Have you ever had a calling from God?

My neighbour is an accountant. He is 33, married to a lovely woman and has no children. They are both very Christian and regularly talk about God in everyday conversation ie. when they got married they could feel God’s presence etc.

He has recently had a calling from God to try a long held dream to become a singer. He says he has felt God leading him down this path and can no longer refuse him.

This is all great but what does a calling from God actually involve? What’s the difference between that and just deciding you fancy a career change? As a non Christian this is not something I have ever experienced but interested to find out.

I think it’s just people basically creating a reason for why they are about to do something batshit.

NotYourHolidayDick · 24/04/2020 19:20

Tunnocks I love you Grin

I’m waiting for mine.

Pinkarsedfly · 24/04/2020 19:23

Yeah, Tunnocks you rarely hear of someone getting a calling from God to become an IT systems analyst, do you?

Toilenstripes · 24/04/2020 19:23

It’s a way to pardon your own ego.

Wanderlust21 · 24/04/2020 19:24

I believe in god. I dont believe in using him as an excuse for my balf cooked plans and life decisions though xD sorry but they just sound a bit batty.

Abbccc · 24/04/2020 19:25

Well, a calling would be God asking you to do something. If you've decided you fancy a change then that's your own decision / "calling".

ChoppingBlock · 24/04/2020 19:25

Yup, just validating themselves to themselves/others.

I feel a calling to eat the contents of my fridge, not sure if that counts?

Grobagsforever · 24/04/2020 19:26

Yes, he told me to inject myself with Dettol to cure Covid 19.

Stinkycatbreath · 24/04/2020 19:27

Ah thats not so nice, OP was asking a question and its not so good to belittle people's religion. Ive never had anything by way of a call but my husband has and explains it like something he can't refuse. In another eight months he will be innhis first post as a curate in the Church so please dont be so mean.

SummerHouse · 24/04/2020 19:29

No but does anyone think there's something suspicious about lockdown coinciding with the best weather we have ever had in April. Strange no?
(God told me to mention this)

I became a Christian in my early 20s and looking back can certainly see times God was calling me to church before that, just took me a while to realise! I also felt God’s calling when I saw my current job (a move to NFP sector) it was clearly the path He wanted me to take.

Even people who don’t have faith speak about intuition, getting a ‘feeling’ from the universe - which I would call God speaking to them but they don’t interpret it that way.

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/04/2020 19:31

Sorry to add for your last question - sometimes it can be a clear answer to a specific prayer, sometimes it pops up unexpectedly. I think we’re hardwired to reject things like this coming to us, so we can definitely practice hearing God’s voice and letting Him in

SignOnTheWindow · 24/04/2020 19:32

I think that for some people, a deep-seated feeling that something is the right thing to do constitutes a message from god. Some people may be contemplating an action and then see, e.g. a natural phenomenon such as a rainbow and interpret that as a sign from god. Others may have a dream. And so on and so on.

As an atheist, I just have a 'gut feeling' that something's the right thing to do, even if I can't entirely unpick my reasons for thinking that way.

@BuffaloCauliflower My Christian friend and I have had discussions in which we've concluded the same.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 24/04/2020 19:36

Yes, I have quite a few times and it was right every time

joystir59 · 24/04/2020 19:37

I've had a calling from God. It involves love without conditions. It is love without conditions. A life work I'm not up to.

No Grin

I suspect your neighbour is a tit.

That's a little bit cynical! The drive to lead a fulfilling life seems common to atheists and believers alike and isn't necessarily a selfish or egotistical aim. It's just that believers might call this fulfilling god's purpose for them.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 24/04/2020 19:40

@joystir59

Awesome! Smile

LilQueenie · 24/04/2020 19:45

its when you feel deep within yourself the need to follow a certain path. It doesn't need to come from God but it will mentioned if you are certain faiths.

PerfidiousAlbion · 24/04/2020 19:45

Ive heard of it (I come from a religious background but I’m atheist).

A calling is normally something worthy and for the greater good, so for instance, clergy, doctor, philanthropist, charity worker, aid worker, etc.. I cant really see a singing career being for the greater good. How will that help people?
