He's going to give himself food poisoning isn't he?

DBIL bought a huge bag of lovely fresh mussels. Delivered by a local fishmonger earlier this week.

He froze the mussels and has pulled them out of the freezer with the intention of having them for dinner tonight.

AIBU to think that 6 hours on a counter really isnt enough time to safely defrost them and he's likely to give himself, my sister, my mother and their kids the shits?

Yabu - 6 hours sitting out is more than enough time
Yanbu - that's a recipe for disaster and quite frankly a risk in these toilet roll restricted times

I would never consider freezing live mussels. If I buy them from the fishmongers or supermarket counter in a net then I would cook and eat them the same day.

Its important to pick out and discard the dead mussels. Live mussels will open or close their shells. If the shell is open then tap it firmly to see if it starts to close. If it doesn't move, bin it.

You've got that the wrong way round. It's if you let something out/in the fridge for too long that bacteria multiply and it can make you sick. But you can cook something from frozen and it won't cause a problem (unless it was already too old when you froze it).
This is not taking into account the particular problem of mussels not opening.

I defrost meat on the counter through the day and it hasn't hurt me. However with seafood I'd eat it as soon as possible.if we by fish we'll eat that first regardless of dates.

Jimjam- it's easy to undercook frozen food- they can appear cooked on the outside but have frozen pockets inside, leaving parts of the food raw.

I hate mussels- one of my siblings caught food poisoning on two separate occasions from mussels when we were growing up and it's put me off them for life!

CorianderLord · 26/04/2020 18:39

@likethebattle I used to just cook frozen pink prawns straight from the freezer... never had food poisoning because they're already cooked.

I'm veggie now so never have to worry about my aubergines hurting me 😂

Moonshinemisses · 26/04/2020 19:06

You can just cook them straight outta the freezer. As long as they open you're good to go.

Likethebattle · 26/04/2020 19:18

@CorianderLord I am just wary as I had food poisoning once and never want that again.

fruitpastille · 26/04/2020 20:02

I've had food poisoning 3 times from mussels. Never again. I wouldn't eat them if you are in any doubt and believe me I am not someone who is usually bothered by defrosting/dates etc.
