About how long fruit & veg last

... and how you store it.

I have read on several Coronavirus threads that some people who are shopping a few times a week cite fruit & veg going off, or not being able to keep them fresh, as a reason for needing to shop frequently.

At first I hoiked up the old judgy pants and thought ‘stuff and nonsense’ but then thought perhaps I am being U.

What kinds of things do people find go off within a couple of days? Are there any tips mnetters could share for helping fresh produce last longer (especially for those with little fridge & freezer space)? And finally, what do you keep in and out of the fridge - eg do you think carrots should be kept in the fridge or just in the dark, etc.

Genuinely interested and not trying to judge or berate others for doing things differently.

What do you find goes off OP and what are your tips?

Nothing much goes off here (hence the judgy pants) but I am fortunate to have a chest freezer as well as a normal fridge freezer. I also think my fridge must be quite good, the veg drawers seem to tend to let things gradually dry out rather than going mouldy. My fridge is rarely very stocked up either, so the air probably circulates well.

My tips are similar to others here - I keep a keen eye on all fresh stuff and meal plan around what needs using next, or cook a batch of something for the freezer. Some things obviously can just be frozen (berries except strawberries, bananas)

I supplement fresh stuff with tinned/frozen - mainly sweetcorn, tomatoes, peas and the odd tin of fruit.

I buy seasonally as much as possible which I’m sure helps.

Not very exciting I’m afraid. Smile

We're shopping once a week sometimes 8 or 9 days.

2.5kg of baking potatoes - bag hung on back of cupboard door.
1kg of charlotte potatoes - fridge
1kg of carrots - fridge
Large broccoli head - fridge
Spring greens - fridge
Large tub mushrooms - fridge
Spring onions - fridge
2 x cucumbers - fridge
2 x avocados - windowsill
1 x pack baby plum toms - windowsill
1 x pack medium vine toms - windowsill
1 x pack of stir fry veg - fridge
10 x bananas - some green - worktop
1 x bag of easy pealers - worktop
1 x honeydew melon - worktop
2 x tubs of blueberries - fridge
4 x kiwi - worktop
6 x apples - worktop

That's for 5 of us.

I also keep frozen onion, green beans & peas & tinned sweetcorn.

I have found since lockdown the veg & fruit lasts longer from our local asda than it used to! I reckon all the panic buying stripped them of all their rubbish short dated stuff.
I'm going about 1 week between shops but I don't have much fridge space so for the last couple of days our veg is usually tinned.
