Uni Halls

We just got the bill today for DD's halls at Uni. It is extremely unlikely that she will be back there. AIBU to think we shouldn't have to pay for this term as she can't be there?
Posting here for traffic really - what are others doing?

I think some universities have allowed their students to surrender their tenancy for the summer term, but that there is a deadline to doing that. Have you checked this or just left it hoping to not be billed?

My sons uni gave them until the 4th of April to decide if they were staying or leaving. Those who returned home haven't got to pay the last lot of fees but they had to reply by email to state they were leaving

You need to contact her university as every one is doing things differently.

Most university run halls are allowing students to break their contract and not pay this term's rent as the universities have been closed under mandatory order which includes their accommodation.

If it is privately run halls then technically any break in contract is a goodwill gesture as students signed a contract for the accommodation and so are still liable, but if you contact them they are usually willing to come to an agreement.

Some are waiving fees provided that they have vacated their rooms and left it empty.

If however they have left their belongings in their room, some universities are giving students a grace period to collect their things without being charged, but if they do not collect their belongings by the deadline then they will be charged, which I think is fair - the universities do not have any obligation to be free storage indefinitely.

My DC got an email saying the last 2 months would be waived as long as they confirmed they were surrendering the flat and removed belongings
Which was done
I thought that was very fair
We pay the hall fees and will give rhythm money for a holiday / traveling as soon as that is possible

My DD surrendered the final term tenancy. They will let her pay weekly for any of the summer term that she returns for. Uni is finished until September but she has a PT job in a shop that she wants to return to.

Movinghouse2015 · 23/04/2020 07:04

My DC also had to complete a quick form to say he won't return for the summer term, it was straight forward.

Is it uni halls? Or privately owned? From what I've read it's not as straight forward for those in privately owned halls.

BlueSuffragette · 23/04/2020 07:13

My DD halls are privately owned. They've been really good and fair.

Crazyhouse123 · 23/04/2020 07:15

My DD has until the 27th April to surrender her halls tenancy for the final term, which she has done.
She is not allowed to go and collect her belongings though as it is not being classed as "essential' by the university. We think this is to stop an influx of students this weekend which is fair enough!
She is going to email them and find out what she can do about collecting her stuff as in the rush to get home there are books and stuff she needs, plus spare meds.

DD1's uni is waiving rent for summer term and is allowing her belongings to stay until lockdown is lifted far enough - at that point they will plan collection. DD1 already has accommodation arranged for September off campus so will be paying for that regardless, but it makes life easier for her financially.

peoplewhoannoyyou · 23/04/2020 08:16

It depends on you contract and whether they are willing to cancel it. Ask them. If not, the bill needs to be paid - I assume they can still get this term's student loan to help pay for the accommodation?

Toomuchtrouble4me · 24/04/2020 23:47

Privately owned halls - we left it to see what would happen. Didn't know if she'd be back, havent heard anything, i'll email now - typical of me to ignore it.Oh well, thanks all.
