To be considering spending £££ on a fan

FourDecades · 26/04/2020 10:52

Ds1 16yrs, is autistic and spends practically all his time in his bedroom.

He has his curtains firmly shut and puts a towel by the door so no light enters.

He absolutely refuses to have a window open as this causes his curtains to move which let's light in the room.

His room stinks and is so hot. I clean it when he is at college or his Dad's but currently he is going to neither due to the current circumstances.

I have been looking at the Dyson fans that cool and cleanses the air but they are so expensive. However he has a fan on 24/7 anyway so it would be used.

Could l have some opinions and recommendations please.

I looked at an air con unit but they either have a hose to shove out an open window or can cause moisture build up which is already an issue.

Thank you

Could he have a routine where he opens the windows for a set time in the morning? Maybe while in the shower? Or having breakfast? Is there anything in there that adds to the smell? Could you have a daily call for dirty washing that he flings into the basket if you stand in his door?

I appreciate I may be suggesting things that are unachievable or patronising, it’s hard to get the tone right when you don’t know that much about a situation Smile

I don’t think a fan will help with smell or temperature, it’ll just move the air around. It will make it feel cooler for him though, if you’re worried about that rather than the actual temperature.

Hermanfromguesswho · 26/04/2020 12:06

Could you get some sticky back Velcro to hold the curtains to the wall and stop them moving then open the windows??

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2020 12:09

I’m we have the PureCool Dyson, i think it’s called. As a fan, I would say it is comparable to any other fan, but the air purifying but has activated carbon in, which absorbs smells. DH runs it all night, and I don’t notice the sound. Normally I’d wake up at the sound of a butterfly sneezing.

PinkSpring · 26/04/2020 12:40

We have three, the hot and cold, a cool desk and a Pure Desk. All three were stupidly expensive and to be honest, aren't much better than a normal fan. The only reason I get them is because they look good!

The pure version is quite good at absorbing smells and making the air "cleaner" but the filters are £50 and we go through one a year. We never use the hot function on the hot and cold, I find it too noisy and it makes the room smell a bit odd!

Ellmau · 26/04/2020 12:50

Isn't a fan going to make his curtains move?

Could you replace the curtains by blinds?

Ellmau · 26/04/2020 12:51

(And then open the windows behind them.)

FourDecades · 26/04/2020 14:59

Many thanks everyone.

Ds1 has blackout blinds and blackout curtains.

Maybe a bigger fan would be enough as he has it pointed on him directly anyway.

I'm going to google air purifiers too

Absolutely no help or advice, sorry, but I find it strangely comforting at the moment to know that out there, there are people doing the same as us! (sorry that's a bit weird maybe!)

If I'm feeling stressed about something then the noise of a fan helps me feel calmer. As it's white noise I expect that is the case for a lot of people.

StatementKnickers · 26/04/2020 16:52

I'm not a great fan of Dyson products, think they are generally overrated and not worth the £££.

Does DS literally sit in the dark all day?

ShinyMe · 26/04/2020 17:09

There was a period last year when it was ridiculously hot and I was menopausal and having hot flushes too, and it was just unbearable to be in my house, especially at night. I splashed out an on a Dyson fan and have never regretted it, it made life much more bearable and was worth every penny.

EachandEveryone · 26/04/2020 17:19

I’ve just ordered one for the same reason. The flushes.

FourDecades · 26/04/2020 18:09

@StatementKnickers - on his laptop or playing his Switch

I have a dyson fan - it is years old - five or more - and is still going strong, although it is a bit noisier now than it was when new. It is still very quiet - it doesn’t keep me or dh awake.

hennaoj · 26/04/2020 19:47

I have a Meaco Fan air circulator. Much cheaper than a Dyson but very very quiet and powerful.

Kenworthington · 26/04/2020 19:50

We’ve got a dyson fan. It’s shit. The tall basic ones cool the room much better imo

Spiderysummer · 26/04/2020 19:58

I've just ordered a Meaco Fan, has very good reviews but much cheaper than a Dyson.

Fluffybutter · 26/04/2020 20:04

We bought a dyson fan a couple of years ago , it’s good because it’s much quieter but I don’t think it’s amazing , it’s just ok

Hont1986 · 26/04/2020 20:09

I think a separate fan and air purifier would be better. He won't want to use the fan in the winter but running the purifier would still be a good idea.

I have one called the Blue 411 from John Lewis, it seems to work OK. I thought it would get rid of all the dust in the room and it didn't do that but it does leave the room smelling fresher when I get home compared to before it had it.

After that, any old fan will do. I think Lidl are selling a big tower fan thing now/soon for £20.

Shamoo · 26/04/2020 20:38

@Bbang - sorry, only just saw your message. Our Aircon is Arlec -

www.homebase.co.uk/8k-btu-portable-air-conditioner_p499060?gclid=CjwKCAjw4pT1BRBUEiwAm5QuRxW_Dyi2crEkj9UYudBZMezUSd7FBOdVPkuilyWa8NlkBTDtxktAABoC4OcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I did 0 research before I got it on a sweltering night through desperation at my local homebase, so I cant claim that I know it is better than others or anything. But it is good as long as you have a window you can put it through (and block).

StatementKnickers · 27/04/2020 11:15

If your DS is into tech and gaming would he wear a VR headset? Appreciate if he has sensory issues he might find it uncomfortable but it could be worth a try - gaming is going that way anyway. If he was wearing one he wouldn't be able to tell whether the curtains were open or closed so he could have the curtains/windows open when it's warm.

Sorry if it's an idiotic suggestion, just thought maybe it would interest him and it would be cheaper than a Dyson!

FourDecades · 28/04/2020 12:18

Thankyou everyone. All suggestions are gratefully received and none are stupid Flowers.

He has the fan on 24/7 365 days/yr
