To be surprised at this email regarding flights for June

Received an email today from Singapore Airlines regarding our honeymoon flights to Vietnam at the end of June, it basically said that our pre-booked seats had been changed. Obviously we expected it to be cancelled but I called them and they said they have changed the seating arrangements to allow for social distancing! They have given us 2 seats with no one next to us, I still think it will be cancelled but I am surprised they are still planning for it to go ahead.

I don't think it really means anything other than planning ahead in case the flight does happen. I'm waiting to travel back home to the UK in July. Emirates have already changed my flight twice. I expect it to be cancelled closer to departure.

Also, is it worth it if the UK implements the 14 day self isolation rule when returning to the UK?

Cantdecidewhich · 27/04/2020 11:26

@Zarawhich that must be awful for you. I wouldn't mind about the self isolation as I work from home, I would be more concerned about being put into quarantine in Vietnam!

Airlines are at risk of going bust. It’s not surprising that they will wait as long as possible before cancelling flights in case there is a chance they can go ahead.

ZaraW · 27/04/2020 11:34

Cantdecidewhich thanks it's stressful I have an elderly very sick relative and there is a high chance I will never see him again.

Singapore and Australia have quarantine on arrival. Will be interesting if this becomes standard procedure for many countries.

Flights are starting out of Luton in May, it's been announced.

Tbey don't know if the slights to Spain etc will go ahead, but are saying that the Hungary, Romania and some Portugal is.

If they do then the football will be back on and we needn't have bothered with a lock down. If they do and in light of major breaches, ignored by the police, I hope people protest their fines.

The immunologists and virologists outside the governments chosen few, are all saying it's madness and calling for it to be recognised that the science never was followed (despite what Chris Whitty and Valance nod along to) and isn't directing this.

I wonder what was said by Boris to Trump and if he's picked up some ideas.

I've had a BA flight cancelled for mid-June - the email indicated that all BA flights were cancelled.

KaptenKrusty · 27/04/2020 11:49

They will keep it going as long as possible - makes more financial sense then just cancelling so far ahead!

Our flight only got cancelled a week before we were due to go to Japan!

The FCO travel advice was to not travel and luckily our insurance covered us if FCO advice was to not go - even if flight was not cancelled ! (Check your insurance)

So we weren’t too worried about it either way!

We have rebooked for later in the year rather than taking a refund as we still want to go!

LimitIsUp · 27/04/2020 12:07

KaptenKrusty - we were going to go to Japan on 28 June. Had really been looking forward to it Sad

KaptenKrusty · 27/04/2020 15:27

We are meant to be there right now :(

@LimitIsUp

So sad! But we are going to go again as soon as it’s possible!!

Are you going to try rebook for another time?

4Smalls · 27/04/2020 15:56

Goodness, was about to book an international flight for mid-July. Really thinking it would be ok to fly by then. Assumed there would be efforts at social distancing with half empty flights etc (which is what's happening at the moment in many places eg internal USA flights).
No?

ZaraW · 27/04/2020 16:18

4Smalls I'm guessing not. I have a back up flight with Emirates for November to the UK in case my July flight gets cancelled. Lots of people I know who travel frequently think restrictions will last until the end of the year or into 2021.

4Smalls · 27/04/2020 23:13

I think the game-changer for flights will be if airlines are able to give pre-flight coronavirus checks before boarding.

DieSchottin93 · 27/04/2020 23:42

I've got a Ryanair flight booked to Tallinn in July and last week they changed the time. I probably won't end up going (it's for a concert and will probably be postponed) but I imagine if they cancel it will more likely be 2-3 weeks beforehand.

Daffodil101 · 27/04/2020 23:45

I suspect they’ll get around paying refunds by social distancing on flights, knowing that people won’t go because they’ll have to quarantine on arrival.

notimagain · 28/04/2020 00:40

Where to start..Aircraft are flying passengers around in some parts of the world ,even in Europe, even in the UK..however it's all route/destination/airline/country specific.

In answer to a couple of comments:

Flights are starting out of Luton in May, it's been announced.

FAIAK mainly by Wizz Air..only on some routes...

the email indicated that all BA flights were cancelled.

No, definitely wrong.....BA continue to operate some flights on some routes... "all" BA flights certainly are not cancelled.

Midsommar · 28/04/2020 07:19

My honeymoon is due to go ahead at the end of June (flights with Jet2). Nothing mentioned about it being cancelled as of yet.
Probably sounds hugely selfish given everything that's been going on but I will be heartbroken if it gets cancelled. The idea of being able to go on a nice holiday is what is getting me through this awful situation.
