To go next door and punchworkmen

House next door (semi detached was up for sale and empty for 3 years) has sold but is needing extensive renovation. AIBU to feel irritated at the horrendous noise whilst I can't go out and we are working from home with conferences online etc. Think all day drilling as they strip all the walls, rip out kitchen etc. I know it has to be done. I appreciate the new owner will want to get in asap but ffs. They called in to oversee yesterday and don't know us obviously, I could have a sick child and a wee note to say how long this will take would have been nice in the interests of good future relationships with your neighbours. Quite prepared to concede that I am BU and oversensitive to the noise but it is sooo loud, like they are coming through my bederoom wall and I can't watch tv. It's been a week so far. Is this really needing to be done now or can I go in and punch them (lighthearted obviously)

@MashedSpud those two things might be true but it doesn't make your first post correct.

Some builders have stopped work if the can't social distance on site. Others can't get materials. That doesn't mean they legally can't work.

Some employers issued letters to essential workers when certain police forces were overstepping the mark and enforcing rules made up in their own heads rather than what the law actually says. Thankfully that nonsense seems to have stopped now.

I know, insulting others is always the best way to win an argument when you have nothing better to say Smile

Tomorrowisanewday · 22/04/2020 14:59

If @MashedSpud is in Scotland, she is correct. The provisions put in place here relating to construction are much stricter. Only works which relate to facilities connected to treatment of the virus, essential public services and repair and maintenance of critical infrastructure can carry on.

I work in construction, and all the sites I'm involved with have been closed.

I feel your pain, my neighbours are having a huge extension which has been going on for almost a year now. I have to say I was dreading this whole lockdown of not being able to use our garden along with all the noise but they have now stopped working since the official lockdown.

TheHumanSatsuma · 22/04/2020 15:22

We have an overflowing skip in the front garden of the semi next to us.
it’s full of garden rubbish, rotting chipboard and remains of workmen’s lunches. It stinks, can’t have the windows open on that side the smell even permeates the bedroom now.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 22/04/2020 15:25

Phone the Environmental Health dept of your Council, Satsuma and tell them you have seen a rat and that there is a food source (the skip). They should still deal with that.

This is a subject that comes up again and again in various guises. IMO YANBU to be annoyed with constant noise for an extended time, especially when we have been told to stay at home. On the other side, people often have need to carry out rennovations, whether essential, or simply to spruce up their property. I think there is a bit of an equilibrium to be sought here. Neither of you are wrong. Maybe they should seek to limit the loud work to a certain time period, and make considerations that your average person is at home without any escape. But likewise, people do work, and sometimes it makes a noise, and people need to be tolerant of this to a degree as otherwise houses would never get built, roads would never be repaired, water pipes would be left to leak etc.

A bit of consideration on both sides is needed.

TriangleBingoBongo · 22/04/2020 15:32

OP my neighbour is playing their music so loud my brain is rattling in my head. I totally get this. It’s obvious everyone is confined to their homes at the moment and taking the comfort from someone away is bloody selfish.

EthelMerman · 22/04/2020 15:35

Our new next door neighbour is champing at the bit to get building works underway, lots of renovations needed as previous owner badly neglected the property. Am dreading the noise and dust. We need to have a shared wall underpinned so I can’t just ignore it. He’s saying builder[s?] will arrive next week. I am working from home and our house isn’t huge so we can’t escape the noise. May need Gin, lots of it

TiggerOfThigh · 22/04/2020 15:45

Not RTFT but OMG I’m with you. Neighbours have put a side and front extension on, power tools from 8am-9pm...I’m trying to work from home, and suffer terribly with migraines. I’m murderous

SarahInAccounts · 22/04/2020 16:01

@CtrlU

U ok hun?

Hi all. We've deleted some posts that were part of a spat and some of which contained personal attacks. Please do try to post (quietly) within the guidelines from now on. Ta in advance.

HyacynthBucket · 22/04/2020 16:09

Sympathies, OP, that must be awful. Can you find out who the owner is and contact them, explaining your difficulties with trying to work at home, etc. and ask if the work could possibly be postponed until lockdown is over? It may not be successful, but at least whoever owns the house will know that their work is affecting you, and may take more care from now on (possibly!).

LakieLady · 22/04/2020 16:13

They are building flats by my home and work halted three weeks ago

They are building houses opposite my office and haven't stopped since lockdown started.

They've taken advantage of the fact that there are very few staff in to park their vans etc in our car park.

Lou670 · 22/04/2020 16:29

I wish to god I had the worries you have. I am worried to hell right now. Daughter a nurse on the frontline, elderly mother living over 300 miles from me. You are moaning about building work? Seriously? Maybe they are carrying on as they need the money to support their family, at this time???

derxa · 22/04/2020 16:31

We had a leak that needed repairing, he was more than happy to do the work. Things still need to be done. Same. DH shut himself in the office while the work was done. Would people prefer that we had a flooded house? I'm a farmer. We have people come in all the time. Vets, farrier, feed delivery people. We have a ram who broke his leg. I had to hold the ram while the vet put on the plaster. We weren't 2m away from each other.
I know it's annoying OP but some work can't be put off.

peppermintcapsules · 22/04/2020 16:32

Sorry but I think YABU. Best they get it over with as quickly as possible. As for the comments about the plumber, plumbing issues still occur during pandemics.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/04/2020 16:38

My neighbour is building a sun room, banging drilling all week.
DS has ASD he is terrified of loud noises our back garden has been off limits all week.
As long as they don't complain of my trampoline I'll ignore their building work and yappy dog.

eveoha · 22/04/2020 17:02

I understand noise made by people in the building trade needing to earn a living - but surely neighbours doing unnecessary DIY should be sensitive and considerate - a lot of people are under a great deal of stress at the moment - we’ve had DIY related noise almost every day since schools closed - request to desist disregarded so will need to resort to legal remedy - as I would suggest other similarly affected people do.
