To get rid of this??

I loved this area when I moved in - fairy lights etc - but now, it's become a mess despite regular pruning and hacking back. The structure itself is really wonky and the plants just look wild and overbearing. I did the little patio area last year as it was mossy grass before but I'm now thinking of getting rid of the whole arbour, extending the patio by one row, and getting a corner sofa and table. Not sure how I'll manage it - with a saw and brute force I guess, but I usually get there in the end...

By AIBU is around the plants - there is an Ivy, a vine and a jasmine type thing. There would be no other option other than to sever as the vine particular has become free/branch like....

What do you all think?!

To get rid of this??

Sorry I know nothing about gardening but I have to say it looks beautiful

Dollygirl2008 · 19/04/2020 12:02

Any other ideas??

If that's a mess remind me to never share pictures of my garden. Grin

Honestly OP it looks lovely, and I think you'll regret it if you got rid.

MitziK · 19/04/2020 12:46

Leave it be. The birds will be loving it.

AlwaysCheddar · 19/04/2020 12:47

Leave it, it’s gorgeous!

Ponoka7 · 19/04/2020 14:01

It would be a shame to cut down an established jasmine and ivy. Could you redirect them with supports on the back fence? Or take cuttings. I'd consider a honeysuckle on the back fences as well.

The weight is eventually going to bring it down, so you'd be better doing that yourself.

Tunnocks34 · 19/04/2020 14:09

Not what you’re asking but I think it looks beautiful.

OscarWildesCat · 19/04/2020 14:09

I think its lovely, I little oasis, perhaps tidy it up a it if its annoying you but I think keep it, it's pretty. I'm planning something similar at the top of my garden for me to hide in with gin sit in Smile

Dollygirl2008 · 19/04/2020 20:48

It has been nicknamed "prosecco corner"!!

tensmum1964 · 19/04/2020 21:19

I love it.

Louiselouie0890 · 19/04/2020 21:29

I think your insane. It's nice and tucked away and cosy. I wouldnt change it

Gordonsgrin · 19/04/2020 21:32

I think the structure and planting is great. But I think you could put different, less imposing furniture in there. And that would make a huge difference.

TimeforTea20 · 19/04/2020 21:41

I think it looks lovely too

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2020 21:43

Just get rid of the bench extend the patio and add your corner sofa and table.

Fidgety31 · 19/04/2020 21:44

You just need to trim back the greenery a bit so it isn’t as bushy and it will look a lot better .
Paint the fence behind it and change the beach for two chairs a table

mineofuselessinformation · 19/04/2020 21:51

Please check for birds nesting in it before you make any decisions.
I had something similar on the back of my old house and used to have birds nest in it.
If you really want to tidy it up a bit, wait until the autumn and then start by trimming plants back on the top, then consider whether or not you want to take the whole lot down.
I agree with others that 'Prosecco corner' looks lovely!

Samtsirch · 19/04/2020 21:51

Leave it, it’s beautiful.
The plants you mention are important for supporting wildlife, and the aesthetic / visual effect is stunning.
It looks like a “secret garden “ area, very romantic..

Samtsirch · 19/04/2020 21:54

I actually spent years working on parts of my garden to develop established areas like this .
It’s gorgeous 👍🏼

Dollygirl2008 · 19/04/2020 21:59

Thank you all for your kind comments! They've made me really think about my course of action!!!

It looks lovely.

BUT
we had a similar thing with a MASSIVE jasminy thing growing up one side.
Eventually I caved in to dh nagging and chopped the jasmine thing down completely.
WOW I wished I'd done it sooner. The light, space, view down the garden was all improved.
I had hesitated becuase it was all green and lush, and stayed green in the winter. I was really glad we did it afterwards.
Then I planted a clematis, one that is thinner and more delicate lookign with pretty flowers. Miles better.

In UK, that amount of greenery is often damp and drippping!

So I would say, be bold and chop down half the greenery, open it up a bit, extend your patio if you want more space and put the sofa under it, but do get rid of half that heavy green.

BlueJava · 19/04/2020 22:13

I love it too - i would leave it

StripeyDeckchair · 19/04/2020 22:42

It looks like a lovely corner.
If any of the plants are an issue it's most likely to be the ivy which grows incredibly fast and is a thug.
I hate ivy, (I'm allergic to it & it sets off my hay fever) so I'd get rid of it.

PiggyPokkyFool · 19/04/2020 22:48

Listen to @Bluntness100 - she is 100% correct.

StoneofDestiny · 19/04/2020 23:04

Get rid of the ivy and plant some clematis, wisteria or similar

Sacredspace · 19/04/2020 23:33

I absolutely love that little set up! I would sit there sheltering when it’s raining x
