UK holidays booked for July and August - AIBU not to cancel

GlummyMcGlummerson · 18/04/2020 06:36

Due to go to Devon early July and Center Parcs end of August. Devon final payment is due next week and Center Parcs has to be paid off next month. Have considered cancelling but not sure if I'd get a refund or credit should the holidays not go ahead!

What do people think the chances are we'll be able to go? And if it's "no chance" is it best to pay anyway?

If you have travel insurance you will be refunded so I wouldn’t cancel just yet. My Mother has a holiday to Spain booked in July and I’ve told her it probably won’t go ahead, she doesn’t believe me.

Dizzylin · 18/04/2020 10:06

We've got 2 weeks in Devon booked at the end of Aug. It's a holiday Park with entertainment etc, I'm hoping we can still go even if the club is closed and we have to follow social distancing rules.

It may not be the usual holiday we have there (go every year) but it would be nice to be able to get away.

My daughter applied to work through an agency & has been told there’s no work available. We live within cycling distance of fruit & veg farms. She’s bored & would love to earn some money

LizziesTwin · 18/04/2020 11:17

Sorry, wrong thread

lockeddownandcrazy · 18/04/2020 16:28

We are just hanging on to our booking - abroad - end of July, and doing nothing at the moment.

midnightstar66 · 18/04/2020 16:31

Keep the bookings, you're more likely to get a refund if they are forced to cancel further down the line and of course there is a small chance you'll be able to go. Will be well deserved if you can

steppemum · 18/04/2020 16:40

For UK bookings, I think it is quite likely that you will be able to go in July and especially August,

But for me the point is this:
If the government say you can't then the holiday company can't let the house/hotel etc to you as the government say they have to be closed.
In those circumstances, THEY have to refund you your money as THEY are closed.

If the government say that places can re-open then you can go ahead anyway.

The real sticking point will be if you yourself are ill and can't travel, and then your insurance probably won't pay. But if the government is allowing holidays in UK at that point, I think you could probably sell your bookign for profit!

We are booked on a Haven camp in July, balance due beginning of May. We will be paying it and hoping to go. My concern is that the holiday parks may well be open, but everything else i.e. pubs, restaurants, attractions etc. will be shut. In that case we obviously won't want to go, but worry that Haven could say in that case no refund as the park is open and we are choosing not to travel.

TeenPlusTwenties · 18/04/2020 16:46

I think another difficulty could be if the letting is allowed (eg holiday cottage) but all the places you'd want to visit are closed (eg restaurants, amusement parks, zoos).

TeenPlusTwenties · 18/04/2020 16:47

x-post with Thyme Smile

x2boys · 18/04/2020 16:49

Surely they can't say that Thyme? We picked he Haven we are supposed to be going to,because amongst s other things the pool looks amazing they can't charge the same if none of the facilities are open surely?

x2boys · 18/04/2020 16:54

Or reading again maybe you mean attractions etc off site ,which I agree would be a problem I think it will be difficult ,this year because expect we will still have to social distance in July/ August which would be difficult in a place like Haven ,Butlins etc

Extracurricularfatigue · 18/04/2020 16:55

We’ve got a deposit with an independent hotel abroad at the end of August. They are offering full deposit refund for cancellations up to seven days before the holiday and are in one of the countries starting to lift lockdown. I’m assuming we won’t go, to stop myself feeling too gutted, but also of course really hoping we can. How countries experience the lifting of lockdown over the next couple of weeks will be a huge clue to the likelihood of this sort of thing I think. The hotel claims it is reopening in mid-May so I am interested to see how that works.

Sunshine1239 · 18/04/2020 16:59

I think it’ll all we sorted by then and all holidays will be on

Evconomy will eventually become more important than the lockdown benefits

Daffodil101 · 18/04/2020 17:10

We had a European holiday booked. I cancelled it and booked a uk holiday last week.

My main concern was not wanting to fly, flights being cancelled due to reduced capacity (social distancing on planes meaning 1/3 of the people booked can’t fly because 1/3 of seats left empty due to distancing), and getting ill abroad.

We are going to Cornwall. If any of us fall ill in Cornwall, I won’t dream of laying the problem at their door, Treliske wouldn’t cope. I’d drive home.

GlowWine · 18/04/2020 17:12

Yes I have a fully paid ferry crossing and deposit on a gite in France booked early August. Assume it's not happening but any refunds will only happen if the company cancels. I'll see what happens when the balance for the gite is due in ?June...

Thymelord · 18/04/2020 18:07

Yeah I mean that whilst the park may be open, along with all their facilities, it would be a bit pointless if everything else in the town/surrounding area is shut.

I've tried to ring and find out but it is impossible to get through to them.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/04/2020 18:15

My Lourdes pilgrimage has been cancelled for the end of July, so I've booked a fancy hotel in Cornwall instead. I'm
Not cancelling that until the day before!

Seesawswing · 18/04/2020 18:19

I would be wary in places like CP/Butlins. Way too many people in one place at the same time. Cottages may be ok and caravans without entertainment/pools etc.

Writerandreader · 18/04/2020 18:22

Germany has said no mass gatherings until September. Which girben they have their shit together a lot more than us leads me to assume we will be open only in a limited way over summer. There will be zero chance of foreign holidays. At the moment most EU countries have mandatory quarantine of all arrivals. Given the UK is lagging behind we will probably not be welcome in many countries. Brits will be seen as bringing risk of virus.

SE13Mummy · 18/04/2020 18:24

Second half of August, self-catering cottage on the south coast booked for a week. We're holding on to the booking for as long as possible because it's something to look forward to for as long as it isn't cancelled. We know it may not go ahead but have been in touch with the cottage owners to say if restrictions have lifted by then, we'd still like to come.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/04/2020 18:28

We've just moved our Centre Parcs booking, or rather, we've tried... we won't know for several weeks if our chosen alternative booking is accepted.

Our holiday was meant to start this coming monday and I only got the email enabling us to ask for a different week or a refund on Thursday.

Center Parcs are asking people to do nothing until they email you, but in our case we'd already paid the full balance months ago, I don't know what the situation is if you have only paid the deposit.

ladylunchalot · 18/04/2020 19:03

We've paid a deposit for a lodge in Cornwall for early July and the balance is due next month. I don't think we will be going so will try to move the deposit for a break in October.
Took me ages to find it as ds has autism and epilepsy and hates anywhere busy which is why we always tend to go to Cornwall when it's term time there (we live in Scotland) so that it's quieter. Very reluctant to go if all schools are still off, couldn't cope with the meltdowns.
