To wonder why some people subsidise big employers?

Just read yet another comment akin to "it's only £x, just sort it your self" / " what's the big deal, just order one / it online" etc about lockdown workplace problems. Stuff like laptop headsets or a WiFi dongle because domestic internet speeds can't keep up with work business needs.

I don't understand why there are so many folk willing to subsidize their large corporate employer from taxed salary.

I'm not talking about a one off £1 purchase so you're seen as not being a squeaky wheel when redundancies come.. or if you (say) work in a school where resources are scarce.

I'm talking about ongoing work costs like internet packages being paid for from your salary but not being able to get expenses back.. with large, national huge companies.. why would anyone do that? I genuinely don't understand the mentality.

You can only have your internet paid if you didn’t have internet before. It isn’t that easy to just get stuff paid. I’m not an expert but I think there Is£6 per week home-working allowance

I am a finance director and I don't expect to pay to work. Check your policies, and if needs be get permission before spending, but, beyond a few pens it is fair for workplaces to pay these costs.

Wherever I have worked the MDs have never been shy on getting their claims in.

Because it takes numerous emails and forms to get a response to your request and then another lengthy process to get payment approved. And my experience is you are seen as an annoyance asking to have your work related expenses paid for. This is corporate private healthcare by the way... who are subsidised by both the NHS AND their employees Hmm

And I wouldn’t be surprised if what topcat says is true... that senior management are not shy about getting their own expense claims in.
But it’s a different world for them with free parking and claiming for their executive coaching.

Yes that's a good point, I can't imagine many of the senior managers/director at my place paying for work costs out if their own pocket. Because it eats into their hourly rate/day rate and business costs should come out of company profit (otherwise you're just bumping the dividend payout to the owners out of your salary!)

Interesting point about the paperwork barriers though!
