Can 6 year olds get ganglion cysts?

I don't know what to do with the situation right now. Are doctors seeing people for non urgent things?

My daughter is 6.5 and came up to me earlier to show me the lump on the back of her hand. Very tiny, but very hard. Only on the one hand. Says it doesn't hurt. A quick Google said ganglion cyst?

Would you wait it out or does it need to be investigated?

Had the things since I was 14/15 - most disappear after a few months.

The diagnostic the consultant used for the first one was to switch the lights off and shine a bright torch against it - it glowed, which he said showed it was a cyst. The normal method these days is to scan it - they show up as a black circle. But that's unlikely to be a priority appointment.

I've had it walloped once under anaesthesia and excised once when it immediately came back again. I then spent many years without one, other than a possible ache occasionally. These days, it comes back every so often, hurts like a bastard for a few days, gets to about half an inch across/up and then goes again for another 6-12 months - mine's in the dip of my wrist, so can get to large marble size, which it why it hurts.

I had one of these for years on my knuckle. If it's not hurting her then leave it until the lockdown is over as it's nothing urgent. I had mine removed under local anesthetic in the end but it was there for at least 3 years before the operation.
The old remedy was to hit it with the family Bible but I'd recommend the more up to date solution 😊

My dd has had a very tiny one on her little finger since birth .
Never bothered her and it’s barely noticeable.
Gp said she could have removed but it’s not even worth it to put her through that

AmyFl · 22/04/2020 21:14

My DC had one at a few months of age, confirmed by a GP.

Hoolajerry · 22/04/2020 21:16

I had one between the joint of mt thumb and my wrist when I was a child. It went away when I was about 10 but before it did it ached a lot and then disappeared.

Leaannb · 22/04/2020 21:18

They disappear. I wouldn't go to the GP unless where ot is located os causing her pain. Not much they can do for it

Emcont · 22/04/2020 21:23

Is that what it sounds like then? Obviously don't want to bother the gp if not needed!

I pushed it down while feeling it and it did go for a while, but she said it hurt. Then it came back a while later 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sounds like it - that's what mine do. Obviously, this is no substitute for a medical professional diagnosing it, but I wouldn't be losing sleep over it in the interim period until you can get a routine appointment.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 22/04/2020 21:43

I had one for many years, the doctors refused to remove it because it was just a cosmetically thing and the very high likelihood it would grow back.

I managed to finally get it extracted after 5-6 years, when it grew so big it looked like a bone protruding off my hand and just because it was causing me problems to cycle which in turn made me put a huge amount of weight.

It took 10 minutes to remove with a syringe (they are gel but almost as hard as a rubber ball so don’t be tempted as me to do it yourself), an injection of steroids and a lot of praying it won’t return.

It hasn’t but I really can say this is not the sort of thing you want to bother the GP with during this time, they won’t do much about it unless they are dead bored due to people staying at home.

Hit it with a bible Wink
Only joking.

Mumdiva99 · 22/04/2020 22:02

I would leave it alone unless it causes pain. I have a small one on my thumb joint....caused by scrolling through mum's net too much!! It grows and gets smaller. This might interest you...

MaidofKent78 · 22/04/2020 22:05

My 4 year old had one on the back of his hand last year. The GP said to leave it alone unless it started hurting or grew more. It disappeared a few months later.

Notimeforaname · 22/04/2020 22:08

Ugh I hate them. Mine is hurting so bad right now.
Have had it on and off for about 10 years. At the base on my index finger, palm side.
I sometimes forget and use that hand to open a door 😩 nothing to worry about though.
They do disappear after a while....but the bastards always come back

BilboBercow · 22/04/2020 22:08

I had one on my wrist years ago and the dr wouldn't remove it but genuinely told me if I wanted I could whack it with a book. My dad did, it hurt like fuck so wouldn't recommend for a 6 year old but it never came back.

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 22/04/2020 22:33

I had one for years on the back of my wrist. Never bashed it with a bible, but did keep applying pressure when I thought of it. Eventually disappeared and has never come back, probably over 10 years now. Now my wrist is elegant and dainty and I can sip tea insouciantly again

Lonecatwithkitten · 22/04/2020 22:42

I have had one on left wrist for nearly 10 years it goes up and down occasionally aches. It has been examined by a hand surgeon when he was doing my carpal tunnel he advised leaving well alone.
