To ask for toothache cures

Posting here for traffic DH is having terrible toothache, can't get him seen by a dentist over the weekend is there anything I can get over the counter or in the supermarket that would help take the edge off it until Monday?

Nurofen plus or cocodamol for pain. Make turmeric and water into a paste and rub it on gums around teeth. Warm salt water rinses every few hours, I was surprised how much difference this made. Anbesol is a liquid anaesthetic you can get over the counter that you can also apply to the area around tooth.

Sexnotgender · 25/04/2020 16:54

Salt water rinses and painkillers.

mollypuss1 · 25/04/2020 16:58

Clove oil or Orajel

Try not to taste them when you apply as both taste vile but they do numb the area.

Phifedean123 · 25/04/2020 17:00

If you can get hold of some clove oil it really has helped me this week. Just be careful to not get it on your tongue cos it tastes RANK 😩 I'm also using corsodyl mouthwash

MrsKingfisher · 25/04/2020 17:01

Clove oil and Arnica 30c 2 every 2 hours under the tongue my brother has the same issue and it's working for him.

MaryBoBary · 25/04/2020 17:24

Another vote for clove oil

TheRoyallingStones · 25/04/2020 17:33

Another vote for orajel dental gel, the one I got just tastes minty with a hint of clove, it really wasn’t bad and had a good numbing effect almost immediately.

Paracetamol especially if you can get cocodamol

Be aware that even on Monday the dentist may not be able to do very much as dental work is high risk of spreading coronavirus. The advice on my dentists website currently for toothache is to manage pain and that after about four days the nerve dies Confused I got antibiotics from a telephone consultation for a gum infection so hopefully your DH will at least able to speak to a dentist on Monday.

littlealexhorne · 25/04/2020 18:22

Yes all dentists can do is prescribe antibiotics or refer for an extraction at the moment sadly. Hope he manages to find something that helps OP

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 18:45

Ice wrapped in a tea towel held against the jaw is the only way to completely numb it if it's really awful. It only works as long as the ice is held there, but it does give temporary relief.

Caramel78 · 25/04/2020 18:48

Clove oil. It’s a natural anaesthetic and will totally numb the area

CornishPorsche · 25/04/2020 18:56

The only thing I've ever found that touches toothache is Paramol. It's sold in a pharmacy only. Black packet. It's dihydracodeine, and is stronger than co-codamol.

Swilling with salt water (or preferably vodka) helps me too.

Pastaforall · 25/04/2020 18:59

Maximum dosage on painkillers and keep topping up when he can (even if he thinks it’s not as bad). If you have any strong drink like vodka swill with it and sort of hold it over the sore tooth (by tilting his mouth if that makes sense!). It numbs the area and provides a bit of temporary relieve (more if he swallows it afterwards too!)

KnickersandGnomes · 25/04/2020 19:09

Another vote here for Orajet. I got it just in case with my Asda delivery a few weeks ago, mainly because the reviews were very positive.

I also find that Anadin helps with toothache pain for some reason.

Hopefulworker · 25/04/2020 19:51

You can usually get Orajel on amazon too if you’re staying home

Mumto1andthetinybun · 26/04/2020 18:42

Hey thanks guys, I got Orajel from Tesco yesterday following suggestions here and some clove oil arrived today from Amazon. He says the orajel is pretty much taking away the pain, hes been doing saltwater flushes a few times a day too, unfortunately cant get him to try the turmeric (I really want to see if it works as I've never heard of that before).
Will get him to call dentist tomorrow and see how that goes.

I found orajel only lasted a few minutes Sad

I've found alternating dissolvable Cocodamol and ibuprofen all day and a wheat pack on my cheek is the only thing that has helped. But not got rid unfortunately.

Ive had antibiotics but no help and they won't extract mine because it's cracked and not a whole tooth and is not a straight forward extraction.

Hope it eases for him. It's awful Sad
