil servants doing a dangerous job to keep order in prison.

crustycrab · 01/05/2020 11:05

Cat C prisons are just as dangerous for staff and prisoners alike, if not more so.
