I know this sounds completley ridiculous but have a quick look around social media and in particular Twitter, and you will see a disturbing number of people with lots of union flags in their twitter handle name who effectively think that the sun shines out of his arse, that he can do no wrong and that any justifiable criticism of his or his governments handling of the current crisis is part of a massive 'leftie' conspiracy against him.

They are terrified of 'lefties's and 'liberals' and think all of the media are out to get Boris and his government, it is just bat shit. Its not just Twitter either, I had to unfriend someone on Facebook after they told me that I should 'show Boris some fucking respect' a few weeks ago. This was after I'd shared something criticising his handling of the pandemic. Thankfully it was somone I don't really know that well and never have to see again, but still!

If im honest it all a bit disturbing. Its reminscent of a personality cult IMO, 'how dare you disrespect our glorious leader'.

So do people not think accountability over PPE is important then? Sheesh Confused

The U.K. death figures are absolutely appallingly compared to other countries with a similar starting point. And they don’t include nursing home deaths, so are underreported by up to 50%.

Boris’ handling of the crisis has directly impacted that. He should be hung out to dry.

CherryPavlova · 22/04/2020 08:23

Government propaganda is a powerful thing!
Add on a drive to get ‘us all it in together’ and feeling part of the ‘save the NHS’ army and every waits joyfully for the flag waving and street parties. Straplines and jingoism won the election, won Brexit and is keeping people aligned with a corrupt government that ignores advice, doesn’t follow its own guidance and is minimising the number of deaths.
It definitely needs to be politicised but we’ve a weak opposition at the moment.

slartibarti · 22/04/2020 08:24

Of course accountability over shortage of PPE is important.
But endlessly going over the same thing and arguing about who is responsible day after day doesn't help to increase the supply.

Actually it does. The govt are likely going to be pressured to belatedly join the EU PPE procurement scheme since their lies About it have been exposed. So yes uncovering outright lies and resulting pressure from the public by this govt does affect outcomes.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 08:28

Can all the people who voted Brexit please apologise for denying our NHS PPE?

slartibarti · 22/04/2020 08:49

Perhaps there won't be any pressure from the public.
As PP's link suggests, journalists may have misread the mood of the country.

MogeatDog · 22/04/2020 08:53

I was going on about the shortage of PPE three weeks ago as being a bigger risk than someone going for two walks a day in the countryside - I got called utterly ridiculous. People were too busy at taking each other - the Gov were putting all the responsibility onto the public - we stepped up - they did not!

Alsohuman · 22/04/2020 08:56

I don’t think they’re misreading it at all. Incompetence in the midst of a massive national crisis needs calling out. I’m delighted there’s no let up with tough questions.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2020 08:59

Do you honestly think every Govenment is not trying to get PPE.
How about we get out the other side of this pandemic and then you can start your blame game.
Shame on anyone who is trying to score political points right now, viruses do not have a vote.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:05

Utter Rubbish.
Our doctors are DYING because our govt prioritised Brexit isolationism over acquiring PPE through a coordinated billion pound EU procurement programme.

It is political and a senior diplomat has just admitted it.

Alsohuman · 22/04/2020 09:05

Calling out incompetence isn’t scoring political points.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:07

Meanwhile certain people on mumsnet harassing families going to the park with their kids, posting shaming photos in Facebook harassing families going for a walk, while saying “don’t criticise Boris”

Right.
Nice try

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:09

That toddler eating a packet of crisps in the park is not responsible for the rapid spread of this Virus.

Boris is.

jasjas1973 · 22/04/2020 09:12

@mummmy2017

Why? they made political decisions not join any EU procurement schemes wtf!!!
They made the decision not to order PPE in jan/feb and march, they made the political decision to lie about when they ordered PPE from Turkey or come up with the 100k tests per day to distract from the debacle that CV has become, they lied about the Nightingale hospital having 4000 beds where in fact its 500 and not enough staff!!!

I do understand the embarrassment Tory voters must be feeling at the moment but this is probably the most important political matter any of us will ever be part off.

Inc community deaths, 30,000 dead, if thats not "political" what the fuck is??????

chomalungma · 22/04/2020 09:12

Shame on anyone who is trying to score political points right now, viruses do not have a vote

We get out of this by having a Government that can deliver and is held to account for its words.

If you don't want a Government held to account during a pandemic - for the way it is supposed to deliver PPE, testing etc - then that says a lot about you.

If the Government is incompetent and doesn't deliver, then it is helping to continue the pandemic.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2020 09:21

Held to Account.
Sure afterwards , but right now, no.
If anyone in the country has ideas that will work then step forward .
Write to who every you need to, but the blame helps no one.
What it does show is that some people use hindsight, to score points.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:23

What do you think the vector is for transmission of a virus for a doctor with no PPE seeing multiple patients for weeks as compared to a child that goes for a walk once a week and eats a bag of crisps?

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:23

It also helps if your govt isnt comfortable with routinely lying.
As Boris so obviously is.

Ulver · 22/04/2020 09:26

@ mummmy2017

What gives you permission to tell people how to react to this situation?
What entitlement do you have to dictate what people think about this crisis?
I’m interested to know.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2020 09:26

Oh so we did agree.
Just nothing arrived...

To think that a personality cult has developed around Boris Johnson?
FoolsAssassin · 22/04/2020 09:26

Think the point you are missing is people are pointing out a lot of things were predictable in this situation but the Government chose not to take action . The benefit of hindsight is something entirely different.

MegUffin · 22/04/2020 09:27

This is all bullshit. A bitter labour point scoring thread on a left wing site.

MogeatDog · 22/04/2020 09:27

But if we don't hold them to account don't step up! Of course you always need someone asking questions - that's how you ensure good decisions are being taken. Everyone is learning in the phase - covering up mistakes just mean we keep making them NOW, rather than learning and moving on. In this fast moving situation we need a Gov that is open and honest and not making political Brexit decisions! And was called out a month ago - but no one seemed interested on here, too busy judging people taking 2 walks a day.

FoolsAssassin · 22/04/2020 09:27

Even my Dad who was Boris fan Number 1 has seen the light now.
