To move in with my parents during lockdown?

I am prepared to be told I am BU but don't know how to move forward with this so am looking for some friendly advice.

Myself and DH live in a ground floor flat with one neighbour living above us. The neighbour moved into the flat just over a month ago and we have had non stop issues with noise. He constantly has people round and completely ignores the lockdown and social distancing rules. There is constant loud music that carries on well into the early hours of the morning and there is people in and out of the flat all the time.

The sound proofing between our flats is awful so we can hear the stomping up and down the stairs and music really loudly. I have barely slept for nearly 3 weeks now. Came home from our walk earlier to find him in our front garden (that we own so isn't even his garden) with his mates having beers and really loud music blaring. Asked them to leave our garden and keep the noise down (again) but they just don't care. They have moved upstairs now but the music is still going.

DH and I are both WFH full time and it is a nightmare trying to concentrate. We are in the process of selling our flat but this has obviously all been out on hold. I'm feeling down about this anyway as we are now stuck here for the foreseeable future. I also want to avoid making complaints etc due to then having to declare these as part of the sale.

I was on the phone to my mum earlier and she said we could move in with her if we are really desperate but would have to self isolate away from them in the house for 14 days which we would be willing to do.

Obviously I know that the rules mean we shouldn't even consider this and should stay put but I just don't know if I can put up with this any longer. Please tell me if this is a bad idea?

If it's affecting your mental health and you feel it's safe and practical I don't see an issue .

Thehop · 21/04/2020 22:59

I’d go.

Candlesky · 21/04/2020 23:06

Thank you. I've talked myself into going so just wanted someone to say it wasn't a completely bad idea

100% go. I'm living separately from my Mum (we lost Dad three years ago) at the moment but we've both said if we feel our mental health needs the company, either I'll pack my cats and go to her or she will come and stay with me for the rest of lockdown.

And we don't have noise issues - if my neighbours were causing me issues I'd be off to hers like a shot! Definitely not BU.

@undercoveraessedai If it's done sensibly then I don't see any harm. It's definitely a testing time for mental health.

I'd already be packing

I moved in with my parents at the beginning of lockdown. Given you can move in with a friend to cool down after an arguement I dont see how this is much different.

Rockchick1984 · 21/04/2020 23:28

I'd go. I would also report the neighbour to the police for breaching lockdown rules, and if they are renting then I'd report them to the landlord or management company.

JigsawsAreCool · 21/04/2020 23:30

You can move home. Do it sounds hellish.

Candlesky · 21/04/2020 23:37

@Rockchick1984 left some messages for the landlord as haven't been able to get hold of them yet. Am going to get in touch with the police tomorrow aswell.

Thanks everyone

I'd go, neighbours are putting you at risk. Parents are being sensible about it. I'd go tonight so you can get some sleep.

Annarosez · 22/04/2020 00:34

You're allowed to move homes as long as the period of time you spend in someone else's home is 'counted in days or weeks'. It's probably worth considering whether your parents are vulnerable or whether there are any other factors to consider but I imagine you already have!
