Destroyed carpet

Not sure this is the right place for this but I need help!

I am looking for recommendations for a VAX cleaner or anything of the sort that is able to clean the worse stain imaginable, I am panicking.

I was going to rent a rug dr however that's not an option due to the pandemic and I would be looking to purchase off of littlewoods.

Please can you help me Sad

Wasn't the carpet a sand colour? That picture looks like the bleached area has turned alarmingly orange. Be careful with the bleach!

I agree about getting a professional out (when you can).

foxyknoxy30 · 26/04/2020 19:41

My neighbour hired the rug doctor only last week

LesLavandes · 26/04/2020 19:43

Do not scrub carpet.

You can tease lightly with back of a teaspoon but just blot blot blot.

Alsohuman · 26/04/2020 19:51

We've just had to withhold the entirety of our tenant's deposit due to ruined carpets

So the carpets were brand new when the tenant moved in? You don’t get new for old from a tenancy deposit.

SmileyClare · 26/04/2020 19:53

I don't think any amount of teasing with a teaspoon and blotting is going to get out an enormous 3' by 2 foot stain. I don't think you can do it by hand.

I work as a cleaner and have got numerous stains out of carpets by hand- red wine, make up, play doh..I once spent hours trying to get semi permanent hair dye out of one of my client's carpets to no avail. Anything with a dye in is bad news for carpets I think.

TheSandman · 26/04/2020 19:56

Spot test with flash bleach blotted with a baby wipe! There is hope, Thankyou for the bleach suggestion.

Just don't inject it.

Can I say I was really disappointed to find out it was ink. "The worse stain imaginable" had me in full body horror splatter mode. I was expecting zombie puke or something.

Belledan1 · 26/04/2020 19:57

I put washing powder on masacra that fell out my bag and got walked on and crushed on my carpet. i rubbed it in with a bit water. Left it over night then gave it a good scrub. It came up.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 26/04/2020 19:59

@Alsohuman Yes they were new.

MoonlightMistletoe · 26/04/2020 20:01

I've only been here a year, the carpets were not new as when I moved in the LL had them cleaned and I could smell wet dog as they were still slightly damp.

The carpet is a mixture of colours sandy/peachy I'm unsure of the "true colour" however I've just put my torch on my phone to make sure they match the other parts so far so good, and I think abit orangey would blend far better than electric blue! Thankyou for the heads up.

Finally feeling a lot calmer.

Honestly I've checked regarding the rug dr, they are not allowing it at the moment there's a message on the website, not something I'd lie about.

Yes that's my fear my deposit being held so thankfully from the great advice given here things are looking a lot better now.

Happy to be corrected on this, but I thought the principle of betterment only applied it were possible to replace like for like?

As it is not possible to replace a used carpet with another identical size/age/condition carpet, then the next best thing would have to apply which would be a brand new carpet?

MoonlightMistletoe · 26/04/2020 20:05

To clear up the deposit query, before I moved in the LL done an inventory, took pictures of the property to have on record the state and condition of the property, then I pay a deposit, at the end of the tenancy if the property is not left in the same condition, then he has every right to keep my deposit as he has to replace things like a massive blue stain on the carpet.

Yes, but the landlord has to bear some of the cost. Depreciation is, I believe, 10% a year.

SmileyClare · 26/04/2020 20:07

Haha @TheSandman How dark. I was a little disappointed with the mystery worst stain imaginable Grin

I was at least expecting body fluids and an OP requesting help dumping a large package as her husband isn't around. Wink

MoonlightMistletoe · 26/04/2020 20:17

@SmileyClare @TheSandman it's really great to know that there are people here we can trust in case of such circumstances Grin if only the ink was red it may have made things much more entertaining!

I am slowly but surely getting there now. What do you think?

Surely carpets are wear and tear items? I would expect to change carpets in between teneats tbh. I also wouldn't want somebody tiptoeing round and getting in a panic spending hundreds of pounds they didn't have on a carpet cleaner for an accident.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 26/04/2020 20:24

I got biro ink all over a skirt and had tried stain remover etc and washed it about three times when someone told me to try milk - and even though the stain should have been well and truly embedded after all the washing the milk worked!

MoonlightMistletoe · 26/04/2020 20:35

@lockdowncockdown that's true and I agree, but the way the LL sees it is that he's going to have to fork out on something that could have stayed put, it's not just like the carpets gone bobbly from walking on it if I moved out the new tenants would want the landlord to replace it because of something I've done and so that's why there's a deposit in place.

I do tiptoe around I was so upset about it it seems silly because it's a carpet but i make sure everything is how it's supposed to be and I have small children so I'm constantly walking on egg shells incase LL comes for an inspection and wants to evict us or not renew the tenancy.

SmileyClare · 26/04/2020 20:37

That's an impressive effort MoonlightSmile I admire your determination.

ostinato · 26/04/2020 21:26

I got water based wood stain out with a mixture of bicarb and vanish. You need to use a white cloth to avoid transferring the dye from the cloth. I read that WD40 then hoovering works but it didn’t make much difference for us.

Teddypops · 26/04/2020 21:48

The LL would only keep a small part of your deposit.

The carpet will depreciate each year. After about 5 years it will be practically worthless.

Do your best with it and if it doesn't come up own up to your LL. See how long you stay there and how old the carpet is.

It would be less than £100 of your deposit.

MoonlightMistletoe · 26/04/2020 21:52

Thank you all, for the advice and reassurance.

I have managed to get this far, I will see how it looks in the morning and do the process again.

Hopefully it doesn't dry as blue as it did before however I am really happy with the progress so far.

Looks good!

Erictheavocado · 26/04/2020 22:06

Looks as though you're doing a good job OP. FWIW, I have this. I bought direct from VAX as I couldn't find the machine cheaper anywhere else and it came with a free steam cleaner, which I have to my DC as they have more hard floor than me.

wowfudge · 26/04/2020 22:11

Soda water or just fizzy water is really good for bringing stains like ink to the surface after you have blotted up as much as you can. Put some on and let it fizz, then blot with an old towel by standing on it. Repeat as much as needed.
