To wish netflix made it a bit more obvious a film is in foreign language

Even with English substitutes

I am deaf so use subtitles a lot. I do have so hearing so it’s very annoying to start watching a film and then realise it’s in a foreign language.
The lips don’t copy the subtitles and it puts me off.

I just wish it would say “Spanish with English subtitles” or something like that on the synopsis.

I agree, though my reasoning is less genuine. I am learning a foreign language, and would like to browse by language. (Yes More4, looking at you. Gits)

Oooo I’m bu?

Loads of good reasons why you might want to pick a film in a particular language or avoid one with subtitles, YANBU

Nottherealslimshady · 25/04/2020 15:55

Agree, I also use the subtitles but becuase I'm autistic and dont like loud noises, to hear what they're saying I have to turn it up so much that the background music/action noises are too loud. But it's so distracting when the lips dont line up. I also stop watching stuff where the subtitles aren't correct, they mean the same thing but they're different words.

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/04/2020 15:57

Agreed. I am trying to improve my Spanish and Korean and filtering the dubbed vs original versions of shows is difficult. Also actors in Spanish shows talk ridiculously fast compared to actors in Central / South American shows, and so reading subtitles is a horrible experience.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/04/2020 16:01

I agree.
Ive seen some great films which are subtitled, but Id like to know in advance as I really need to be in the mood for them as there's no easy watching whilst doing other things, you need to concentrate.

YANBU

Soubriquet · 25/04/2020 16:03

Yes

I’ve seen some good foreign language films like Pans Labyrinth

Only difference is, I knew it was in Spanish and had mentally prepared for it. When it takes me by surprise it puts me off slightly

A good indicator can be the cast. If you look at the names who star in the film you can usually tell which country they are from. So if you see all Italian names then it is obviously an Italian film and as such it’s bound to have subtitles.

loutypips · 25/04/2020 16:09

One thing you can do, which usually helps is look at the cast names. You can usually see if they are English/Spanish/whatever. Unfortunately it's difficult to tell what is Spanish or South American though!

Yes, I would love if there was an option to filter by original language. I also wish that original language subtitles were offered --- they are for some languages but not all.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/04/2020 16:12

Can we also add to this better balance of sounds within films? I am forever turning up the sound on scenes of dialogue then having to turn it down on chase scenes or fight scenes or action scenes.

Surely it should be someone’s job to realise how inconsistent film volume is

minettechatouette · 25/04/2020 16:13

Also you can tell when you start the programme and then click on the language/subtitle options - for voice over options it will give you eg "English, French, Spanish [original]".

sprinklycupcakes · 25/04/2020 18:42

Yes! I really hate dubbed films. I've also started to check the names of the actors and not bother. Also reading subtitles for a whole film is tedious.
I like a lot of foreign films but maybe once or twice a year. When I've had lots of sleep and can stay off my phone to read the subtitles Blush

BarkandCheese · 25/04/2020 18:48

I absolutely agree. If I just want to veg out with a film I don’t want subtitles. I do the checking the cast and crew names thing too. I also wish they’d have an option to filter by age rating, my DD is 12 and I’d like to be able to filter all films by 12 and under ratings.
