If I never hear the words “exercise walk”...

... or even “daily exercise” again it will be too soon.

We don’t need you to say I saw X, Y, or Z whilst on “my exercise walk” - you were out on a walk. You don’t need to add the word exercise to it in order to legitimise it. We all know walks are allowed as a form of exercise, we don’t need it spelling out. It sounds so twee. AIBU?

I’ve never heard anyone call it that tbh.Confused

LolaSmiles · 19/04/2020 14:44

YANBU

Most people I know go for walks/dog walks/runs/bike rides.
Though I'm easily amused by the phrase 'daily exercise' being used on here to cover a whole multitude of things.

vanillandhoney · 19/04/2020 14:44

I've never heard "exercise walk" before in my life!

puffinandkoala · 19/04/2020 17:43

I've heard people referring to it as a "Boris walk".

I did stop following someone on Strava though because every run he did he put "solo and safe distancing" in brackets after it. Nobody is looking at your Strava, and anyway, even if they were, would they just take your word for it?

Makeitgoaway · 19/04/2020 17:45

I've never ever heard that expression either.

I quite like the idea of daily exercise becoming the norm and hope it stays, even if it is only a stroll, it's very good for the soul

BogRollBOGOF · 19/04/2020 17:50

The irony is that most people plodding around are barely exercising. It's still healthy for the body and mind to be out, but please don't be overrating the exercise benefits of shuffling around at less than 2mph (assuming no health complications to make this onerous)

I suppose it's just a self-defense mechanism against the Coronastasi and witch-hunters making sure that people are strictly following all guidelines, both official and made-up.

Sparklesocks · 19/04/2020 18:11

I’ve never heard it, but I suppose there are a bunch of curtain twitchers out there poised to call the police if their neighbour Sandra goes to the Co-Op twice in one day. So then some are worried people think they are just dicking about outside and ignoring lockdown so feel the need to clarify why they were out.

WhenItIsOver · 19/04/2020 18:11

I hate the term 'Boris walk'. Seems to be everywhere and people that say it think they are so original.

OwlBeThere · 19/04/2020 18:14

I had one Facebook friend who referred to it as her ‘mandated daily exercise hour’.
Note the ‘HAD’ in that sentence.

MikeBawldwinsBras · 19/04/2020 18:15

You do have to say it on MN because so many people think you shouldn't be leaving the house unless they agree it's okay. One area they struggle to complain about is 'exercise' so ..

captainprincess · 19/04/2020 18:21

Never heard anyone say this, but I eagerly await it now Grin

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 19/04/2020 18:25

I hear you!

My social media is full of “daily exercise” “essential food shop” will it ever stop? To be fair if people don’t state why they are out they do tend to get jumped on by Sarah or Jane you know the police without the badge.

It reminds me of a Mumsnet post when someone has been to McDonald’s and they justify in the opening post by saying it was after a long day, and the dc only go once a year etc etc as they know the “McDonald’s is disgusting I never eat there” “how could you feed your dc that crap” posters will be along shortly

justanotherneighinparadise · 19/04/2020 18:28

Oh god I have such a dislike for all the gits who are out there wandering about who wouldn’t be otherwise. They march past the window with a variety of strap on bloody water bottles and other shite. Fine, you’re going out for a walk, that’s nice. Don’t act like your hiking up a mountain or navigating some perilous journey across lakes and forests. You’re walking around the village numbskulls.

Samtsirch · 19/04/2020 18:52

“all the gits who are out there wandering about “
This made me laugh 😂

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 19/04/2020 18:56

Oh god I have such a dislike for all the gits who are out there wandering about who wouldn’t be otherwise.

That's probably because they are not at work? They could exercise early in the morning or late at night during normal times, or have various methods that are not possible now. Or have an active job,on their feet all day so they didn't need anything extra.

No one saw me before the lockdown because I do the school run on foot,I walk to work, I walk/run with kids at break, working in a school there's a fair amount of movement involved, I spend my lunch hour walking, and then school run, home ,clubs etc on foot again.

Now with nothing to do or anywhere to go, I could do as little as 1-2k steps a day. Just because no one saw me before, doesn't mean I wasn't active in my own way.

ELM8 · 19/04/2020 19:00

Yep it seems like pretty much everyone on my Facebook is captioning any outdoor photo they post with "whilst out on my daily exercise" or "daily one hour exercise".. did I miss the memo of it being a) a requirement to exercise daily b) necessary to keep to a one hour limit?!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/04/2020 19:11

Probably because there are so many curtain twitchers/social media police around at the moment ready to jump in with "well what were you doing out of the house" comments so people feel the need to justify why they were out straight away.

And for PP who is sick of people "who wouldn't normally be out" well yeah, because a lot of people are now out of work and gyms are shut. I normally walk to work and back so I wouldn't be going for walks in the daytime, but now I'm on furlough and I want to get some fresh air thanks.

emmcan · 19/04/2020 19:12

Local park.
Group of women of a 'ladies that lunch' profile having a picnic.
Group of lads playing football.
Group of random teens just...hanging out, and vaping.

Police car in car park, two officers, doing nothing.

What lockdown???

MikeBawldwinsBras · 19/04/2020 19:24

@emmcan

Maybe the local park you're in (it's always people doing it 'right' that are out seeing people doing it 'wrong) isn't representative of an entire nation which is mostly complying with 'lockdown' to the point the government has been quite surprised and it was expected that not everyone would comply and that had been figured in to policies?

TheHumanSatsuma · 19/04/2020 19:43

For those moaning about us “shuffling around”

I’m no longer the person who cycled 8 miles to work at 5am in under 30 mins, who did 15 mile overnight hikes for fun, or swam 120 lengths at lunchtime.

I got old, I got arthritis, at 31 my spine started crumbling. I walk, slowly. I stop...get over yourself.

QuinceSavedMyLife · 19/04/2020 19:53

Oh god I have such a dislike for all the gits who are out there wandering about who wouldn’t be otherwise.
I have such a dislike for all the gits who think they are special and have more right to be out and about than anyone else.

TheHumanSatsuma · 19/04/2020 20:01

Quince saved my life ..👌👏🏻

Nearlythere1 · 19/04/2020 20:41

I've found it weird how so many people seem to think, or at least act, like it's state-mandated to exercise for an hour right now.
