I trained as a teacher as ' i wanted to help people.' To be honest i couldn't cope with it. Then my mum died of cancer so i wanted 'to help people' and am now retraining to be a radiographer.
Now this global pandemic has hit i feel i could be doing an office job, earning more money and being less stressed out.....

I guess it depends on whether money, or a feeling you are helping others / being useful is more important to you.

The best reason for doing a job is that you love doing what you are doing and go to work every day with enthusiasm. Do something you are good at

Office jobs can be bloody stressful!!

DeborahAnnabelToo · 23/04/2020 15:59

I used to think this too. Retrained as a HCP but got burnt out quickly. Being able to help people requires very high levels of resilience and the ability to apply strong boundaries. If you don't have that you risk doing more harm than good both to people you are "helping" and yourself. Empathy and good people skills, I have in spades but not so much resilience, so I got out.

If you think a job which is lower key and office based would suit you better, you should do it.

I used to work in an 'office job' that was fairly high pressure and reasonably well paid. I'm now going an 'office job' that is incredibly easy and very badly paid. So office jobs vary wildly in both pay and stress levels.

Do you think you could get an office job that pays more than a radiographer and is less stressful?

Office job is a very wide term compared to radiographer. Even before this pandemic, as a HCP your job security was pretty good. How do you think you’d cope with the lack of job security that comes with many “office jobs”?

Mine is stressful, btw.

Sometimes, people bring stress into their job. I would work on what the stresses are and how you manage them, before jumping ship again.
