I was at school. I didn't get a full-time job until I was 19, and lived at home spending my money on clothes and travelling (glorified holidays)

Dogsaresomucheasier · 18/04/2020 23:09

At uni, worked full time every holiday, still needed student loans.

HellOfATime919 · 18/04/2020 23:12

Working part time whilst all my friends were at uni then ended up pregnant whilst still living with my mum and sister. Managed to pull it all back after two years though

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 18/04/2020 23:14

Single parent 4 months after my 18th, living off benifits at home with my parents in a ting bedroom.

Rollercoasteride · 18/04/2020 23:17

Lived with parents, had part time job in supermarket. Started going out with DH. Went out 3-4 times a week. Those were the days

BBCONEANDTWO · 18/04/2020 23:18

Full time job and part time job in pub - living at home, no savings but pissed all the time.

Dita73 · 18/04/2020 23:19

I was still living with my parents on severe disablement allowance

LoadsaBlusher · 18/04/2020 23:20

Full time job arranging house viewings

Pjsandbaileys · 18/04/2020 23:26

Lived at home while at uni, worked pt saved up got married and mortgage by 20. I have no idea why I was in a rush to have the husband and house I had a great home life with my parents, all my friends were living the typical uni life. If I did it all again I'd spend a few more years being a teenager 😄

MegaClutterSlut · 18/04/2020 23:30

I had sweet FA at 18. Any money I earned was spent pretty much straight away on clothes

Ds 18 (still at home) has nearly 3 grand saved up so for driving lessons and a car so hes doing a lot better than me Grin

HandfulOfDust · 18/04/2020 23:33

At 18?I was at sixth form then went to uni and I lived at home half the time and uni half the time. Got a student loan and an allowance from my parents. I'd supplement that with some work in the holidays. I think I saved a little bit too but only because my parents helped out.

HandfulOfDust · 18/04/2020 23:35

My parents even offered to pay for my driving lessons but I just took a few lessons and gave up (as I was too lazy and lived between London and my largely pedestrianised uni town). Which meant I waited until I was almost 30 and spent thousands on the lessons because my reaction time and motor skills had massively deteriorated and I had become super scared of the road.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/04/2020 23:41

Doing my A levels, had a Saturday job.

Pigeonpresent · 18/04/2020 23:44

Dropped out of college, living at home, working at a bar, spending all my wages on booze and train tickets to see my boyfriend. I wouldn’t let my own kids get away with it now!

junecat · 18/04/2020 23:45

Full time, weekend job, evening classes at college and a mortgage.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 18/04/2020 23:47

was still in School, due for A Levels that summer. 15 pounds a month from my Dad as we didn:t have uniform in sixth form and - of Course - I had to buy more clothes!

BertieBotts · 18/04/2020 23:54

Pound a pint :o Those were the days!

Just calculated the wage I earned for that job. It was over the 18-21 minimum wage at the time but not as much as the 22+ one!

Susanna85 · 18/04/2020 23:55

Leaving a private school with average grades. About £10k inheritance from an uncle (put it in an ISA). A bit of money from occasional work as an event catering waitress.
And moved city for uni, lived in halls, everything paid for by my parents and I had a brilliant time partying and not studying. I was an ungrateful cow. 10 years on and I realise how lucky and how wasteful I was.

catfeets · 19/04/2020 00:01

Had a job that paid sod all yet managed to save for a deposit on a house within a couple of years. Paid board to my mum so didn't have the money to do much.
I was always responsible (boring) with money but it was a good decision as I'm in a decent place 15yrs later.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/04/2020 00:05

Sussann85 - I had my University fees, lodgings , Food, etc. Paid for by my Dad, but Party Moneyl was up to me to earn -which I did.

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 19/04/2020 00:06

Just graduating high school. Had a decent summer job, did as much tutoring as I could on the side and had some savings (couple thousand (Canadian)). I would have just received a very significant academic scholarship to uni so was feeling good about that. I was living at home with minimal outgoing costs besides paying for my horse.

Rumtopf · 19/04/2020 00:14

Had been living in a shared flat for a year and I was working at a hotel full-time and completing training. Had bought myself a car and had a good amount of savings. Very independent.

samandpoppysmummy · 19/04/2020 01:23

In 1987, when I was still 18, my parents moved away from my home town and and I didn't want to go with them (although my younger siblings did), so I moved into a shared house with my best friend and a lodger that we sublet the third bedroom to. I had two jobs - an office job (as a Trainee Buyer) from 8.30am-5pm and I worked in the kitchen of my local pub four nights a week from 6-10pm. I lived quite frugally but managed to put money into my savings account every month to pay for 'luxuries' like my annual Glastonbury ticket and car maintenance / petrol. I drove a 1968 Triumph Herald Convertible (manufactured the same year I was born), which I paid £600 cash for and was my pride and joy for many years. I went out clubbing every Saturday night, straight after my shift at the pub and I always drove there and back and just drank tap water.

I started full time work in September 1985 just after my 17th birthday (I decided after one week of Upper Sixth that I'd had enough of school). I have been financially independent of my parents since I left home at 18. I did well at work and bought my first house for £38,000 when I was 21 (in the days of 100% mortgages and 13% fixed rate interest rates!). I carried on working four nights a week at the pub as well as my main job for almost five years.

RainbowMum11 · 19/04/2020 01:55

Was doing A-levels and had 3 part time jobs.
I earned more then that when I got my first full time job (so still had a part time job and studied too)

ParkheadParadise · 19/04/2020 02:09

At 18 I moved into a rented flat with dd who was 3 at the time.
I started work in a factory doing 12 hr shifts. Dd was at nursery.
With my first wage I bought her a pair of red patent boots(weird stuff you remember from 24 yrs ago).
All my money went on the house and dd. My parents helped me furnish my flat. I lived from week to week financially.
