AIBU to be concerned that the tyre pressure machine is shut by police at fuel station

Drivers are recommended to check the tyre pressure once a month. I do it regularly at the same local fuel station. I need the car for work.
Today I went to that place to check my tyre pressure and the machine is not working.
I asked a member of staff at the door and he told me that the police told them to shut the machine as it is not essential.
I am shocked. The safety of drivers is not essential? Lots of people have to drive where I live as public transport is not very good. Two other fuel stations nearby don't have those machines.
Am I being unreasonable that it is wrong to do that by the police?
Where shall I complain?

My car came with a little portable inflator. It looks like a crappy thing but works really well. We get most of our car related stuff from Euro Car Parts.

You should have a gauge in your car that can do this check. It’s the size of a pen. If you don’t have one, but one.

The bigger concern is that the testing machine is generally the same machine that provides fills and that is essential.

I can honestly only remember checking my tyre pressure once in the past 10 years. If it looks low, I fill it up.

Wow. I bet you're proud of yourself.

I think the petrol station is spouting nonsense and using it as an excuse not to fix their equipment.

My car is over ten years old and has a Tyre pressure sensor. Even still, I check mine myself.

They're talking shite op. I have a garage with one we will not be shutting it down, it is encouraged to maintain your car so why would we?
Go to a better garage.

For goodness sake, buy one. The advice says you should check your tyre pressure, not that the garage should have a piece of equipment to do it. I am old enough to recall when garages didn't have such things, and everyone did it at home. A simple manual gauge costs less than a fiver! And actually, for safety reasons you should have one in your car anyway - if you notice that the tyre looks a bit odd you should check it anyway, whether or not it's "that time of the month"!

What absolute nonsense the police have shut it down. Go to a different garage.

Our local ASDA garage has a working one (used it yesterday)
