CF thread (bins)

Brief history. Have recently moved into a new property (3 days before lockdown). It’s bin day today so at 7am this morning I put my bin out next to the other 3 at the end of the cul de sac. Then went off to work. Have just got back and found someone has put a very large black bin liner in my bin and now the lid doesn’t close. One of the other 3 neighbours has been away since I’ve moved in so hasn’t been using their bin. However that one is full too. So out of the other two neighbours, one of them has done this. I am a bit of a wuss and hate confrontation. So if I go and take out the bin liner whoever put it in there will see me take it out. AIBU to take out the bin liner and just leave it next to the bins? We have a closed lid policy here for our bins and I don’t want to take the risk that they won’t empty it. But on the other hand I don’t want to fall out with my (very) new neighbours. WWYD?

Make a stand. If you let them do this now, they will keep doing it.

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 20/04/2020 12:15

Take it out.
Drop kick it across the cul de sac.
Order a bin lock.

OneandTwenty · 20/04/2020 12:21

absolutely get a bin lock.

If you know that there is a strict policy about rubbish collection, take the bag out, stick a message on it if you want (put in your already full bin by mistake, please put in your own bin - something like that)

Nothing more rude than people using others rubbish bins!

WhenItIsOver · 20/04/2020 12:36

Take the bin back in so they can't see you.
Open the bag and see if there is anything in it to identify where it is from.
Bung it all back in the bag and leave it by the bin of the house it came from.
Get a bin lock.

Our place did have a strict closed lid policy but now die to us al being at home 24/7 it has been relaxed. I'd either take it out and leave it on the door or open it to see if you can ID whose bin it is and deposit it on their path.

As I went out to take it out the bin men came. I asked if they’d take it and they did. Not sure if a bin lock would work as it would have to be unlocked for the bin men. The rubbish was put in there after I’d gone to work on bin day. I think I’m going to tape a note to the bin saying please do not dispose of your rubbish in my bin without asking first. Not much else I can do.

Bin locks unlock when the bins are tipped upside into the wagon

ExclamationPerfume · 20/04/2020 16:29

As the poster above says they are gravity locks so open when the bin is tipped upside down.

pkgsq · 20/04/2020 16:33

Go round and talk to them. It's nice to know your neighbours and notes come across as really passive aggressive, it won't do anyone any favours to get off on the wrong foot. Go and have a chat (standing two meters away) introduce yourself and mention the bins in passing. They will probably tell you it was a one off and they won't do it again, problem solved hopefully!

Sammysees · 20/04/2020 17:42

I didn’t realise that about bin locks! And yes @pkgsq you’re right. That would be the best way of handling it. As an aside - someone’s nicked my recycling box now 😂
