Someone berated me for asking why they are making "Scrubs bags" for the NHS

I signed up to help this person, however all they seem to be making are pillow cases for doctors and nurses to take their scrubs home.
I thought this was really unhygienic as they are going to be made of cotton.

I told her they would have to be lined with some sort of plastic to stop infection and then she called me for everything.
She has people on her page saying "My (dad, mother,son,uncle,gran.....) died I would like the sheets she died in to be made into a nice bag for the NHS workers to know how much they meant to her"
I find this a bit weird, disgusting and a total spread of corona virus.
I may be totally wrong but I would not want to touch a dead persons sheets made into a scrub bag

Scrub bags don’t need to be lined with plastic. They’re just a measure to keep potentially contaminated clothes separate until they’re washed.

Porcupineinwaiting · 19/04/2020 23:36

Actually I think just cotton is best. Then you can put the whole thing in the wash without unpacking it and risking germs spreading. It is how COVID patients are advised to handle their washing anyway.

EvilTwins · 19/04/2020 23:36

And the idea is that they get thrown in the washing machine with the clothes inside them, so lining them with plastic would be a bit silly.

x-post!

FAQs · 19/04/2020 23:38

Someone in our village is also making cotton draw string bags, the scrubs and bag go in the washing machine together.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/04/2020 23:38

NHS staff are being told to remove their uniform/scrubs before leaving the hospital, take them home and wash them separately.

People are making cotton bags for them to put the clothes into then they can throw them straights in the machine bag and all and wash them on a hot wash, which is why they need to be cotton.

Dry them then bag them up to take into work to get dressed into.

Otherwise they go into a carrier bag which has ended up contaminated and can't be washed in the machine.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 19/04/2020 23:38

They are literally for doctors and nurses to put scrubs in so they don’t go next to other clothes/their bag etc on the way home then the whole thing, bag and all, goes on the machine to be washed.

Cotton is perfect and plastic unnecessary

gianthippo · 19/04/2020 23:38

I get the thinking behind scrub bags, but I'm quite dubious about some of the other items that people are making at home.

I'm not sure that masks, headbands, hats and scrubs made out of second hand duvets by a well-meaning crafter / hobbyist are going to meet the required standards. I think people just like to feel useful. My mum works for a sector of the NHS and they have received some totally useless and unsuitable donations from the public.

I hope a more formal manufacturing solution can be found soon. As well-meaning as people are, I don't think DIY crafts are the answer.

Although sheets someone died in is odd.

GetOuttaMySwamp · 19/04/2020 23:40

As others have said, the idea is you throw the whole lot in the wash, to keep scrubs separate and reduce need for handling.

A plastic bag would be a good idea to carry it in, rather than putting it directly in a handbag or on car seats though, I would have thought (but obviously any old plastic bag would do).

Daftodil · 19/04/2020 23:41

I would like the sheets she died in to be made into a nice bag for the NHS workers to know how much they meant to her

WTAF?!

menacingvern · 19/04/2020 23:42

Wowbutter thanks for that. I was only asking a question and I stand corrected

menacingvern · 19/04/2020 23:46

Dafodil I don't know what WTAF means..sorry

"My (dad, mother,son,uncle,gran.....) died I would like the sheets she died in to be made into a nice bag for the NHS workers to know how much they meant to her"

Sorry, what now?! Am I reading this right, someone wants to make a scrub bag for an NHS worker out of the sheets one of their patients died in, to show them what they meant? Is that right? Hmm

menacingvern · 19/04/2020 23:51

Sorry if I have offended anyone. I stand corrected and they probably are a nice thing to make

OP posts:
LetTheCabbagesDie · 19/04/2020 23:51

Not if they are what I think they are. I can't imagine anyone in the NHS wants that

gianthippo · 19/04/2020 23:52

I would like the sheets she died in to be made into a nice bag for the NHS

That's weird ^

I'm sure there are already millions of new pillowcases in the existing supply chain that can be obtained and used. It's all just about people wanting to feel good, rather than actually being useful.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 19/04/2020 23:52

@wowbutter Im only seeing one twat here....

I agree OP, no one wants a bag made of sheets someone died in! A pillow case does the job, nothing really needs to be made.

Ive seen some very unsuitable things being made. I feel bad because people are putting time and effort into these things but a crocheted mask is not going to help anyone

menacingvern · 19/04/2020 23:53

LetTheCabbagesDie yeah that's what they thought would be a nice tribute

OP posts:
HesterLee · 19/04/2020 23:54

I am a nurse and am using cotton bags to take my uniform home in. Like others say, it goes straight in the washing machine with my uniform. I hated the thought of using a plastic bag every shift plus disposing of it correctly would become a nightmare.
A bag made from those sheets though is not the nicest thought.

shwirurbsha · 19/04/2020 23:55

A bag made from dead peoples sheets is just so weird.

Isawthathaggis · 19/04/2020 23:56

I’ve had to bite my lip and stop my fingers many times over the last week or so since scrub-bags became a thing.
Just put the clothes in a pillow case surely?
Of course people want to help, but the time and energy going into something that doesn’t need to be done is a waste.
I’m sad for the people.
