Are you in Yorkshire

Sorry blatantly posting for traffic.

If you're in Yorkshire can you recommend anywhere we can drive to (since we are now allowed apparently) for a socially distanced walk with a toddler?

I've given up near us and haven't been any further than the garden in a week (DH has on his own though), we live on greenbelt but in a quite densely populated village/suburb and it's like bloody Piccadilly circus. No chance of social distancing really, this is in part due to the nature of the area - lots of single track farm paths and then roads which only have pavements on one side, but we also have a lot of idiots who don't understand social distancing. Apparently since they said you could drive it's got even busier with people driving and parking all over the pavements - this was reported to me by DH.

We've kind of thought well if you can't beat em.......I want to social distance though 100% and certainly don't want to piss residents off so can't be close to houses/residential areas, and ideally needs to be a vast or really large open space and with lots of places to park spread out so you could park away from other cars safely and without obstructing anything - Ideally in North or West Yorks.

Wracking my brains but can't think. We don't really go further afield unless its the coast or National Trust as plenty of family walks on our doorstep.

What, you can drive out for a walk now?? So I can chuck the dog in the car and go for a walk away from this god forsaken street?

Chillicheese123 · 20/04/2020 13:27

Yes you can

GettingFatterByTheDay · 20/04/2020 13:29

So if I drive 40 minutes away to a deserted national trust place the police won’t be sat there waiting to move me on?

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/04/2020 13:29

I AM in Yorkshire, but as it's the biggest county in the country, I'm clueless as to how I can help without knowing a bit more information, such as exactly where you are.

For example, it takes me 2 hours to get to Bradford...

Alb1 · 20/04/2020 13:30

Were abouts are you? Your suppose to spend significantly more time exercising than driving which could be hard with a toddler so probably need to narrow it down.

QuestionableMouse · 20/04/2020 13:31

Have a poke about on Google maps.

The beach nearest to me has been very quiet but I'm not sure if you're allowed to use it.

QuestionableMouse · 20/04/2020 13:31

Beaches in gene, not that one in particular I mean!

Bunnybigears · 20/04/2020 13:31

I'm from Yorkshire but you are really going to have to be a lot more specific it's a huge county!

Frozenfan2019 · 20/04/2020 13:33

Yorkshire is the largest county in the country. I would suggest you stay within a few miles in case of car troubles etc.

DIKateFleming · 20/04/2020 13:35

Where are you now? My parents live on the north York’s/ lancs border and you can walk for miles without seeing a soul

Haffdonga · 20/04/2020 13:36

I think you've misunderstood the advice. The guidance says that driving a short distance to walk when you are doing much more walking than driving is likely to be acceptable.

If you are driving some way away from your village to go for a walk with a toddler I can't imagine you will be walking for miles and only driving for a short while.

If Yorkshire is full of people like you thinking if you can't beat'em... then there will be no empty spaces.

HavenDilemma · 20/04/2020 13:37

You can only drive a short distance OP Hmm Yorkshire is massive!

Your drive cannot take longer than your walk

Are you in Yorkshire
ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2020 13:37

I'm from Yorkshire but you are really going to have to be a lot more specific it's a huge county!

It's three huge counties!
The police guidance for what's likely to be reasonable is :

Driving to countryside and walking (where far more time is spent walking than driving).

So, how long will your walk with a toddler be? If it's about an hour then 'far more' suggests that the round trip shouldn't be more than about 30 minutes.

So, you need to look on an OS map for paths and then think about whether there are lay-bys available within about 15 minutes drive. Car parks in obviously nice walking areas are likely to be shut.

Sorry, meant to add link to the full police guidelines doc

Casino218 · 20/04/2020 13:39

Yorkshire is massive - Try around Thirsk in North York's. Doesn't attract loads of tourists but some lovely walks, hills. Around Thervaux Abbey? Bingley Waest York's Eldwick near Bradford. Lovely

ethelredonagoodday · 20/04/2020 13:41

Yep similarly was going to say, we maybe need at boy more to go at location wise OP.

hammeringinmyhead · 20/04/2020 13:41

Depends where you are. My parents are doing the local reservoirs with their dog but there is no point me suggesting Yateholme if you're in Harrogate.

ethelredonagoodday · 20/04/2020 13:41

*or, a bit more, even...

vanillandhoney · 20/04/2020 13:42

Your location would help? Yorkshire is pretty big Grin

GettingFatterByTheDay · 20/04/2020 13:42

Are beaches allowed?

GingerRodgers18 · 20/04/2020 13:42

@VickyEadieofThigh @Bunnybigears @Alb1 within an hour of Leeds ideally - so North or West Yorks, Maybe East if closer inland. We're nr M1.

Toddler will still go in back carrier alternated between a bit of walking himself so distance of walk not too much of a worry.

OP posts:
GreyishDays · 20/04/2020 13:44

Roughly where are you? Just look at footpaths nearby?

GingerRodgers18 · 20/04/2020 13:44

@hammeringinmyhead my parents have been doing the ones near them (south yorks) and they've said the parking and entry is the issue there as they're small and it seems to bottleneck at the entrances on to the walk.

OP posts:
GreyishDays · 20/04/2020 13:45

But I think you’re only meant to be doing a five minute drive. Yes it’s boring seeing the same places again and again but it’s necessary.

Alb1 · 20/04/2020 13:48

An hour is more than you should be travelling unfortunatly. You’ve probably already exhausted it if you live in Leeds but Roundhay park is lovely, and will keep you entertained as it’s pretty big, nice lake to walk round etc and easy to socially distance. National trust places are closed and have asked people not to go to them so I wouldn’t bother with that.
