Not taking gran to hospital ?

borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:12

My gran is 101 she still lives at home as she lives with me and my family.
Yesterday she had a fall,we tell her don't stand up without us but she doesn't listen.
She's hurt her leg,top of thigh hurting when she tried to walk and she was hobbling with it.
No pain when she sat down.
We thought she might have bruised or strained herself.
Tucked her in bed last night and got up this morning,
She had made herself a cup of tea and was sat in kitchen.
She is still hobbling and not walking properly as she says it still is a bit sore.
Out of 10 she said a 1 or 2.
I'm terrified to take her to hospital as our local hospital has had so many covifd deaths and the wards are full.
I'm scared at her age if she caught it that would be it.
She seems her normal self and says it's not hurting much unless she try's to walk and it's only mild.
Would you wait and see how she goes?
When she fell yesterday she got up herself and walked to the chair.
I'm terrified to take her to hospital for x ray etc
Aibu here ?

I called 111 and they don't me to get her to elevate it and apply ice to thigh area.

Also we asked her and she refused to go anyway as she is stubborn as a mule

I think I'd go with 111 advice.

It's a tough call though. I guess ultimately you have to go with what she wants.

Feelingpoorlysick · 18/04/2020 10:19

See how she goes, if she is managing to walk around abit and isnt in too much pain she probably just needs to rest it.

Mumblechum0 · 18/04/2020 10:19

Cross post.

Is your local urgent care walk-in clinic open, OP? Ours has x-ray facilities and is far speedier than A&E usually. I just checked on the app - they are open and have no waiting time at all. Yours might be similar?

Mopedfear · 18/04/2020 10:21

I would wait and see if that’s what she wants to do

quarantinevibes · 18/04/2020 10:21

I would see how she gets on. Encourage her to have a rest. I don’t blame you I wouldn’t take her unless she was in agony and unable to walk at the moment. I hope she feels better Flowers

vdbfamily · 18/04/2020 10:23

If she is walking through the pain and it is only 2 out of 10 I would watch and wait. A hip fractures is likely to be more painful and a pubic Rami fracture they would only great with pain relief anyway. She sounds amazing. Maybe regular pain relief and just see how she goes. However, if pain gets worse then take her for an x- ready. A&E's are pretty quiet at the moment and our local consultant was on radio 4 telling people not to avoid a&e as they are worried about where all the poorly people are.

borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:23

Oh I didn't even think about the urgent care
Saying that I doubt she would go
A few years ago she had a slight stroke and the ambulance crew had to phone the police to get her to hospital
As she refused to go but the paramedics wouldn't leave her as they thought she was at risk.

Hopingitrains · 18/04/2020 10:23

I’d follow 111 advice. I think it is a good sign that she is able to get up though, so hopefully after some ice and rest it will improve.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 18/04/2020 10:26

She might have a fracture
A and E are very quiet currently and have "red" and "green" areas
The non covid patients are kept seperate
I'd want an x ray to exclude a fracture and if it's sore and makes her unable to mobilise that puts her at risk of other complications

borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:29

If it was a fracture what would the treatment plan be?

OP posts:
borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:29

Would it be a operation ?
At 101 I would be terrified
She's 102 in 3 months.

I'd call 111 and take their advice as she may have a fracture.

It's a tricky one I know. I had to call an ambulance for my DH after a fall on Thursday and having checked him over they said that he might have cracked a rib but that the hospital wouldn't do anything about it. Said that it was probably safer for him to manage the pain at home.

EverdeRose · 18/04/2020 10:38

If she's still managing to get about, albeit with a bit of a hobble and she says she's not got pain I'd be very tempted to hold off going to a&e.
If it was a severe injury like a break you'd expect her to either be immobile, in a lot of pain or both. There's little treatment wise they can do for anything else anywhere. Apply heat and ice therapy, use arnica to get rid of bruising and elevate to prevent swelling. If she's no better in a day or two broach urgent care with her again.

Scoobygang7 · 18/04/2020 10:41

Are her legs the same length? And can she keep both feet pointing upto the ceiling with her legs out. Pain doesn't necessarily mean there's no fracture, my gran broke her hip and could still walk without much pain.

perniciousdot · 18/04/2020 10:41

I'm terrified to take her to hospital as our local hospital has had so many covifd deaths and the wards are full.

Hmmtake her to be seen fgs.

AJPTaylor · 18/04/2020 10:42

If she has capacity I would listen to her.

SD1978 · 18/04/2020 10:44

You'd be surprised at the amount t of movement elderly peopl manage with fractures- have seem older adults mobilise on acutely fractured hips. She really needs an X-ray, even if just as an outpatient.

borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:48

She won't go,I can't drag her out the door.
Il listen to 111 and get her to rest it and apply ice etc
If still no better il try again with asking her to pop up for x ray.
It's difficult with her being so head strong.

borislovesme · 18/04/2020 10:49

Thanks everyone for all your advice.
I really appreciate it
Hope everyone is staying safe

Having had a family member earlier this year fall and hobble around for 6 weeks to then find they had had a hip fracture that needed much more serious revision surgery than an initial surgery would be I would say go.
If you leave it and it is fractured she is likely to be in hospital much longer than if you go now.

perniciousdot · 18/04/2020 11:00

She won't go,I can't drag her out the door.

Oh, well I'm not sure what you are really asking then
