Is Trump smart or does his stupidity just play well?

DH reckons that, although Donnie Dumptruck is in most ways thick as mince, he has a smartness for how he gets a response from people, that he knows what he's doing when he tweets some aggressive idiocy.

I think he is not intelligent in any way - eg he's not thinking 'If I blame other people for messes I created, that will take attention away from me', which is what DH suggests. I think he is so moronic and childish that he genuinely doesn't believe anything bad is his fault

AIBU for thinking he doesn't know what he's doing, it just happens to play well with people who think Trump represents a successful, smart person? Or is he actually calculating the effects of what he says?

I don’t think he is stupid no, because let’s face it, stupid people wouldn’t get to where he is.

However I do wonder if he is suffering from dementia or something now, and I do believe his behaviour is becoming exaggerated. I think there is an issue there.

BillywilliamV · 25/04/2020 08:22

Well, he has no idea what a virus is. I think he 's imagining the little snarly monsters that lurk under the rim in Domestos commercials.

notagaincharlie · 25/04/2020 08:25

I thought this was a really interesting write up of what the Brits think of Trump. Well written and pretty accurate

longwayoff · 25/04/2020 08:26

I'll be glad to toast him with a glass of Domestos. After you, Mr President, leaders first.

Lou670 · 25/04/2020 08:29

They have mentioned dementia, haven't they?

SkippyDies · 25/04/2020 08:35

Whenever he says something idiotic or outrageous my first thought now is ‘what is he trying to divert our attention away from’.

We fall for it every time. My FB, Twitter and WhatsApp feeds are full of Trump/Disinfectant memes right now.

What are we not looking at instead? Immigration ban or something else?

He (and more importantly the team supporting him) aren’t as idiotic if as we would like to believe.

Lou670 · 25/04/2020 08:42

@SkippyDies. Totally agree.

Casino218 · 25/04/2020 08:51

I think people are desperately trying to find ways that an absolute moronic idiot has made it to president of the United States of America. It's so unbelievable that they try to justify it. 'He's skilled in this, he has an amazing gift for that' No. He is a moron.

BoingBoingyBoing · 25/04/2020 08:53

He can barely read and he thinks injecting bleach is a good idea.

This is not a matter for debate.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/04/2020 09:08

Americans would vote Ronald McDonald or a billygoat as president if he said/bleated the right phrases over and over again.

DippyAvocado · 25/04/2020 09:08

It's bizarre that you can go from Obama, an incredibly intelligent and articulate leader, to Trump.

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 09:26

He knows how to appeal to the less discerning. The big thing about "blocking immigration* to save jobs for Americans is a vote winner even though it will make neglible difference to the Average Joe in the street.

Lou670 · 25/04/2020 09:28

Ok, read the link. He has not being diagnosed. I have borderline personality disorder, OCD, and eating disorder.

My point is I am not running the USA.

Longtalljosie · 25/04/2020 09:33

It’s the Republican Party I am angry with. They are leaving the US in the hands of someone criminally dangerous just to cling to power. They could nominate someone else but that would split the vote and they might lose. So they put forward this creature.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/04/2020 09:33

Did anyone see - what was it called, the sitcom about the real estate family in the US and the dad goes to jail (the Bluths?). Anyway the daughter is trying to get supports at a rally and is getting desperate as the crowd hate her so she starts yelling ‘build a wall!’ as a crazy way to get attention - and the audience lapped it up. It was a comedy!

Seaweed42 · 25/04/2020 09:37

The people who follow Trump don't listen to his words. To them he is their Dad and they are the kid. Its like a cult or a religion. The Followers won't hear a bad word against him.

I've read your link, and while three of its points are sound, I love that one of them is effectively 'The behaviour of the President of the United States should not be attributed to dementia because that is unfair to people with diagnosed dementia".

TheVanguardSix · 25/04/2020 09:39

It seems so weird, to look back and remember hoping that John McCain wouldn't win an election. If only someone of his calibre was in the White House now.

Amen, with bells on! I remember that feeling same thing exactly! Holy crap, who could have predicted how pear-shaped it would all go? And I thought Dubya was as bad as it could get. It's shocking. It's all gone rogue in the States.
John McCain had integrity.

TheVanguardSix · 25/04/2020 09:41

Sorry! I was writing this with kids asking for food and talking in my ear! My sentence structure's a bit muddled there. What I meant to write was, "I remember feeling that same thing/sentiment exactly."

WineLover1234 · 25/04/2020 09:42

I agree with OP. There's a link missing there somewhere... I genuinely don't think he realises what he says is absolute crap!

Lou670 · 25/04/2020 09:43

@raviolidreaming. Exactly. Undiagnosed at this point.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/04/2020 09:46

I’m not certain - he’s always been a sneer bully witty a massive ego and aspirations above his IQ. He dad wasn’t a peach either... what was his mum thinking?

Lordfrontpaw · 25/04/2020 09:47

sneer bully witty - haha sneery bully with

raviolidreaming · 25/04/2020 09:48

  • and it's probably the most sound point of the 4 Wink
