Re washing reusable mask

I was planning to hand wash mine. Heard someone say today that it has to be 60 degrees?
But I’ve also read that soap and water kill viruses
Is anyone in the know?
Thanks

Why bother? They're pointless anyway.

Mummyrowland · 20/04/2020 22:24

What's the mask made of? This will mean a lot re the washing techniques.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 20/04/2020 22:35

I'd hot wash at 60 if it can stand it.

Niceweather22 · 20/04/2020 22:38

I think it’s polyurethane

Re whether to use a mask or not, I gather from what I’ve read that if everyone wears one we protect everyone else( rather than just protecting ourselves)

If everyone wears a mask transmission will be drastically reduced

I think I had CV and was at home for 4 weeks, not stepped outside at all. Went out for the first time last week and didn't wear a mask because the advice has been that they're not effective. However, I noticed people were more wary of those that didn't wear a mask, so will wear one next time.

TreeTopTim · 20/04/2020 22:44

Masks are for stopping you passing it on to others they are not to stop you getting it. They only work if they fit properly and if they are taken off properly. They need to be washed at 60 or higher.

SharonasCorona · 20/04/2020 22:46

@TreeTopTim there are differing views on whether masks stop you getting the virus. Nothing has been proved, so not sure it's helpful to state all this as fact.

Boulshired · 20/04/2020 22:49

DP wears one for work, the advice given to him was a bowl of boiling water that has been left to stand for 10 minutes after boiling. 15 minutes in the bowl then washed and rinsed with a small amount of washing up liquid.

Niceweather22 · 20/04/2020 22:53

Boulshired that sounds a good tip

If you hand wash individually in soapy water I would think it will be as good as it gets. I guess the 60 degrees would kill any residual virus trapped in the fabric

Watertorture · 20/04/2020 23:07

I have also seen a video about masks that recommended ironing very hot (and with steam) straight after wearing it, boiling it in a pan and ironing again before wearing.
