To think that a personality cult has developed around Boris Johnson?

I know this sounds completley ridiculous but have a quick look around social media and in particular Twitter, and you will see a disturbing number of people with lots of union flags in their twitter handle name who effectively think that the sun shines out of his arse, that he can do no wrong and that any justifiable criticism of his or his governments handling of the current crisis is part of a massive 'leftie' conspiracy against him.

They are terrified of 'lefties's and 'liberals' and think all of the media are out to get Boris and his government, it is just bat shit. Its not just Twitter either, I had to unfriend someone on Facebook after they told me that I should 'show Boris some fucking respect' a few weeks ago. This was after I'd shared something criticising his handling of the pandemic. Thankfully it was somone I don't really know that well and never have to see again, but still!

If im honest it all a bit disturbing. Its reminscent of a personality cult IMO, 'how dare you disrespect our glorious leader'.

Oh that old Dunkirk Spirit and bashing the free press.
Funny what is considered normal these days. People who voted for sovereignty denying the right of a free press in this country and bitching about families going for a walk in the park.
Heavily photoshopped pics of our dear leader in front of multiple waving flags.
Must be the Russian donors advising the govt.

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 09:51

We won the fucking war

Dieppe.
Greece
Crete

You do know about that as well.

We could have ended the war a lot sooner if mistakes, poor judgement, over optimism and poor planning wasn't a feature - and millions of lives could have been saved.

We will beat this virus. But we could beat this virus quicker if we don't keep over promising and making mistakes.

LaurieMarlow · 22/04/2020 09:54

I swear to God, the constant harking back to the war is so pathetic. It was 75 years ago. It has no bearing on the current situation. The ‘plucky brits’ were very lucky that the Russians and the Americans waded in.

Kinda like the pathetic 1966 crowing when times were better.

The U.K. is yesterday’s power player. Wake up.

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 09:57

he ‘plucky brits’ were very lucky that the Russians and the Americans waded in

No doubt we would have lost the telegram from the Americans offering support as we would have been an independent nation Grin

CendrillonSings · 22/04/2020 09:58

Thank the Lord we didn’t have silly armchair generals and professors of hindsight leading us in WW2. The reason no one gives two shits about Narvik today is because the public and the government held their nerve and brought us to victory in the end. If you had your way, we’d have been holding public inquiries and sacking the Prime Minister during the Blitz!

Mittens030869 · 22/04/2020 09:59

Nope. Most of our large European neighbours - Germany is the exception - have much higher death rates per capita than we do: France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium too. The US is also rocketing up at the moment.

The European countries you refer to are further along the trajectory than we are and, as others have pointed out, they're not leaving out non hospital deaths from the totals.

As for the US, quite obviously a lot has gone wrong there. It doesn't say much for Boris and the Tories that the only administration that's handled it worse than them is the Trump administration. And even then, the comparison doesn't work, as the US is a much bigger country so per capita the death toll is minuscule by comparison. Thankfully for them, state governors are handling their outbreaks themselves and a lot of them have done a very good job. Trump discovered that he isn't as all powerful as he wanted to believe.

Chamberlain

CendrillonSings · 22/04/2020 10:00

The U.K. is yesterday’s power player. Wake up.

Your obvious contempt for the UK is why the left keeps getting smashed in General Elections. The public can sense it - and they don’t like it.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2020 10:00

Mistakes only become mistakes because they fail.
If they work out they are called victories.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 10:01

Who are these people harking back to the War? Were you alive in the war? Are you an old Man and cruising mumsnet?
If so why?

Yes in the war men were shot in the back of the head as a traitor if they had PTSD, what a jolly old time it was

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2020 10:03

PTSD was not known about till after the wars.
Hindsight is so magical

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 10:03

We were promised 100,000 tests by the end of April.

We are not carrying out enough tests at the moment.

I guess you don't think anyone should be asking the Government why this is not happening?

MogeatDog · 22/04/2020 10:03

Every country got things wrong. Ireland are doing quite well, as are Australia - but let's compare ourselves to the worst performing countries at the moment in our race to be the least bad.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 10:04

There is a power vacuum in govt as Boris is obviously not working, the govt has no strategy and they are trying to lie their way out of their f ups.
Any party would be embarrassed by this and luckily there are still some Tories in charge of their faculties willing to call them out instead of harping on about the bloody war.

LaurieMarlow · 22/04/2020 10:04

the public can sense it - and they don’t like it.

That’s because they’re deluded.

The voted for Boris the oaf because they think over confident, Eton educated, bully boys have some kind of cache on the world stage.

They don’t. And they’re about to find out just how little.

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 10:05

We were not testing enough people in care homes or carers.
Journalists asked questions.

Now they are taking care homes seriously.

I guess you think journalists shouldn't have asked those questions.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 10:07

We were promised 100,000 tests by the end of April.

This was after they lied and said that there already were 100,000 tests happening. Journalists questioned this and it turned into a “goal”.
Testing is being held in Centres miles away from anywhere useful such as a hospital, so now govt can say that they are not being taken up as predicted. Nurses driving hrs for tests and being told to come back later. Ffs

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 10:08

To quote my favourite 'Battle of Britain' phrase (from the film), it's like shooting fish in a barrel when it comes to discussing the incompetence and lies from this Government.

MogeatDog · 22/04/2020 10:10

We were not testing enough people in care homes or carers.
Journalists asked questions.
In fact didn't Matt Hancock publicly thank a journalist for bringing his attention to the increasingly alarming situation in care homes during the daily briefing sessions..

derxa · 22/04/2020 10:12

Germany and New Zealand seem to be all right. Singapore’s fine. Meanwhile the death rate here looks like being the highest in Europe. Everyone has to get out of lockdown and that will be the test. I don't think the government has handled things well and Boris being ill has left a power vacuum. They seem to be reactive rather than proactive.
Brexit has a lot to answer for because all the country's energies were focused on that.

CendrillonSings · 22/04/2020 10:12

That’s because they’re deluded.

A wonderful example - that’s precisely the sentiment that gets you landslided, all right Grin

LaurieMarlow · 22/04/2020 10:14

that’s precisely the sentiment that gets you landslided, all right

Unfortunately the fantasists are numerous.

Looks like they’ll have to learn the very hard way.

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 10:14

A wonderful example - that’s precisely the sentiment that gets you landslided, all right

Distraction

No answer to the tests
No answer to the care homes

I am glad we have the journalists who do hold this Government to account.

I suppose you must be glad as well - because we all need the Government to get this right so we can get our country working again.

slartibarti · 22/04/2020 10:16

That’s because they’re deluded

And they're off Grin.
The Mumsnet Remainer Labourites are back in full cry
Anyone who supports the government is deluded stupid and shouldn't be allowed to vote.
Carry on, that attitude's worked well in the past.

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 10:19

The Mumsnet Remainer Labourites are back in full cry

You mean - people who wonder why 100,000 tests were promised - and then find that even if we have the capacity to do the tests, we can't get the people to be tested.

That is classic Sir Humphrey. We can do 100,000 tests per day. That's what we said we would. Ignoring the fact that we can't get the people who need the tests to the test centres.
