To think that a personality cult has developed around Boris Johnson?

I know this sounds completley ridiculous but have a quick look around social media and in particular Twitter, and you will see a disturbing number of people with lots of union flags in their twitter handle name who effectively think that the sun shines out of his arse, that he can do no wrong and that any justifiable criticism of his or his governments handling of the current crisis is part of a massive 'leftie' conspiracy against him.

They are terrified of 'lefties's and 'liberals' and think all of the media are out to get Boris and his government, it is just bat shit. Its not just Twitter either, I had to unfriend someone on Facebook after they told me that I should 'show Boris some fucking respect' a few weeks ago. This was after I'd shared something criticising his handling of the pandemic. Thankfully it was somone I don't really know that well and never have to see again, but still!

If im honest it all a bit disturbing. Its reminscent of a personality cult IMO, 'how dare you disrespect our glorious leader'.

But Trump did succeed in becoming Preindustrial, with the help of Putin. I'm much less worried about Trump and Johnson than I am of Putin, who is attempting to change the constitution so he can stay as President of Russia. He certainly does have the credentials to become another Hitler. I don't see that happening with Johnson; the Prime Minister can be voted out by their own party, as happened with Thatcher.

starlightgazers · 17/04/2020 19:33

Compare to say May and Brown - they didn’t. I think both of them were probably more committed to public service, but didn’t have that ability to win over the public

Yep, exactly that. Unfortunately, it would seem a majority of the population prefer to support the thinly veneered, self-serving narcissists, and try and shout down a minority who actually recognise and respect 'genuine' when they see it, unexciting and flawed as it may be.

starlightgazers · 17/04/2020 19:36

And actually - the same goes in general, not just politics. As Bob Marley said '' the problem is people are being hated when they are real, and loved when they are fake''. That sentiment was never more true than it is today.

@Graphista

I didn't mean to imply that Thatcher and Blair were opposites. I don't think they were. They both managed to get the middle ground of voters to support them. Because of the time when they came to power. With Thatcher, she got in because voters were fed up with the power of the unions after the winter of discontent. Blair got in because voters were fed up after 18 years of Tory government, especially because of the sleaze uncovered connected with Tory MPs.

They both lost their way after 10 years because they took their positions for granted. (Although Blair gave up power more readily than Thatcher did to give him his due.)

StoneofDestiny · 17/04/2020 19:41

Nearly worked himself to death

😂😂😂
How could anybody even think that about womanising, babymaker Boris? He has more time on his hands than the average worker! He has certainly never been overworked.

Oddly I think he has done his “best” just his “best” is shit!
Grin.

One part of his anatomy seems to be in good working order.

Clavinova · 17/04/2020 19:47

I wasn’t a particular fan of Corbyn, but I also didn’t/don’t agree with the blanket criticism of him. Many of his proposed policies were perfectly sensible, fully costed changes...

Grin Grin

starlightgazers · 17/04/2020 19:47

babymaker Boris?

Jesus - do you mind- I was eating ........Grin

starlightgazers · 17/04/2020 19:48

Please - no more- I'm begging!!

Clavinova · 17/04/2020 19:54

Johnson hasn’t done a fucking REAL days work HIS WHOLE LIFE!

He appears to have written quite a few books. Do you mean manual work? Lots of people sit at desks these days.

Graphista · 17/04/2020 20:01

You REALLY think he put the graft into those books HIMSELF? Do me a favour!

He comes over faint at the mere suggestion of actual graft - mental or physical!

Clavinova · 17/04/2020 20:08

You REALLY think he put the graft into those books HIMSELF? Do me a favour!

Yes, I do - he won an academic scholarship to Eton (they only give out 12/14 King's scholarships a year), he worked as a journalist, he wrote the speech Earl Spencer made at Princess Diana's funeral - why would he not write his own books?

Elsiebear90 · 17/04/2020 20:11

I agree, some of my own family members are his biggest fans, who can’t handle anything other than praise for their glorious leader. Any criticism of him in their eyes is either lies, he was “only joking” or if it wasn’t then whatever he did wrong wasn’t that bad and if it was that bad he had to do it because of labour. They think the same of Trump as well, that there’s some huge conspiracy against him with the media or the “loony left”. It’s scary.

NiteFlights · 17/04/2020 20:11

Boris Johnson appeals to thick people, basically.

Like Trump, he makes racists, liars, adulterers and bullies feel good about themselves.

Say what you like about Blair and Thatcher, but they both had terrific intelligence, skills, and values as well as charisma.

As for Jeremy Corbyn, I’m not a fan, but he’s a decent human being. Boris Johnson is incompetent and despicable.

Krisskrosskiss · 17/04/2020 20:12

Lmao have you tried to read any of his books? Google them and read some excerpts... spoiler... they arent literary classics... its write by numbers for cash... as is his 'journalism'... like many people who had that type of schooling he knows exactly how to make money and he has the confidence/arroganceas well as the contacts to do it...

koshkatt · 17/04/2020 20:15

Boris Johnson appeals to thick people, basically

Gosh. Well I see that this thread has moved on somewhat...Hmm

Graphista · 17/04/2020 20:20

"why would he not write his own books?" Because it would be too much like actual work

A work ethic and intelligence are not necessarily attributes in one person!

Also intellectuality, intelligence and common sense aren't necessarily possessed by the same person.

I have a dear friend who is extremely intelligent and a well known intellectual (in their field)...zero common sense!

koshkatt · 17/04/2020 20:24

he wrote the speech Earl Spencer made at Princess Diana's funeral

I did not know this Clavinova. Interesting.

Clavinova · 17/04/2020 20:24

Do thick people watch 'Have I Got News for You' and read the Spectator magazine? Labour controlled London twice voted for Boris Johnson as London Mayor - are you saying people living in London are thick?

CherryPavlova · 17/04/2020 20:43

I cannot fathom why anyone would listen to his misogyny, homophobia and racism and feel he was a suitable MP, let alone MP. That’s apart from his lies, croneyism and disregard for others.

His best words.....
Outrageous that married couples should pay for ‘the single mothers’ desire to procreate independently of men.

Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3.

Orientals ... have larger brains and higher IQ scores. Blacks are at the other pole.

All the young people I know – ie those under 30 – are just as avaricious as we flinty Thatcherite yuppies of the 1980s in fact, they have an almost Nigerian interest in money and gadgets of all kinds.

Time and again the 'Tottymeter' has gone off as a young woman delegate mounts the rostrum.

If gay marriage was OK – and I was uncertain on the issue – then I saw no reason in principle why a union should not be consecrated between three men, as well as two men, or indeed three men and a dog."

mummmy2017 · 17/04/2020 20:49

It's so funny reading your hate for Boris.
How he is to blame for everything in the eyes of most posters on this thread.
Did you all go into hiding at the first mention of this Virus?
No, like everyone else including the Medical Experts it was never envisioned to cause this much upset. You pretend you knew, but that is a lie, your commenting on what you now know has happened.
Every country seems to be taking a different approach as everyone is reacting to circumstances.
I have no respect for your attitude, I also suspect 90% of the population feel the same.

starlightgazers · 17/04/2020 20:57

That is not true, WHO were warning of a serious, worldwide threat back in January. They warned countries to start preparing, getting in PPE and ventilators but he was way to busy with Brexit to let it bother him for several more weeks. Then waited another week, behind the rest of Europe, to do anything.

South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong got the information on the same date, followed it and managed to contain it. Funny that...

Bollocks - speak for yourself. A lot of people, including many in the NHS were calling for action way before anything was done. Calling for extra PPE, and now they're dying in large numbers because the government did not listen and did not act.

mummmy2017 · 17/04/2020 21:04

Hospitals order their own supplies, so why knowing in your words this was going to happen have they not ordered extra?
It is not Boris who orders masks.
